Oh, there are PLENTY of crappy videographers in this city but no one is a cinematographer! Ugh, I have seen so many wedding videos that look like it was done with a FLIP camera and BORING!!! I put an ad on Craigslist for a cinematographer and posted examples of what I was looking for. Guess who emails me? All the VIDEOGRAPHERS that I didn't like and they CLAIM they can do the same thing as CINEMATOGRAPHERS! I even asked one guy to send me some examples and what does he send me? a 2 minute video of a ceremony! WTF!?
So, where are all the cinematographers in Pittsburgh hiding? I've been in contact with a few cinematographers out of state, but I want to try to support local artists first!
@Miss Tattoo: What exactly are you looking for? I'm not sure I know the term. Do you want them to tell the story of your day ? I'm still looking to book someone to but I was leaning towards Big Day--idk they seemed to have the best look.
Stuff like this
Well really, anything from Stillmotion. They are so great...but they are WAY out of budget! One of their packages is my entire budget!
http://vimeo.com/fifteenminutes (a bee has used him and I cried watching her highlights reel and full length video)
Big Day didn't come up in my search, so I will have to check them out when I get home since I can't watch videos at work. Like I said, I want to support local artists, but if I can't find something like the above, then I will go with fifteenminutes.
@plantains: We do have several art schools here, but everyone who has replied to me has shown me videos of what looks like a camera on a tripod in the corner of the venue.
If you were talking about photogs I could give you a handful of names but I have no idea for video. I didnt even look into one based exactly on what you stated. Every memory I have of friends wedding vids is super crappy. It has turned me off to the idea completely.
Good luck in your search. What I would do is go onto modelmayhem and see if there are any on there.
Here is my CL ad:
Hi there! I am looking for a Cinematographer NOT a videographer. I want someone who is going to capture our day and tell a story. I don't want just footage of the event that I could do with my Flip camera.
Samples of the work I am looking for
http://vimeo.com/4538182
http://www.vimeo.com/15494201
http://vimeo.com/18236832
http://vimeo.com/16278043
These are just highlight reels. We would be looking for a highlight reel and a full length feature between 15-25 minutes.
NOW, before you contact me please please please consider your style. If you are just a person that shows up with a video camera and gives me the raw footage, I don't want you. I need an ARTIST!
So why wouldn't I just hire these guys? Well, StillMotion is based out of Canada and would charge me $18k to come to Pittsburgh!!! The other guys are in NY. I am considering them, BUT I want to support local artists. I am having such a hard time finding a cinematographer! It's unreal! Every other major city on the east coast has tons of them and I can't find ONE in Pittsburgh with the same style.
Art school grads, don't be afraid to reply! I've been to every Pittsburgh videographers website and I am not impressed. I want an emotional piece...not a video that looks like it was shot by Uncle Bob. SO please review the videos. If your style matches, please contact me. THANK YOU!!!
Do you know who has contacted me?! Every videographer that I didn't like saying that they COULD mimic that style. Ugh, no you can't! Not from what's posted on your websites!
Looks like I may have to hire someone from outside of Pittsburgh.
@Miss Tattoo: "I've been to every Pittsburgh videographers website and I am not impressed. I want an emotional piece...not a video that looks like it was shot by Uncle Bob."
Translation: yinzers in jean cut off shorts and Donny Iris t-shirts that have one video camera they bought at best buy during football off season to start their video wedding business need not apply.
@Miss. Meeps: lol exactly. I don't have any biters from Pittsburgh, so I'm looking out of state. So much for supporting the local economy.
@Miss. Meeps: The fact that you said "yinzers" just made my day.
I'm sorry that you're having such a hard time. Maybe try expanding a few hours outward? Maybe Philly would have someone great, or something. And if you find someone awesome, make sure to share with us, because videography/cinematography is really up there on my priority list!
I know several good cinematographers, but all are going to charge $5k+.
Try Moho Creative out of NYC; I know them from college and are excellent.
In Pittsburgh, for my own wedding, I used All Pro Video (Bob Hartnett). My video is excellent and I'd be happy to send you a clip if you want to see it, plus Bob is so nice!
@kwynn: Thanks Kwynn. I looked into All Pro last week. I've viewed all the samples from the website and it isn't what I'm looking for. I've started to look in Philly and found several. I just hope they don't charge me an arm and a leg to travel to Pittsburgh!
How about Columbus, OH companies?
@Miss Tattoo: Yeah let us know when you find someone! Im curious how far away you have to go. BTW went to a baseball game yesterday pirates vs. indians.....concert after the game....DONNY IRIS....no big deal.
@Miss Fish: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4jn1L-riak&hd=1
Contact Lifestage Films out of Wilmington, NC. They are awesome, not sure where they fall in your budget though. But what a great group of people to work with and amazing results.
@JeniRae: Oh thank you! Add Vision is closest to the style I'm looking for. Lucky Day productions in Philly is pretty close to, but they are in Philly and their package plus travel fee is way over our cinematography budget. Way over. A few thousand dollars over.
Are you looking more for an emotional appeal like this one?

Not sure if this would be close to what you're wanting, but what about Vita Designs? They have a portfolio on their website. "Katie and Dave" under recent clients has a video that seems to pan in and out, capturing lots of different elements from the wedding day. But the camera still shakes a bit at some points so wasn't sure.
Maybe this will help?
We're using Human Story out of D.C. They did Mrs. Cloud's wedding videography as well. They have some great stuff. They aren't on the cheap side, but not as expensive as Still Motion. We were able to buy their flight to Chicago using miles, so that helped.
Good luck!
@Miss Tattoo: I'm currently looking for wedding cinematographers in and around the Pittsburgh area too. I originally didn't want to hire a videographer b/c I have found that most video samples have been choppy footage, corny music, and grainy wedding video quality. I decided that I either want to pay a decent amt for a wedding cinematographer with great quality or no videographer at all. I've really liked two so far:
http://www.hifocused.com out towards State College area. They are willing to travel to Pittsburgh for a travel fee. One of their most recent videos looks like a trailor for a movie... it was gorgeous footage!
http://www.syncopatedpictures.com is part of Randi Voss Photography and local to Pittsburgh. I really loved this photographer, but she was out of my price range. She just started wedding cinematography very recently, so I contacted her yesterday to see about packages and availability and am waiting to hear back. She also has great cinematic footage of weddings on her website.
If you like either let me know and I'll keep you updated with their pricing, fees, etc.! Good luck!
Miss Tattoo, try calling Pittsburgh Filmmakers , film students from Point Park Pitt and I believe CMU go to Pittsburgh Filmmakers.
You can try calling the Pittsburgh Film Office they may be able to steer you in the right direction.
I am also going talk to my brother for you, he went to Pittsburgh Filmmakers and now he works in the business. I will ask him if he knows anyone.
@Demarca11: I talked to Randi too. They have two packages.
Package 1-A short wedding film. $1950. The film is typically 3-5 minutes length and is delivered online and on a DVD.
Package 2-A short wedding film and a longer film $3250. This package incluces the fim describe in package 1 and a longer edit of your wedding day. Usually around 10 minutes.
While Randi's videos are amazing quality, I didn't get that feeling like watching other highlight reels from other cinematographers. Like Stillmotion-I cry watching every one of their highlight reels. The one in NYC made me cry at every highlight reel. Then there are ones with amazing quality and amazing videos but they are missing emotion you know? I don't know. Maybe I am being too picky.
I sent Miss Tattoo a pm too but I figured in case any other local bees were looking for this type of video I would post for all to see:
I would second checking with Point Park. My brother just graduated two years ago with his degree in cinematography and a lot of the kids he worked with there were great. He is in California right now with Lionsgate films but I'm hoping that my brother and maybe one of his friends will be able to do ours cause you are right, there are few decent videographers or cinamatographers in Pittsburgh!
I found a guy off of CL. He's a film maker, looking to break into the wedding circuit. I showed him what I wanted, he said he could do it. He has amazing equipment, so at the very least I will have a nice quality film (it def. won't be documentary style even if it's not EXACTLY what I'm looking for). The awesome part is, he would normally command a LOT of money but since he is breaking into the wedding industry he's nice and cheap. I'm def. not paying him the $6K that Cana Films commands.
We loved ours - only have a short clip so far but it's awesome. He's closer to Baltimore/Philly so not sure what he'd charge to come out here but worth a shot if you like him. Here's a link to his wedding videos (ours is the first one!) http://www.therealmav.com/events/videogallery/wedding-videos
I'm a freelance Cinematographer, always flying around the world for gigs :) Would love for you to check out my demoreel - I might have the style you're looking for.

Cheers! <3

@kevinsarasom: You are in Canada! How much would you charge to come to Pittsburgh?
MISS TATTOO check out this vid , its a friend of a friends and shofilms is local
yeah giving you a link may help....smh
have you trolled the art institute? i mean seriously, kids these days do amazing, cutting edge stuff. i would go do wn there and meet with the department head (film making) and see if he/she could recommend a student. also, contact pittsburgh film makers. they may have people as well....annnnd with the art institute route, you may get a great deal!
Hi Miss Tattoo! Consider Cana Films - beautiful and artistic works. I left a posting on this board to see. Good luck!
the girl that made the video I just posted is a art student! I am finding email info right now and will post shorlty
OK I got this girls info if anyone wants its just PM me, I dont want to just throw out her email addy on the thread since her full name is involved.
Here is another one that contacted me today.
http://www.weddingvideopa.com/services.html
I'm starting to think no one is looking at the videos I posted. But, hey, she starts a $650 for anyone that wants a video.
@Miss. Meeps: oh wow!!! I wish I could get neck work done!
Pm'ing you!
How much do you want to spend? Jeremy Mitchell Cinema is pretty new...I'm guessing their prices are not stillmotion...I would say they are reasonable. I wanted to book, but my date wasn't available. He's based out of VA, but travel might not be that bad to PA. I know you are trying to support local artists, but this guy is great!
