Why can't the media leave women alone about their weight?

I did not catch the AMA's last night but I saw many articles this morning. Instead of focusing on the amazing vocal talent of Christina Aguilera, ALL of the articles were focusing on her "fuller figure," some websites even going as far as calling her "fat." Now, correct me if I am wrong, but I don't feel that Christina is fat AT ALL. Bigger than her size 0 self of 10 years ago? Yes. Fat? Absolutely not.

I really wish that the media would leave these women alone. It only makes women like me (I am about Christina's size now) feel awful about themselves. It just makes me sad that this is what society has come to.

I think she rocks her curves and that's why I don't pay attention to the media. Popular media and I are clearly on different pages about most things. They think headlines about Kim K are important. I don't. They think I should give a rat's arse about Ashton Kutcher. I don't. They think Christina is fast. I don't. They are dumb. I'm not. Works for me. :)

I don't think she is fat at all, but I also don't think that her wardrobe choice presents her in the best light...

@Amanda_Rae: Agreed. I also think that the color red on Kelly Clarkson was really nice..but that dress was NOT the most flattering she could have chosen.

@Amanda_Rae: I agree. I know what works for me and what doesn't and I try to dress to flatter my figure as best I can. She may have picked a bad choice in wardrobe, but that does not a fat person make...

@Amanda_Rae: I agree. I don't think she is even close to being fat but that dress is too small and is not flattering at all.

I also noticed that Kelly Clarkson was described as "curvy" and "volumptuous" while Christina was called "plus sized" "big" and "fat." Kelly is clearly bigger than Christina....I don't understand this.

I think her stylist should be fired and that dress is unfortunate and passe but I don't think she's fat.

She carries her new figure with confidence which I really admire. I'm larger than her and I would never rock a WHITE/silverish bandage dress.

I can't stand the crap some of the media is saying about Demi Lovato. The poor girl had an eating disorder and is finally at her normal size (and looks beautiful) and some people have been slamming her. So wrong.

@Amanda_Rae:  Totally agree. I don't love this picture, but it's not because she's fat (not at all!). I just don't think that wardrobe selection is very flattering (and dressing to flatter your body is something everyone has to think about, not just those of us who aren't a size 0).

I hate the media's obsession with weight, and I hate seeing them pick apart beautiful women for being "fat." I once saw an article speculating that Courteney Cox had gained weight. They put up two pictures of her, and if there was any difference at all, i couldn't see it! She was incredibly thin in both pictures! If people can pick apart a slender woman like her, then I guess I'm in big trouble...

I'm over the Jessica Simpson and Miley Cyrus being "Fat" too. Seriously? No wonder women are killing themselves to be "thin."

To answer the OP's question, I think the media doesn't leave women alone about their weight because we women don't leave women alone about their weight.

Some of the cattiest, most hurtful comments come from other women ( see weddingBee lately). We need to start with ourselves before we expect change from others.

@parasol: exactly! It is all about knowing what works for you, at any size and shape. I just hate that truly beautiful women think they need to fit a mold of a certain body type or try to dress like others in the industry to prove that they are sexy. Everyone has a look to rock, but you look 100x better if you're dressing for YOU and not because Hollywood says a certain look is desirable.

That dress looks great on Kelly Clarkson! I agree that the bandage dress wasn't the best choice for Christina Aguilera, but she definitely isn't fat!

    @julies1949:  Well said.

I hardly ever hear males being catty.  And I just want to state for the record that I think there's more women that aren't catty towards other women, but they just don't stand out as much.  The shock of a catty comment seems to cut right through while it might take a bunch of compliments and supportive statements to start to convince a woman that she is beautiful.  A lot has to do with self-esteem.  (forgive me for generalizing here)

Yes, it's ridiculous that the media is that cruel. BUT Christina's outfit is a terrible choice. If I ever wore an outfit that had my boobs hanging out and you could see my love handles/rolls... well, actually I would NEVER wear that because I would think it made me look terrible and overweight also. Do I think Christina is fat? Not at all, usually I think she looks great. Does she look bigger than she is in this outfit? Absolutely. I think it's more of a terrible fashion choice being pointed out, how did her stylist let her out in public in that dress?!

None of the ladies mentioned here are fat, and the media is absolutely horrible whe it comes to enforcing such distorted body images.

I do love to critique clothes and make up though - and Christina's eye makeup was not a good look with that hair color.

@delirium.megans:  I am also 1000% over bandage dresses.

Christina is not fat by any means but the problem is she refuses to accept that she is not a stick figure 17 yr old anymore. Curves are great when you know how to dress yourself. Girl needs a pair of spanx and a hot oil treatment like nobodys business. She needs to fire her stylist because he/she clearly hates her.

Same goes for Kelly. That red dress would look a million times better if it were hemmed right above the knee.

I don't think that either of those dresses were the best choices, but I don't think either gal is "fat".

I just read an article on this the other day in a magizine, wish I had torn it out and brought it home.  Women who are assumed to be over weight rate their lives 6:1 as happy, where as "healthy" women only had a 2:1 rating of happy.  I think that says alot about what the media is trying to shove down our throats, and they can take it and shove it up their wazoos - stupid stupid media.

DH likes women with curves.  I think there is a misconception that men desire stick thin women.  Maybe some do- but many like curves.  Just like some men like big boobs, some men like small.

It is important to remember to think of things the other way- I don't personally care if my man is big or small.  I love who he is so he looks gorgeous to me no matter.

The media just wants to give us one more thing to feel depressed about so they can profit off it.  I don't think real people are that critical, and if they are, they wouldn't be friends of mine.

It's the company you keep.  I was in high school and called "healthy".  (That was a compliment!)  Went away to college and in that crowd I was "fat".  Came back home and had to rediscover that I was in good shape.  Now, only about 5-10 lbs. heaver than I was when I graduated from undergrad (and 23 years later) they call me small. It's the company you keep.  Hang out with people who know and appreciate a woman that has a healthy weight/size.

Read this article this morning.  Thought it might apply here.

@Amanda_Rae: I also agree. I feel like a pair of spanks would have made this outfit look phenomenal cause everything else is in the right place!

But yes the ideal beauty pushed by popular media has no basis in reality. It's enough to drive a girl completely insane. The comments about Xtina are petty and just for the sake of controversy. What bothers me the most is the way they photoshop arms and legs on magazine covers.

I'm super tired of this too. I WISH I could look like Christina Aguilera or Kelly Clarkson. Their bodies are beautiful and they're not fat AT ALL. OMG. I'm so glad I stopped watching TMZ, and reading celeb gossip (read: celeb bashing) websites.

It really is starting to damage society that we are bombarded with photoshopped images every second of our lives.

    @sugarpeach:  Yes!

These sorts of catty articles get so many pageviews and sell tabloids and magazine covers because on some level a lot of people can't resist reading about it.

FWIW, I think both those ladies are smoking (though I am not a fan of Christina's hair color or style), both those dresses are over the top, and both of those women can really freaking sing.  I may not like all of the songs that they do, but damn does each of them have a fantastic voice.

I don't think either of them ladies are fat.. Christina however isn't changing her wardrobe to fit her now body style.... She's still in her other mode.. and someone should possibly tell her that that may no longer be able to wear that style.. I think they're beautiful.. clothing choice may just bit a bit poor.

I had no idea that was Christina Aguilara! Not because of her body, but her face! As to her dress, it just doesn't flatter her or fit very well. Doesn't she have stylists to look at these things?
