Because I HATE a flat skirt! Lol....to me it makes me look a lot shorter. Every dress I have tried on that has a skirt fell flat just made me feel well un-me, if that makes any sense. I always wanted one that was just plain but as soon as i put it on it really didn't do anything. Thus I ended up with a dress that had pick-ups. Here's a pic of the back of mine(the only one I have) and it's a terrible pic. I was looking at my feet.
Well, that's a great reason, lol! Your dress is definitely the opposite of "plain" and it has a lot of "wow" factor. Too bad you don't have a pic of the front of the dress because I'd love to see it! I really like the corset back and the detailing around the waist, very flattering. Does it bustle in the back?
So you think a bottom with pick ups makes you look taller? Hmmmm, I'm 5'7 without heels so I don't know if I want to look any taller. I guess I've always been concerned about all the extra material making me look larger than I really am.....eeek, we don't want that!!!!
P.S. You're going to be a gorgeous bride!
I chose mine because it looked different to me than the standard tulle ballgown. I love those, but after looking at a couple of different stores, I was searching for something a little more original. Here's mine, since I never get tired of posting it :0).
@jo.lee: You look beautiful, like a member of royalty! Your dress is definitely not just a boring, standard old ballgown. Is there a beaded element within each pick up, or does it just look that way? I'm really loving all the detail within the corset along with the sweetheart neckline.
I think the fuller skirt made me look skinnier! I love some fullness at the bottom of a wedding dress, I wasn't looking for pickups or anything but once I tried on this dress, I loved the waist on it!

@Ladyjenn: i'm not a big fan of pickups but you look amazing in your pic up dress!
it really suits you
@Ladyjenn: I agree with aribari! And btw, you didn't need any added help to make you look skinny, your figure is gorgeous in this dress!
oh how i hate pick ups! I knew I didn't want them. It may work for some brides, but I'm petite and I just hate the bulk and the style of the pickups. I also think they are trendy and will look dated sooner than other styles.
Mine has a couple of pickups, and I really didn't choose it BECAUSE of the pickups, I just chose it because it was the dress I felt looked the best on me. I definitely wasn't seeking them out.
I did not want pick-ups and then my FI says one night I really like those dresses with the "pulls" I had no idea what he was talking about and then one night we were watching say yes to the dress and this girl comes on looking like the queen of cupcakes and he says "Just like that, I love that".
I decided to at least try one on. I ended up finding one with modified pickups and bought it. Hopefully it's enough for him LOL

I was neither searching for nor avoiding pickups; I'm neutral on them (provided they don't look like the bride is waiste-deep in coolwhip). My dress has a few, not a lot.
The design elements I was looking for were: mermaid-style silhouette, sweet-heart neckline, a flower detail, and not a lot of sparkles and beading.
I was totally fascinated with pick-ups until I tried a dress with some. I looked like I was wearing a quilt. How they look so good on some people but so ridiculous on me remains a mystery.
@AudzinLuv: Initially, I wanted the mermaid dress, and I'm sure that's what everyone is expecting me to come down the isle in. However, during the process of trying on dresses, the Oleg Cassini dress that I picked from David's Brida (I think the number is CT something), it had more of a wow factor, so that's the one I chose.
you have to definetly try one on!!! i NEVER thought that i would be intrested in a dress with pickups!! but i bought a dress with pickups from davids bridal! and i am in love!!!
I love your dress! I love pick ups but never have seen one with that style. Is it considered a mermaid?
I liked the way they looked on some dresses, but when I tried one on it was so overwhelming on me. It was huge and super heavy from the extra fabric. I am petite 5'2". I could hardly move! I opted for a more simple shilloutte but with an interesting lace applique. So I guess I have a love hate relationship with pick ups. :) Sometimes they are done well sometimes they aren't!
I didn't think I wanted pick-ups at all! The only reason I tried one on is because a friend of mine told me to try one on for her just to say I did (she wasn't with me when I tried on dresses). So, what do ya know, I end up with pick-ups... I went back and forth between two different ones and ended up with this one b/c it is not as full as the other... I'm still kind of wondering what it's going to look like once it's cleaned and pressed, etc. I'm a little anxious to see.
@AudzinLuv: Sorry for the delay! Yep, there is a little applique thingy with beading on each pick up (very technical language, I know :))
I'm the same as a lot of you - I hated pickups until I found my dress that I loved that happened to have them. I actually only tried it on because I had already been in most of the other ballgowns in the store and my mom loved the dress. It turns out she was right :).
@AudzinLuv: I say try on everything, b/c what you never know what actually makes you feel like a bride, and not just like you're wearing a gorgeous dress... if that makes sense. I hated pick-ups when I started looking for a dress, and now I'm drawn to them more and more (there are lots of variations from dress to dress and designer to designer, some are more, well... poofy than others) But, I'm starting to like them b/c they feel more romantic and take the gown from "nice dress" to that big sigh moment of "gorgeous bride!"
I like a lot sleek styles but always feel more like I could be on the red carpet, and the more romantic look makes me feel like I'm walking down the aisle in that once in a lifetime dress... the one I'd never wear anywhere else but that moment.
Hi... My dress fit my venue. It is a southern wedding. :) It just fit me and my body type and I could sit and move in it and dance in it.
I am having the strap removed and made into a sweatheart cut neckline. :) Love likes my hair down :)
@mwitter80: I ADORE your dress, it is absolutely beautiful and I wish I had the figure to wear it! It looks way out of my budget though, darn it! Your FH will love it, too, I'm sure!
@abbyful: Yes, the tub of cool-whip look is never a good thing, lol! I love how subtle the layers are on the bottom of your dress, it's a beauty as well! Very elegant and sophisticated, you have great taste.
I'm about to go to bed, *big yawn*, but I will respond to you other ladies tomorrow, thanks for all the comments and suggestions!
@Ladyjenn: this is by far 1 of the best gowns with pickups that ive seen! beautiful!!
Originally I did not want a pickup. But a few days ago when the consultant insisted I try one on just to see, I knew it was the one! Slimming, beautiful, and I felt like a princess!
@clemster: I really like how your dress is kind of like a sheath style, still form fitting all down your body without poofing out too much, and it's cool how it still incorporates the pick ups. I've never seen a design like this where it doesn't flare out at the bottom.
@jjmomma: I guess I'm going to have to try some pick up dresses on since you and some other bees say it's definitely worth it, lol! I'm really not wanting a bunch of "wow" factor because I'm really shy and try to stay away from attention, but it would be nice to feel like a princess for a little while, y'know?
@Huneeey: Your dress is gorgeous, and the first thing I thought of was that I'd want to incorporate that same design into a wedding cake! Wouldn't that be beautiful if the fondant could mimic those beautiful layers and flowers in your dress?
@Tswife4ever: It was your dress that inspired me to make this thread! You DO look like a princess, and your dress is very flattering! The way the sides come in at the waist is lovely, and I think even my huge blubber-butt figure would look good in this style.
Thanks again for all your responses, bees! I guess the best thing to do is to try on a variety of dress styles because you never know what you'll end up loving, even if you seem convinced you don't like a certain design element.
I originally tried on lots of dresses with pickups and actually they were probably a lot more flattering on me (I'm full-figured) But I just kept thinking about the actual wedding day and having to wear it for hours and worry about it staying bustled the right way. In the end I went with a flat skirt that I felt comfortable in and that I still really loved.
I went dress shopping thinking that I absolutely wanted a pickup dress.. I think they're gorgeous, but I just couldn't find one that had all the elements I was looking for... I liked the pickup bottoms, but I couldn't find a dress that had what I was looking for on top, along with the pickups. I really wanted a sweetheart neckline, and some sort of embroidery on the top.. not a ton, but I definitely didn't want it to be plain. I found that the pickup dresses just weren't as flattering:
I tried on this next one, and fell in love with it.. it had the sweetheart neckline, some embroidery but not a ton, and it still wasn't a completely flat bottom. What do you think?
I tried on one dress with pickups and dude I LOVED IT!!! However, it was out of budget so I left it behind, c'est la vie. I think the dresses are gorgeous and dream worthy.
@kt23525: I think the third dress looks the best, but that was my original dress too so maybe I'm biased :)
@AudzinLuv: You're wrong about the "body" probably. I am a thick chick. Street size 14 and I'm 5'10" with 38DD. This dress works for me because it let my bust breath. So many wedding dresses don't actually have "space" for boobs. They are all corset like with boning and are one big piece. In every dress I put on I felt like I had "una-boob" like I was wearing a sports bra. On my dress the boning stops at the bust letting my beautiful ladies have there own space!

Clemster, that DB dress looks perfect on you! Love the new DB dresses! Honestly I didn't know what pick ups were when I first started shopping! Didn't know they had a name...I am a two dress bride and my first dress was an aline dress which compared to my second one with slight pickups, there is absolutely no comparison and is quite boring!

I've noticed many bees recently posting pics of their dresses with pick ups, and I'm just curious why you love this particular design element. Does it make you feel like a princess, is it flattering to your body type? I've never tried on any similar dresses because it's never been my preference, but should I? Please enlighten me!
