Ok I admit it! I’m addicted to UV gel french manicures BUT I have a reason. Economically, french is the way for me to go because a uv gel french manicure can last up to a month (if you don’t inspect to closely and see the regrowth). Manicures are time-consuming and expensive if you have to get them done every week because they chip/grow out, so I get french uv gel manicures because they never fade, yellow or chip and they always look shiny and polshed and you can’t notice as easily when you need to get them redone. ANNNNDDDD, the french goes with all of my outfits.
So that’s my reason for getting them. I’ve noticed, however, that A LOT of people (here and IRL) find them tacky. I have one friend who constantly stares at my nails with disgust but has never said anything. I don’t get it! My nails are always clean and pretty. They are not garishly long. Yes they are square but I didn’t realize that was offensive either. I don’t do the dark pinks with the bright whites, but those don’t offend me either. I like colors and when I can afford to get my nails done more frequently, I have gotten them, but like I said, I stick to french because it lasts the longest.
Anyway, stepping of my soapbox now. Lol. Are french manicures really that bad?

i like them because i love neutrals and a natural look, but i think every person just has their own preference.

Ive always been a fan of french manicures. What I’m not a fan of is really long acrylics with french which seemed to be the trend when I was in high school. but on natural nails i think its classic and clean.
My nails are hot pink right now though. So who am I to judge!

I. Love french as well! And I do colored tips too.
This is the first time in months that they’re full color actually..and hot pink at that!

I think people think they look a little passe, but if you like it and it lasts, then who cares?!

@lightmist: I’m fine with personal preferences, but there is some straight up HATE on this board for french manicures. I’ve seen them called tacky, gross, ghetto, etc. more times than I want to count. I personally don’t like the “paint every nail a different color” trend or the “glitter on the fourth finger” trend but I wouldn’t call them tacky or whatever. So I’m just curious why the strong feelings on french manicures on this board.

I love french b/c it can look very classy. I do prefer them on natural nails or if you must do fakes, then at least have them done well so they look more “natural”.
I used to ONLY do french… but now I think I’m a fan of colours 🙂 Though for work, french looks more professional…

Almost every girl I know always has a french… I guess to some people it’s just sort of boring.

I don’t mind them if they are natural looking and don’t use the acrylic tips. But I hate the acrylic nails/tips and I think those are pretty tacky. So it just depends on how you do it I guess. They remind me of high school because that is what everyone liked to do for prom/etc! I also hate almost all of the (over the top) nail art type of things too.

I’ve never heard of anyone who “hates” them or thinks they’re “tacky”, but I’m sure *someone* out there does.
My BF *loves* a good french manicure on a girl, while I think they are nice but just prefer something with a little more color 🙂

…people hate it now, because its been around long enough for THIS bastardized and horrible king of version of it to happen….

BTW, just wanted to add that I do not do extensions or fake nails. My natural nails are wrapped/coated in uv gel so that they last longer. And my nails are really weak without some kind of reinforcement.
I will admit that sometimes the french is a little boring. I love wearing really dark colors in the winter and fund bright colors in the summer. But then I have to be very diligent in keeping up the maintenance so I go back to the french. I do allow myself to wear fun colors on my toes though!

Until I read an article on yahoo recently, I never knew people hated them. I always prefer my french tips over solid color. It’s like the pair of black pumps that goes with everything.

@Nona99: eww…that made me shudder a bit

I have no idea if this makes any sense out loud but hopefully you will know what I mean…
I believe the sole purpose of makeup is to enhance natural beauty and a french manicure in an enhanced version of our natural nails. Gel and shellac manicures, IMO, are the best because they look classy and natural and timeless. On the other hand acrillics etc can look over the top and less like an ‘enhancement’ which is why people don’t like them as much.
