@arsing89:  I agree with you. I have begun to think of social media as a living diary. In my day and no Im not that old, my journal was where I put everything, nowadays its FB and Twitter and every other place they can post something.

However they are teenagers, they are living in the here and now. They arent thinking about the future. They live one day to the next. Perhaps thats what we as adults have learned. We know you have to look to the future however they are looking to the next day.

Because no adult in their life is telling them these things, or is telling them these things but does not have the authority to enforce it. I will add that this is not just confined to teenagers, stupidity runs rampant among adults as well.

sometimes you just have to tell them the things their parents aren’t. it’s even possible that the parents don’t know that this is happening because of ignorance.

I’m friends with a girl on fb who actually put that she works at the local strip club. She posts pictures all the time of her dancing. So trashy.

I have seen some pretty unbelievable things on FB and Twitter.  One teen took pictures of his girlfriend holding a gun to her head and mouth.  She was just “posing.”  As if mimicking a suicide attempt is cute or funny?  I know someone who is only a year younger than I (I’m 23, too) and she posts these pictures of her bong/bowl collection and constantly writes about getting high/buying weed.  One time, her boyfriend posted that he was in her vagina?!  Wtf?!

Another thing, I am watching Dr. Phil and this girl was kidnapped and raped for days.  She said that other kids made fun of her once she got back to school.  That is just plain disgusting.  Most teenagers are just dispicable, deplorable people.  It’s sad.

The short answer is that their brains aren’t fully developed yet, and they have limited long term thinking/consequences capacity which makes them stupider than the adult they are going to (hopefully) become. That said, I’m 23 and I’ve never done anything so stupid, the worst thing on FB for me would be a pic of me holding a red solo cup at a college party. I’m pretty sure I was drinking soda from it too, I was also already 21 at the time.

the long answer is this…

there are just major differences I think from when I was high school as opposed to today’s kids. My theory is that things are wayyyyy to accessible these days. Take the internet for example, its literally at your fingertips. When I was in high school the only way to go on the internet was to use the family computer at home or the ones you could sign up to use in the school library. Both were highly monitored so the things we were exposed to don’t even come close to what kids have access to these days. From ipods to smart phones they can basically see what they want when they want, and because parents are busy trying to one up each other kids actually have their own gadgets like this. Im not against it completely if its used in moderation because lets face it, kids need to be literate with today’s technology, however, that doesnt mean parents shouldn’t be like hawks on thier kids gadgets and accounts of any kind.

My sisters generation was wayyyyy ahead of mine. we are 8 years apart. She knew about things in like 6th grade that I had no idea about until my junior or senior year in high school. Again I credit this to the things kids are exposed to and how accessible they are. Plus, the things considered acceptable today were just not when I was a teenager. the things they sing about in songs, the things young girls wear, etc. britney spears wearing a cheesy looking school girl uniform in her first video was considered super risque. the boundaries are much further now and kids see it all.

The point of this is that to them, its normal, they don’t see it how we see it. My younger cousin will like these relationship photos on facebook that talk about sex and whatever else and she’s like 12. She has photos of her kissing her boyfriend on there with captions like “forever my love”…. ummmm when I was 12 I hadn’t really kissed a boy for real and I would have died if someone had a photo of it. They are groomed to think that stuff like that is “cool” by the media that they all have access to. This includes, drugs, like marijuana. Weed was done when I was in high school too but there is a lot more discussion about the legalization of weed today than there was then. So again, its right out there for them to see and talk about and its made out to be cool or trendy.

Sorry for the long response lol but this is something that really really bothers me and its talked about a lot amongst my circle of friends lately. So I had quite a bit to say 🙂

I think teenagers unfortunately have always been mean and have done dumb things.  I think we hear about it a lot more today because of social media and because of the way news is sensationalized.  I sound old, but when I was in high school, there were bullies, kids got beat up, kids fought (rarely with guns however) and you never heard about it on the news.  Obviously this is a time before the internet so we didn’t have instant access to everything like we do now.  Also, everything is out there forever.  When we drank, there wasn’t Facebook to post our dumb photos on – now there is, for all the world to see and it never goes away.  You didn’t have someone with a camera with them at all time.

Do teenagers now have more pressure than when I was one?  It seems like high school is harder than when I went.  So much more is expected of kids, but at the same time, we live in an instant gratification society.  When I was a teenager, everyone I knew had a part time job after school.  Now, most of my neighbors’ kids don’t work at all.  They expect everything handed to them.

I agree that most teenagers tend to live in the here and now and don’t give a second thought to those things they post.  It’s really sad.

@arsing89:  I don’t remember things like this either and I’m just 21. The weed, bong, alcohol, etc. – is just stupid.

I saw the thing about the teenage boys raping the girl. That is just disgusting and I hope they’re in prison for the rest of their lives.

It seems like a lot of weird things happened in just the last couple of years. My FI’s niece posts some insane things, but her friends post worse. And they’re 12/13.
