(Closed) Why does everyone think strippers are sleazy and out to have sex?

I have a few friends who danced at one time – they, as far as I know, never did anything scandalous. (I also have a friend who is a porn superstar, but thats another story!) I think the negative stigma comes from people who are uneducated about what REALLY goes down in a strip club, and horror stories and shame/embarassment/intimidation on their part.

Just like with anything – there are a few bad apples that ruin it for everyone. Just like all muslims arent terrorists, not all strippers are whores.

Congrats to you for breaking the sterotypical image of the dreaded “stripper”….I am glad you posted your story and thanks for sharing it…I think strippers have been demonized in the last few years in the US mostly, if you go to other countries nudity is celebrated and even on TV daytime shows like soap operas, the US is still so puritan in its views of nudity….I applaud you for your professionalism during your short career as a stripper, unfortunately you are not the norm and it’s always the bad apples that ruin it for everyone making an honest living….in any profession…

I don’t hate strippers or think they are sleazy or prostitutes.  I think most of them are like you were.  I’ve talked to women who have stripped and they seemed totally normal to me.

@mija22:  The OP, just like the majority of strippers/dancers, ARE the norm and totally decent.

I don’t think that strippers are out to have sex, are hookers/whores, etc. But I do think that it is kind of a sleazy job. I get that most people are probably just there to make money and it isn’t hurting anyone, but something about taking your clothes off for money just is distasteful to me.

I don’t think they are sleazy or wanting to have sex. I just think it’s sad that the only thing they think they can  do to make money is to take their clothes off.

@TexasSpringBride:  I neither hate strippers nor think they’re sleazy. Most of those I’ve known were students or mothers (not necessarily single) looking to work part time and make good money. One continued on to do her PhD in Sociology based on her experiences – The private, the public and the pubic : striptease and naked power in Scotland.

I totally agree with you!  I have met multiple stripper and none of them were sleazy, man-stealing whores.  Are there some strippers who are?  Sure.  But they are by far the minority.  Unfortuantely, people would rather belief the stories about a few bad apples than accept that the vast majority of stippers aren’t like that at all.

@CorgiTales:  I find it much less sleazy than working for a company with terrible values or as a defense attorney for murders and rapists … there are lots of “sleazy” jobs out there, but at least dancers are honest about what they’re doing and why.

Couple of reasons:

1. Many people have never met an actual stripper so they don’t have any real-world experience with them

2. The only exposure to strippers some people get is from TV and the movies, where the stripper is always the murderer, the murder victim, a junkie, or a sex slave stolen from another country

3. No one ever tells stories about a guy who had a bachelor party in a strip club, his friends bought him drinks, everyone behaved and came home. It’s not because those parties don’t happen. It’s because those parties are boring to gossip about.

4. Americans are very prudish when it comes to anything sex-related. Since we’re brought up to think that sex is dirty, and that boobs must always remain hidden, and that a girl who has sex before marriage is damaged goods to her husband, we automatically think that any girl who would willingly take her clothes off for money is a skanky slut

5. Strippers tend to be in pretty good shape and many women find that threatening, so we de-humanize them, so that we will be able to worry less about our menfolk ogling them

FWIW,  stripping is NOT the only thing that most of these women can do to make money. It just pays a hell of a lot better than most other jobs, especially part-time jobs. To pity a stripper because she “can’t find anything better to do to make money” is pretty silly. She CAN find other things to do. But if she’s pulling down $400/night, then she’s got to work about a third as much as the fully clothed waitress next door.  I honestly don’t see what is wrong with anyone, male or female, wanting to work fewer hours for more pay.

And for those who think the average stripper is uneducated, alcoholic, sex-starved or so forth, they are not. The OP is exactly the average stripper.  There was a strip bar here in DC which closed a few years back when the owner retired, but while it was open, about 50% of the girls were attending GW University, which is one of the toughest, most expensive schools in the country. And making good grades, getting their degrees, and going on to the next stage of their lives.

I don’t have an opinion either way – just like I don’t have an opinion about anybody else’s job. You go in, you do your job and you leave at the end of the day and get paid. What’s to judge?

I don’t think strippers are sleezy (though I would never be one, but that’s a whole different discussion).. One of FH’s and my best friends is ALWAYS going to local strip clubs (there aren’t many around here).. But he actually TALKS to the girls while getting a lap dance (odd, maybe).. Most of the girls that dance for him/his buddies are putting themselves through medical school or something like that.. or paying for tuition to Penn State o_O.. I say if you have the body and the balls to be a stripper, go for it! It’s a learning experience, and I would bet 10-1, it’s a fairly fun job!

EDT: I just realized I may have made our friend sound sleezy or icky. He’s not.. He goes maybe three or four times a month (which I suppose isn’t always), and after bowling (no alcohol in the bowling alley), so he’s not going in the middle of the day and drunk… The only other times I have ever know of him going to clubs is when he went to vegas, or for bachelor parties…
