Ill just say what my mom has always said to me, when you ask why me? You have to ask why not me? Yes it does stink and will require a lot of change for the both of you, but there are so many worse things in the world. If anything it will give you two the chance to see:: how you react under pressure, how you support each other when very stressed out and manage finances under extreame costs (money/finance disagreements is 1 on the top reasons for divorce). I know its probably is not what you wanted to hear, but there truly are many worse things that could happen, and its better to focus on the fact that you both have jobs, and 1 car. Thats more than many people have.

@Tigerlilybride:  You wil get past this. Was the other driver determined to be at fault? If so, you will get something for the loss of your car.

My real question is why didn’t your DH make you aware of this debt before now?

@Tigerlilybride:  how is the aunt when it comes to repaying? Within our family when it comes to borrowing money, which I don’t but my siblings do often… They agree to repay either at a certain amount a week, normally $50/$75/$100 or at a percentage of what they are bringing in. Would said aunt be okay with that, or postponing the repayment until you sort out this car accident? Surely she knows you ain’t going anywhere!

I would be livid my DH/FI didn’t disclose the amount of his debt(s)

insurance policy’s will usually cover the cost of a rental car if you’re in an accident. I’ve used this twice on my insurance policy.

@Tigerlilybride:  How could he not realize how much he owed his Aunt – he thought he owed 2K and he really owes almost 4K? I really can’t think of any good reason that he’d owe twice as much as he thought, which implies that either he misled you about the amount, or his aunt is misleading the two of you about it. It seems fishy to me – hopefully she’s not taking advantage of you guys! Did she add on a lot of interest, or something?

Good luck working this out!
