Well, they have high pressure jobs, are always having to work with other very nice looking people, and they are always in the public eye. Its just hard. I think celebraties have a lot of temptations around them, and I’m sure it wouldn’t be easy on any one of us. Plus, think of why normal people’s marriages end. One common reason, other than infidelity, is high stress. When your stressed, you can take it out on your SO which isn’t really good for any relationship.

I think the constant travel that most actors and recording artists have to endure makes marriage difficult.

I think when you’re constantly being told you’re amazing and wonderful you start to believe that you are, and that somehow you deserve better than to “work” at something.

Conflicting schedules, too much time apart, too much temptation and big egos would be my theory.

@lola2011: I totally agree with you! I think that it takes a certain amount of narcissism to ever pursue that kind of celebrity (in most cases), and that same narcissism must get in the way of lasting relationships.

@spaniel: I sort of agree, but am not sure how many people pursue the sort of celebrity we see nowadays so much as have it inflicted upon them.

For every reality star courting anything that even vaguely resembles a lens, there’s a talented actor just trying to grab a d*** cup of coffee in peace, I think.

@teaadntoast: Maybe, but they could go into theater, or public service, or finance, or… a number of things, and they choose to be in front of a camera on film or television where their whole livelihoods depend on getting people to look at them. I’m not saying all of them are so maladaptive, though, but I think it’s a profession that does draw a disproportionate number of the self-obsessed.

@spaniel:  True.  It is interesting to see how various superstars handle it.  On one end of the spectrum we have Jodie Foster.  On the other… Kanye.

(I just realized that I have this informal mental hierarchy of celebrities, stars and actors.  Celebrities want attention, stars want to be admired for what they do, and actors are in it for the craft.  Anyway /threadjack.)

@teaadntoast: True. I don’t think I had Jodie Foster in mind when I made that statement. 😉

I think it’s the big ego having to do with money and fame. They sometimes rushed into marriage without knowing if they share the same value. Once they realized they’re not compatible, they think to themselves, I don’t have to put up with this. Hence, the divorce

@spaniel:  Yeah, she doesn’t really apply, which is what I suppose I was getting at in my clumsy hierarchy explanation.

ANYWAY – I do think that very pretty people whose day jobs involve a lot of cooing and pampering are not necessarily going to have a particularly realistic idea of their own importance or what it means to compromise.  If just about every request you make is met with people falling all over themselves to do your bidding, it will probably come as a shock when someone else isn’t terribly interested in bending to your every whim.
