People assume it because the vast majority of people do change their name (and really like seeing their new name in print following the excitment of getting married).
While there is nothing wrong with the choice to not change your name, it will take time for people to realize and remember that you didn't.
Yeah, that would sort of annoy me too. I guess it depends on the region and your social circles/profession. But I'd say a majority of people I know actually have not/are not planning on changing their names. I'd never assume it.
People are just taking their guesses....and guessing wrong. I changed my name to my husband's name, and I get mail from people I've known for years addressed to hyphenated Maiden-Last with my maiden spelled wrong (everyone spells it wrong....). So you're not alone.

Sorry, there are no users yet.
..that everyone automatically assumes I've changed my name? I kept my maiden name for a number of reasons but mostly because I like it and MyFirst HisLast would then name me after a fruit juice. I keep getting invitations, cards and mail from friends and family addressed to MyFirst HisLast and its so annoying! Gah!
That is all. Thanks for listening (reading)!
