DiamondnLovey:  I have a picky beagle and I mix in some really high quality wet food for her. She LOVES it. I really mix it in so it hits every piece of kibble. But seriously, wouldn’t you get sick of eating the same thing every day twice a day? Lol! I don’t blame them a bit. Old Roy is cr*p, too. Try the higher quality stuff.

Because she isn’t hungry enough.

And I’m sorry but Ol’ Roy is complete utter junk. Feed her what’s best for her, and she will eat it eventually.

DiamondnLovey:   How are you feeding her?  I suggest putting the food dish down, leave it for 15 minutes, then take it up until the next meal.   If it doesn’t work, try putting the dish and food down every few hours (for fifteen minutes) in hopes she will learn to eat right away.  Might work.  Good luck!!

We have Daschund/Chihuahua mix & he goes “on strike” for a couple days every so often & our vet encourages us not to switch it up as he demands or add human food (like cheese or whatever) & let him eat when he’s hungry.  He won’t starve himself.  Our vet says that he just may not be hungry or not feeling well.  We’re on Wellness for small breeds now & he LOVES it!  We were feeding him Beneful as a puppy which also happens to be the same time he would eat on & off.  We switched brands when we transitioned him from puppy to adult food & I regret not feeding him the ‘good’ stuff all along.

My French Bulldog used to ‘go on strike’ from his food every other bag or so.. We switched him to a raw diet and he licks his lips at the sound of the baggy being opened.

He hasn’t missed a meal since the change. We were so frustrated before thinking something was wrong with him because he was so picky. Can you try a raw diet?

We’ve also noticed a ton of other positive changes to our dog since starting him on it about 2-3 years ago.

DiamondnLovey:  I have had dachshunds all my life and they are definitely picky and stubborn! If you’re only putting the food out for a short period and then withdrawing it, that’s great, continue doing that. I have always fed my dogs Nutro Natural Choice. I only have one dog at the moment and as he’s 15 and not very active, I give him the weight control formula. I mix a bit of the canned in with the dry (same brand, same formula) and give him that once a day around dinner time. In the morning, (I know this is not recommended but I spoil him since he’s an old guy and I’ve had him forever!) I give him a couple of Breath Buster cookies and a handful of Cheerios or a rice cake. I occasionally also give him snacks of raw carrots and broccoli stalks.

I have noticed that younger dachshunds are quite fussy about their food but then become quite greedy around the 5yr mark. Once your dog starts eating better, just make sure you keep tabs on his weight as they are prone to being overweight and this leads to quite a few health problems.

I agree with a pp, give him a chance to eat, and if he doesn’t then take the food away until his next meal time. Don’t change foods every time he won’t eat, because then you’re encouraging his picky behavior.

He won’t let himself starve, he’s not stupid. Once he realizes this is the food he’s getting, he’ll eat.

Just as another note I change my dogs food every 6 months or so just for variety. Wet food is only a treat and I wouldn’t personally use it to encourage eating unless you plan on buying it forever.

Story of my life. My mini bull terrier is so picky and sassy. After several different foods, we finally found Taste of the Wild and she loves it. However, she will only eat the Pacific Stream Salmon flavor.
