Sorry, I know this isn't about weddings, but I wanted to post this blog I wrote about the fact that Oprah recently told viewers on national television that because of the recession, they shouldn't feel guilty tipping waitresses just 10 percent, instead of 15-20. I was so indignant, that I wrote this letter and sent it to her studio.

    Dear Oprah,

How to begin … I grew up admiring your charity, your hard work to become what you are, your sympathy toward the less fortunate. When I dreamed of becoming a journalist someday, the dream was to work for Oprah magazine, so I too could help others, especially women.  I have even written you several letters over the years pleading for a job, even if it meant just getting coffee for the "important people.”  Every time I rose to more and more important positions, I applied yet again, thinking/hoping that my latest experience would make the difference. I never took it personally when I never heard back – I know you get lots of letters from people with bigger problems than my silly dream, and I knew it was a tall request to fulfill.

In just one day, however, my whole opinion of you changed. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing that you actually told the public (so many of whom hold you in as high of an esteem as I once did and take your advice to heart) that because of the recession it is now acceptable to tip waitresses 10 percent? I’m sorry, but, with all due respect, who the he*l are you???

I know it’s a strong reaction, but I’ll tell you why you are getting it. First, you could not be more off base in your stance on this. Do you seriously think tipping waitresses less money is a way to help people to survive the recession? Did it not cross your mind that the recession is affecting waitresses as much as it is anyone else? Did you consider that restaurants are suffering because fewer people have money to go out to eat, and waitresses have fewer customers, i.e. fewer tips at the end of the night, not to mention what they tip out the bar, food runner, hostess and bus people? Then how about the fact that we LIVE off those tips, because they are all we have left after taxes eat up our ENTIRE $2.25 an hour paychecks? And how much money do you think we normally make in tips that WE can afford a 50% pay cut?

I’ll tell you personally that New York unemployment pays more than waitressing full time, and I’m a GOOD waitress! Most people don’t even tip 20% as it is, and you are encouraging them to tip less!!? If people are so poor, they should stay home and cook like my husband and I do! Ramen, Eggs, Mac & Cheese, Hamburger help and fast food all taste great, and they’re cheap, not to mention probably healthier than half the butter-soaked red meat you get at restaurants! If someone can’t afford to tip a respectable 15-20% they should not go out, it’s part of the cost. I’m sick of seeing couples thinking nothing of ordering their top shelf Grey Goose Martinis, shrimp and lobster appetizers and filet mignon entrees and not finding money to tip 15 percent, even in instances where I have gone so far as to clean the salad dressing they spilled on themselves off their shoes with soda water.

Finally, who are YOU to decide what someone else should get paid for running their butts off in a very physically and mentally demanding job! And yes, it’s hard to remember every little extra lemon or cup of ice each table asks you for as you walk by – forget one and forget your tip! Rarely do I forget so much as an extra bread plate, and still get a 15-20 percent tip. I even had someone go so far as to stiff me entirely because their table light bulb burned out and didn’t get replaced fast enough – the light was for ambience only – I don’t control the lights!< In that case, I literally served that person for free and it happens all the time. UGH! I want to yell from the roof tops how wrong you are.

Finally, I’ll give you my personal story, further enforcing just how ridiculous it is to advise people to use the recession as an excuse to tip cheaply. I am waitressing BECAUSE I was laid off from my fancy Senior Editor job AS A RESULT OF the recession. I'm already down to less than 1/4 of my old salary because of the recession, so why don't you kick me more while I'm down? I can’t find another job in my profession because there are just too many people EXACTLY like me, but with ten more years experience competing for the same entry-level editor jobs. So what am I doing? I’m waitressing, and I’m doing it even knowing I’d make more staying home and mooching off the government on my unemployment. I let the government keep its money and LOSE money every shift I work out of nothing more than respect for myself and our country, and now thanks to you I’ll be losing SO much, I might be FORCED to go back on unemployment.

So I DARE YOU to tell me how this is HELPING us get out of the recession? No … it’s having the opposite effect, and I hope you are freakin’ proud. You claim to represent the middle class, but waitresses are LOWER middle class, and you chose to punish us – people you have made a living and a fortune claiming to empathize with and help – so that you can say what people who can actually afford to go out want to hear. I’m completely disgusted, and you should be ashamed.

    Thoughts, comments, anyone?

Oh man! I don't watch oprah, but I was a waitress/cocktail server for 7 years before and during college. I would love for Oprah to spend a week being a waitress and to see what she says then! I never tip less than 20% unless something is seriously wrong. I don't take crappy service well, but other than that, I tip very well. Most of the time, the diference between 15% and 20% is $1-$3, so why not just tip the extra. HOw much is it really effecting me to tip $1-$3 more?

That is horrible of her to say!  I have never been a waitress but I always tip at least 20% because I know what a hard job it is.  I have heard friends tell me that sometimes they have to pay their company back at the end of their payperiod because the measley amount of money their 'salary' is doesn't cover the taxes.  And it's not like the government believes you if you say that everyone is giving you tips under 15%, they automatically assume that is how much you are making!  I hope that she listens to your letter and realizes it is wrong to stiff people who are trying to make an honest living.

I can't believe she said that! I'm actually not a big O fan to begin with, but that's inexcusable. You made really good points about people ordering expensive food (or any food, really, it would be cheaper to go out or go to a self-serve place) but suddenly tightening the purse strings when it comes to tipping.

It's funny, because I always tip 20% or a little more unless the server really gives me a reason not to, and I'm a broke college student. My dad, who has quite a bit of money saved up, is a 15% for a good server kind of guy. Maybe it has to do with those who have worked the service jobs more recently feel it more?

Seriously, send the letter. I still can't believe she'd say a thing like that. Some people really need to learn to think before they open their mouths.

@lilyfaith - I think a lot of it has to do with age too... when I was younger, 15% was considered generous.  Now, 20% is the standard.  Maybe it was something similar with your dad?

Is 20% standard now?  I always thought 15% was average, 20% was for better than average, and more than that for exceptional service.  I don't want to undertip/shortchange servers but I also don't want to feel like I'm rewarding mediocre service with a better than average tip.

That said I definitely agree that tipping low just because it's a recession is ridiculous.  I don't eat out very often because I too am a poor student, but when I do I make sure to tip based on the quality of the service...not whether or not I feel like paying extra -_-  And not tipping at all because of the lightbulb, something the server can't control, is just ridiculous.

im an aussie - i think tipping sucks to begin with and tipping someone just to do their job sucks even more (ie, opening a door).... i would be happier with paying people real rates than the 3rd world rates some americans are getting

my 16yr old niece has a afterschool job at mcdonalds and shes making $8.54 per hour plus penalties and ive been told that there are some adult waitresses in the US that dont even make half that much.

edit: oh, when in the US i do tip but i was told between 10-15% so thats what i stick to unless the waitress is really good

Technically, about 15% is standard...but I always try to tip more, just because I have some friends who are waiters/waitresses and I know how much they rely on their tips!

@ eloping - What's penalties? Is that the Aussie word for taxes? Just wondering.

I don't know how 10% in the U.S. ever came to be mentioned as accepted. It's 15%-20% unless your service was less than expected.

When I was a server, (1883-1990), we got paid less than minimum wage, like $2.35 per hour and our paychecks were always zero because we got taxed on 10% of our sales.

penalties are additional wages earned depending on hours/conditions ect.

eg, if you work more than a set number of hours you may earn time and a half or double time rates plus meal allowance, clothing allowance, laundry allowances ect. if you work a public holiday its double time or even triple time depending on the union you are in. plus you have site allowances ect

but i think our taxes are higher... our tax scale; http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/content.asp?doc=/content/12333.htm

Wow, I can't believe she said that!  I'm all for sending the letter and standing up for what you believe.  She really has gotten pretty out of touch with the bajillions of dollars she rakes in every year--how can a person who lives a lifestyle like hers even begin to comprehend how the rest of us are struggling right now?  The fiance and I have actually begun taking the opposite approach to her bad suggestion: when we do go out to eat, we tip 20% or higher and call it our "waiter/waitress stimulus plan!"

Yeah, I have never been a fan of Oprah. Urgh. I cannot believe she said that. My husband worked/works as a server in a bar and seriously, the stories he comes back with. I tip 15% - 20% and more than that if the service is exceptional. Anything less is tacky. If you cannot afford to tip, you cannot afford to go out. It is as simple as that. You can always tell what kind of a person a person is by the way they treat people they don't need to treat well. Even when I arranged dinners and functions for oraganizations in college, I always tell them to tip the server above and beyond. You are representing your organization and yourself. Urgh.

Agreed, 15% should be standard. And I think waitresses/waiters have the toughest jobs out there.  I can't imagine have to be nice all day to complete strangers.  I'd much rather do what I do...sit in front of a computer every day.  BUT I have been to restaurants where there is a mandatory surcharge above the usual tip for employees' healthcare costs.  I don't really agree with appending those to receipts because the restaurant should pay for its own employees. Maybe they could just even increase the price of their dishes, but I really don't like seeing that extra fee at the bottom of a receipt.

I personally can't stand Oprah. That aside, I'm glad you spoke up about this. I'm such an activist (okay, I have to reign it in or it gets obnoxious), that I always believe we should make our voice heard! I'm proud of you!!

Edit: I always tip 20% standard, after having worked as a server and living off of $2.13 an hour plus tips. If service is sub par, then it's 10-15%. If it's horrible, I complain to a manager. But my thought is, if you can't afford to tip when you know that's part of the experience, then you can't afford to eat out. Period.

Oh man. I used to wait tables and my end of the night average was <13%. It was pretty sad. I got a lot of 5%, and not for bad service--people just feel like they shouldn't HAVE to tip. My dad will tip less than 10% (standard) because he sees it as "less money on the table, mnore moiney in my pocket". Well, when you make $2.13 an hour waiting tables, you NEED the tips. Personally I think everyone should do a service job like this at some point in their life because i think it teaches you a lot.

I tip 15% standard, but if i have zero to complain about, I tip 20%. If it's real bad service, i talk to a manager,. That's only happened twice.

I also ask for my stuff up front and everything, too...you get better service when you plan for your meal, not send her back there 10 times because you keep forgetting what you want =]

I'm not a fan of Oprah to begin with so when Iheard this it infuriated me.

Like you I got laid off and waitressed to getby. I had to get a 2nd job on top of that... even working ALL DAYS ALL SHIFTS I couldn't make the money I needed to pay the bills. But I was NOT about to sit on my rump and take unemployment. Hearing people brag about the "sweet deal" they got being on unemployment sickened me (they weren't even TRYING to find jobs) and I wanted to prove I would WORK. I only did it for a few months but I'll never tip badly again. I tip 15% for bad service. And on an order where 15-20% would only be 1 or 2 dollars, I round up a dollar or two. I can afford it... EVERYONE can if they're eating out. I agree with all of you... IF YOU CANT AFFORD TO TIP STAY HOME.

I used to get the verbal tip from cheapskates. Like, you know "Wow you were the best server I've ever had." Ok well you're clearly leaving 10%. It's even more frustrating when you know you did a great job- they just told you- but they're too cheap to give you an extra few bucks. UGH. HATE OPRAH.

That's just appalling. How out of touch can she be that she's so focussed on helping the people who can afford to eat out to save money, instead of looking out for the people who can't afford rent or food without their tips, because their employers aren't required to pay minimum wage?

Yeah, I totally disagree as well. While I am not a big Oprah fan, I do believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt. Yes, she misspoke, but her job is to fill an entire show with her opinions every day. Goodness knows I slip up enough just in the normal course of life. I still admire the work she has tried to do in places like South Africa.

For the record, if I was creating a list of places NOT to skimp/save during a recession:

    - Tipping your waitress

    - Puting money in your 401K

    - Charitable contributions (yeah, you may have to cut back, but the people with the least suffer the most in a recession, typically.)

    - Staying on top of your health (doctors visits, etc.)

I completely agree that that is totally outrageous.  That's why Rachel Ray's $40 a day used to drive me totally nuts:  she would get by on $40 by screwing the server!  She'd like, order water and give them pennies.  In my days as a server, we'd say, "if you can't fold it, hold it!"  Meaning: don't give change as a tip!  And yes, everyone who is eating out can afford 20%.  Even if you think 15% is the norm, give 20%.  They need it.

Ugh - that is terrible. We always tip 18% - 20% when going out. I did my prison sentence at Craplebees and will never go back to food serving. I'd rather be a garbage truck driver if I lost my job in this recession.

How tacky. Tipping less isn't going to help you in a recession. Even if you went out twice a week, you might save about $10 - $20 with that philosophy. Keep your A$$ home if you can't afford to pay your bills! Don't skimp the server!

@eloping, maybe things are different in Australia, but I do hope that if you are ever in the U.S. you tip your waitress 15-20 percent. THAT is the standard. Like others have mentioned, our paychecks are $0 and usually that means we OWE the government money at the end of the year just to cover taxes.

Plus its mandatory for us to tip out the bar who makes our drinks, the hostess who seats the guests, the food runner if we have one, and the bus people to clean the tables, even if we don't want ANY of those people working for us because we'd rather do it ourselves. Thats how restaurants get away with paying THOSE PEOPLE so little as well ... giving them OUR tips!

So until the government decides that waitresses should function on an annual and reasonable salary instead of the "optional" extra cash given by the patron, you are 100 percent taking advantage of the person who brought your meal by not tipping the appropriate amount. They litterally just served you, and ran their butts off for you for nothing.

@kjpugs, ugh, I hate the VERBAL tip! I got an entire speech the other day about what a wonderful waitress I was from a table of seven. They all ordered water and cheap meals and ate for $120. They left me $15 on the check because people like freakin Oprah say that's okay.

I think that's a great letter you wrote, and I encourage you to send it.  However, as I am, an eternally optomistic person, just a few notes...not just to you, OP, but the thread...

    - As far as Oprah being "out of touch" yes I totally agree! Rich people generally are.  But as far as the not knowing how to pump her own gas?  I know normal, non-rich people that are like that!  My friend Joey moved down here to FL and where he's from up North (NJ) you cannot pump your own gas!  So, he never really learned, and when he came here, over age 20, he had to figure it out!  Haha...so, just wanted to share that. =)

    - Tipping is an interesting thing.  I grew up in Japan and we don't tip there.  At all.  Of course, I have been living in the US now for a few years and I tip 20 percent at restaurants and more for other services, like salon, etc.  I figure in that rate before deciding to go somewhere, i.e. can I afford the "total experience" of this location (price+tax+gratuity)?  I think this would help if people did this.

    - Haha, I had to crack up at the comment about Rachel Ray's show..gosh, I love that girl, but that $40/day show is ridic.  Just eat less, lady, and tip better!!

    =D

great letter! and I absolutely agree with EVERYTHING you wrote!!!! I can't stand oprah anyways - she's the most self-righteous ***** I've ever seen.

And as far as the whole tipping thing - just to let you know - no matter what I ALWAYS tip 20% - unless the service was absolutely horrid, which is rare...but c'mon - i'm not going to tip if you didn't do your job and were rude. I'd say though about 98% of the time I ALWAYS tip 20% if not more.

Yes this economy sucks right now - but the fact is servers DON'T make enough AND you have to deal with the public!!!!! in my humble opinion - people who deal with the public (servers, retail, etc...) should all get raises for DEALING with the public!!!

I no longer do - thank god - I LOVE my job and am sooooooo happy I will NEVER have to deal with the public again - but yeah...i've worked in retail and i've been a server - so I totally understand where they are coming from.

The tip is actually always something I think of before we go out to eat...we normally spend about $35 bucks together and that then usually means we're spending $43 at LEAST to go out with the tip. and during the holidays I always try to tip more! ;D

My father-in-law is a cheap @$$ and so my husband, who's worked in the food industry for basically his entire life (he's a caterer now) is HUGE on tipping. :D

sorry so long - but again, I don't work in the industry - but this is a pet peeve of mine too!!!

and there ARE others out there like me - so always remember there ARE good tippers out there!! :D

    p.s. OPRAH SUCKS!!! hehe

Oh and I thought I'd add a little math here. You go out to eat and your check is $25 ... you tip 10 percert = $2.50. All night I have a total of ten tables with $25 checks, I make a grand total of $25, then take out the 20% for the bar and hostess, plus $5 for the runner and I would make around $15 that night. $15 for 6 hours of work because Oprah says 10 percent is okay. Are you serious?

IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO TIP APPROPRIATELY THEN YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO GO OUT TO EAT.  Period.  Its part of the cost of the meal, and yes it's all we get paid when you tax our measly wages...I don't honestly believe there is anyone who does NOT know that waitresses get paid a pittance sum.

When I was at a conference, a woman from spain was going off on me about how in America she hates to have to tip 20% standard.

She said they went out to eat, had $1,000 bill (for 10 people or so I guess) and she sad the $200 tip infuriated her (um, it's standard on a large table last i checked) so she had it removed and left nothing out of "principal" because "you don't tip in spain". Needles to say, I informed her how wrong that was and at least the rest of the europeans agreed with me. Plus, it was a company dinner, so it's not like SHE paid. Anyways, she argued with me about it and it really ticked me off. Everyone else was like, "if you go to America, you tip like an American". Apparently me tipping the bartender 2 pounds for my drink was ridiculous. I had no idea, so now I know! It goes both ways--LEArN the country's culture/tipping system and act accordingly. Or don't go out to eat!

I used to hate waiting on people from other countries because they don't tip in Europe or some other countries, so you know you'd get a smile, a nod, a thank you, and the table would COST you a buck or two in tip-out, even though they left you nothing. So frustrating.

Sigh. Glad to see everyone else tips appropriately. When i'm out with my parents, i over tip or sneak an extra $5 or $10 on the table. It's the principal of the matter, ya know? No bad service=good tip.

Wait, I'm really confused... In Californa, at least where I worked, waitresses still got paid minimum wage... it's the law.  Is $2.25 or $2.50 really minimum wage in Colorado?  I know cost of living is lower there but I find it hard to believe that's the minimum wage.

So my point is... the problem isn't bad tippers, the problem is restuarants not paying proper wages to their employees to begin with.

Also, I understand why low tippers are annoying, but if you don't have customers come in at all, you don't have any tip at all.

$2.13 is the minimum service wage in Missouri. Believe it

Are there different minimum wages? Like you said "service wage" so that would be minimum wage for service industry?  And why are there no laws for an even minimum wage??? so unfair

Yes there are. If you work in an industry where you get "tipped" (waiting tables, hostessing, etc) you can get paid significantly less than minimum wage. Granted, regular minimum wage is somehwere around $7 right now. A "service" minimum wage is still only $2.13. They say that you make enough in tips that you shouldn't have to get paid the base $7, which i think is crap. My "paycheck" was always zeroed out, so you never really get to see it. The tips were all you ever got. It really sucked. I was lucky--I waited tables in a tourist town so I made bank, but when I started at an Applebees and made $35 a night, I was utterly shocked at how people live on that.

Yeah that's crazy, at first I didn't agree with anything on this post.. because living in California it's way different.  The waitresses get min. wage which is $8.00 an hour now (i think), so from our perspective, tipping a "bad" waitress a large tip was ludicrous (or from my perspective - I won't speak for everyone in CA).  I did work a few jobs in the service industry so I still tip the fair amount, but not when I know they are getting paid $8.00/hr and doing a lousy job.

I AGREE!!! BOOOO OPRAH!  How dare you say something about people that work that bums off to serve other people for a living! If you don't want to tip appropriately, don't go out! Does she KNOW that we don't even make minimum wage for a paycheck????

Yeah well I think its safe to assume that OPRAH didn't serve tables. Basically she's saying... well the best way to keep yourself secure is to cut the income of servers. ridiculous. I agree that if you can't afford to tip appropriately, you really shouldn't go out to eat. bottom line.

on that note, I also refuse to leave anything less that $5. Even if the bill is $12 or $15... I still will give $5.
