I’m a super beginner at wedding planning and could use all the tips, insights, & advice I could get. My fiance and I live in California, but we want to get married in Portland. We visited once and loved it, but at the time weren’t engaged so we didn’t look at wedding venues at all. We’re going to be back in Portland this summer. Like the subject asks, will a wedding planner take me to wedding venues in the area for free?
Since we’re planning the wedding from long distance we’d work with a local planner for sure, but we’re in the preliminary stages and don’t want to lock down a contract, or however it works, with anyone just yet.
Appreciate any feedback! TIA!

We didn’t have to pay to see any venue. We made appointments and each gave us a great packet of information and gave us a full tour. Some even did second tours at no charge for my parents.

Most venues will let you visit for free. If you’re working with a planner who isn’t associated with any specific venue, they each have their own terms, but few if any will actually start lining up venue visits without a contract and at least some form of payment or arrangement to pay.

I think it should be free, but check with your planner specifically.

I feel like only “hungry” wedding planners will show you around for free. Most are going to want some kind of arrangement to show you venues.
My wedding planner, before I hired her full time, assisted me with a venue search (didn’t take me around but provided names and was going to do the negotiating) for a few hundred bucks. Then I hired her full time because I liked her and she did a great job.
Maybe if a planner is just starting out and really needs the business she will do it.
ETA: The few hundred ended up being part of the full service package, I didn’t have to pay in addition…so it was taken off of the deposit amount.
