They don't. There is a BUT there, if you talk to the manager of the department at a non busy time of the day, you can usually "con" them into doing it for you. I hate to admit this but I was able to get them to do it by crying, yup, I had to pull the "weak female" card and they felt sorry for me and did it.
I walked into Lowes with some boards and said I had just bought them, they were to long and needed them shorter. Off to get them cut.
yes they will cut the boards for you. take your receipt. they do limit the cuts and then charge a small fee but usually the guys will just be nice and dont charge. they can cut them for you on this big saw machine and there is also a handsaw you can use there yourself for smaller cuts. i was recently a vendor for six months there! i know!
They dont do it at my home depot.. or lowes :-( But I know for a fact that they used to!
Well I don't mind paying a fee as long as I know I can get it done ... it sounds like it's kind of hit or miss so I guess I will try to find a nice person to ask.
They do it at mine for free, you just go into the lumber dept and ask someone to cut it for you
They should cut it for you! just ask someone in the lumber department. My husband and I made some benches a few months ago and they cut the wood for us no problem.
We bought some wood for a shelving project and asked them to make about 10 cuts for us. The guy we talked so said they would only cut wood down so that you could fit it into your car (minimal cuts). We ended up getting him to do about three of the cuts then had to buy a saw and do the rest ourselves.
Menards does, they will just sometimes charge you a cutting fee.
Home Depot by me cuts things to size. It doesn't hurt to ask.
At my HD, they have the first 2 cuts free and then it's like $1 or something. However, I bet if it's not busy and you didn't hit them with 50 or something, or went in over a week, they'd do it for you if they weren't busy. :)
Ok another question ... does anyone know the name of the drill bit you can use to just drill holes in wood? Is it called a spade?
@moonadea: ask when you go to get wood cut about the bit. I usually take a picture of what i'm trying to do or something and ask them to help me get the right stuff. I know that when you call ahead, they will tell you they wont cut wood, but if you just go and ask when you buy it, they probably will. This happened to me with shelving...they said on the phone they dont cut it, so i planned to have a friend do it, and then when I got there they cut it...wierd.
@moonadea: yes, it is a spade bit

It sounds like practice varies amongst Home Depts. Our has a specific station where you can line up to have the boards cut to dimensions of your choice. They do 10 cuts free and apply a minilmal charge after that.
Other options we have are a tool rental place and a workshop where they charge an hourly fee for you to do the work yourselves but using their tools.

I'm going to try to construct a simple frame for my ceremony backdrop, but I don't have any saws or anything. Would Home Depot make a few simple cuts for me (like less than 10) if I bought the boards there? Anyone have experience with this?
