Bees, I’m stressing big time over what to do with our chairs. Our venue provides white folding lifetime chairs. I had planned on buying sashes and just attaching them directly to the chairs because covers are expensive.
We are having around 300 guests and I can rent taffeta crinkle sashes for $1.06 including shipping. The sashes will match the runners.
My rental company can offer me set up and delivery of white wooden chairs for $260 more than the sashes would cost me. If I do the white chairs, I won’t need sashes.
Question: Will these lifetime chairs look terrible with a sash directly on them? Should I buck up and spend the extra money for chairs??

I don’t think the first chair will look terrible with a sash on it, but I do see in the difference why you might want to spend the money on the second chairs. I’ll be honest, I love the nicer chairs, but for me, the money just isn’t worth it.

I dont think anyone is really going to notice the chairs. The sashes will be pretty and add some color tho!

I like the second chair. They are the same one’s I will have at my reception and I’m not dressing them up. They are cute as is. It’s easy to get caught up in the little details that no one will even notice.

hmmmm…for only an extra $260 i think i’d just go with the upgraded chairs and not have to worry about having someone tie 300 chair sashes.

I don’t think they would look terrible! I was just at a wedding not to long ago that used those same chairs without any added decoration. I think adding a sash would really add a nice touch.
Have you looked into purchasing sashes? Maybe that would help you save a little extra money and you could always sell them after. Linentablecloths.com has sashes from 7.49-9.49/10pc. You could save almost $100 this way. I’m only suggesting because you need so many (I’m assuming you want them for each chair not just the aisle?)

I say spend the money for the second chairs.

Agree with pb and J that the chair upgrade will be worth the extra $$ in terms of time not spent worrying about sashes.

I didn’t vote because my opinion would be to do neither. I say the chairs provided are unnoticeable and don’t need sashes. My general feeling on chair “decorations” like sashes and covers is that they don’t usually look great and end up drawing more attention to the chairs than if the chairs were just left alone.
If you do end up doing sashes I would suggest buying them from a place like linentablecloth.com (sign up for their e-mail list, they have sales) and at least you can recoup your costs after the wedding by reselling them.
Above all remember, these are chairs! No one will notice the chairs!

@pb and j: That is a good point about someone having to tie those; I hadn’t even thought about that!
@SandDollar: I did weigh the option of buying them over renting. With having so many I thought it would be a pain to have to clean them and prepare them to sell again.
If I go with the sashes I’d be buying these in champagne. I think the texture of the crinkle taffeta would compliment the pebble texture of the lifetime chair.

Chairs suck, don’t they? I wish venues would just buy nice chairs! That would have sold me on a venue if I didn’t have to pay hundreds extra for chair covers!

Actually, the first chairs would probably be more comfortable as they have a larger back.
The sashes are a pain to tie, plus if you buy them, they should all be ironed first as well. Our venue was charging us $50. to have someone tie them on for us (100 chairs), but we had to remove them at the end of the reception. Wrapped over and tied in a knot would be much simpler and neater, but will only work if the sashes are short enough. If too long, you’ll have to do bows, and they take much longer to do to look nice.
Check out WeddingLinensDirect.com for sashes….look in the clearance section as well. They are having sheer organza on sale right now for $.49 each…10 for $4.90.

@ItWasntMe: I thought that too–why are all the pretty chairs less comfortable? Our venue actually provides chiavari chairs and FI asked if we could get something else but he thinks they are uncomfortable. Silly boy, he doesn’t know how much money people pay for those things.

How big a dent in your budget is $260? In some budgets, that’s a ton of $$. In others, it’s not as big a deal.
I think the first chairs with the sashes would be very cool. 🙂
