I stick with my little black dress and just wear my wool dress coat over it.
I generally wear a longer dress when it's cold, maybe you could do a cute sweater dress? I also wear thick tights and boots, so that the only part that's really exposed is between the boots and the top of the dress.
I agree, a nice dress with cute boots and/or tights if necessary and a heavy peacoat. If it's inside, you'll be fine in just the dress...maybe a cute little bolero or shawl if you feel too naked in a strapless
Ok, again this might seem like a naive question. But I have a feeling this party is going to be on the fancier end of cocktail attire, are boots dressy enough?
If they have heels I think so. I don't think Uggs would be appropriate, but something that is a little classier.
Cocktail attire basically means just wearing a dress for girls. Make sure you have a warm coat over it!
Ohhh....I thought it meant it was kinda like new years eve attire. I guess I don't know what the difference is between formal and cocktail attire. The place it's being hosted at is a fancy private club so I figured it meant more on the sparkly dressy end.
When I think cocktail, I think of something I would wear for new years. You can really get away with wearing a dressy dress (strapless, short sleeved, whatever) and tights. Just take your coat with you, but 9 times out of 10 it will be warm enough inside for you to wear your dress comfortably.
I would also wear heels vs. boots too :)
@ bvig: I think the line between cocktail & formal really has merged. Back in the day formal usually meant long dress/ ball gown, but now short cocktail dresses are also considered formal when you dress them up. I think a lil sparkly dress would be super cute for a cocktail party :)
If you are shopping, I'm sure you could find a dress with sleeves, otherwise I just add tights and a bolero/cardi to an LBD I already own to winterize it. Since it is cocktail I would stay away from more casual dresses and materials (i.e. cotton). Also, a nice pair of heels can help to dress up a less formal dress.

Ok, I'm a clueless girl. My husband and I are going to an engagement party in a few weeks that says cocktail attire. I get what that means but is there a way to winterize outfits or are there different dresses people wear for 'cocktail attire' when it's cold out?
