hi ladies, yeah i went to the dentist today and they told me i should have the wisdom teeth removed. I told them i wanted to be knocked out but now i am thinking about the cost. I do have insurance but it is cigna dental ppo. I was told that is 400 dollars to be put under. I am really freaking out about the cost. I want it to have it done before the wedding though. Has anybody had their wisdom teeth out and so how did it cost and were you knocked out??

Ugh.  I'm sorry!  I'm afraid I can't be much help though, I still have mine.  If it's any consolation though both my sisters had theirs out and they recovered in no time!  Hope it goes well for you.

Oh hey, I wasn't UNDER for mine. They gave me valium and laughing gas. It's MUCH cheaper. I didn't even have dental insurance when mine were out. wisdom teeth update : wedding Icon Redface

I know most people get put under under for theirs, but I wasn't. I did have to be carried out of the dental office. The medication really makes you stupid and out of it. So ask your orthodontist if, for a few hundred bucks cheaper, there is another option. I promise you won't even know they're in your mouth if you're awake. I mean you're awake, but you're not really there. You're off in la la lollipop land.

Do you need all four pulled? I only had one(!) so they just used a local anasthetic and numbed me up pretty good. It hurt like a beeyotch once the meds wore off, though...

Are they impacted (that's the right word right?) When I got my wisdom teeth taken out, I was completely under and you wake up wondering if they've even done the surgery and where are you, and why does your mouth feel like a cotton ball. haha. But two of my teeth were impacted and had to be broken apart for removal. Don't know if I could have stomached the "noises" of having them removed. Does that make sense? But I'm a big sissy about teeth so if you can handle that and/or if you're completely out of it like ejs4y8 says, I wouldn't worry about not going under.

I had two impacted wisdom teeth taken out a few years ago.  I just had laughing gas and novicane.  It was about a 10 minute surgery and I don't think it would've even been worth the trouble of being put under.  I didn't feel any pain and it was over really quickly.  I would suggest just doing laughing gas and a good pain killer, the extra cost isn't worth it for such a quick procedure.

     Hope this helps!

I had two impacted wisdom teeth but they took out all four.  I was under, but I actually woke up through the middle of the surgery!  All I remember is trying to get out of the chair and the ortho saying "Whoa, not quite done yet..." and then I was asleep again.  If your's aren't impacted, I would suggest the same as everyone else -- just get a local or use the gas.  With the ones that aren't impacted, the swelling isn't as bad and it won't hurt as much afterwards.

I had all four of mine removed, but I wasn't put under - just saw novocaine and I was good to go.  I'd recommend local anaesthetic if that's an option!

I was definitely under for mine!  There's no way I could be awake for something like that.  I don't handle blood and stuff like that well.  Eek!

I had all 4 taken out all at once and one was impacted

You're so out of it even if you're not "under" that you don't even HEAR them drilling around in your mouth doing God knows what. I don't remember a THING. I was out. And teeth drilling gives me the heebie jeebies. Mom woke me up, gave me my pill, and came back to find me passed out on the bed. It hit so hard I couldn't even put clothes on. She had to DRESS ME for my dentist appointment, get me to the car (i think dad carried me), strap me in, and she and my brother dragged me in there until the nurses took over. Then they dragged me out half an hour later. I called my boyfriend at the time apparently, too, and remembered nothing.

Then slept ALL day long. And then took vicodin for the next week. Oh it helped so much. It sucks, but there is definitely much worse pain. The wrost part is when you get food stuck in the holes....ew.

So if you can't afford it, consider something like what I did. I really don't know the difference. When I had some gyno work done, they gave me *something* like that via an IV and apparently I was totally cool with whatever they were doing there. I was totally out for that one. Felt nothing. Hubby said I looked drugged up something fierce. Plus, have you ever been put under? You wake up so out of it and nauseus. Oh, man. It's bad.

They definitely have stuff strong enough to knock you out without putting you under. Save your money!!! Go buy yourself someting pretty afterwards since you can't eat basically =].

    This is my experience:

Went into the dr., went under, opened my eyes a little while later and was all done! My mom drove me and took care of me. Healing was THE WORST and I was swollen, sooo sooo swollen.

    Oh and mine were impacted

I was put under.  Mine were impacted so it was a longer surgery, but my brother just had his pulled with novacane and laughing gas, much cheaper!

I should add--mine was impacted, and they still used a local. I heard them crack my tooth to pull it out in two pieces! It was weird, but I don't shock easily. Or at least I didn't back then... now, if someone even *mentions* blood, I get queasy. ;)

I'm sure local will be enough. My best friend got hers taken out with just the numbing shots and hers didn't hurt her at all.

Really, it isn't as bad as it seems. Even mine wasn't and my jaw got fractured haha.

I paid something like $1200 (without insurance) to have all four taken out (two of which were impacted) and to be put out for it. I'm still paying for it. Ugh...

My FI just had his removed last week!  He had all 4 removed, and 2 were impacted.  He decided to pay the extra money to be put under for the surgery...couldn't stomach the thought of having to potentially watch everything going on!

I was the one waiting for him to take him home and feed him cold, soft food when he was done, and he definitely was a happy camper about being put under for it!  Although he couldn't talk well (he was speaking gibberish with his mouth full of gauze), he managed to get me to give him paper and pen, and he scribbled the sentence "being sedated is the greatest thing!" on it...coming from my FI who doesn't drink, smoke, etc, this was hysterical...I've never seen him out of it before!

Kudos to you if you are brave enough to have the procedure done without being put under...I really don't think I could do it!

Shoot, I wasn't under for mine.  And they didn't give me valium, laughing gas, or anything like that...just regular shots they give you when they are working on a cavity.  Once they started to take them out, it seriously took no more than 5 mintues.  I felt great after and if I could go back I would do the same thing!  My mom was put out and was as sick as a dog for the rest of the day, so I felt very lucky about my experience.

All four of mine were impacted and I had had previous bad dental experiences, so I was out like a light. I did not want to have to listen to any of the things they were doing.

Since mine were impacted and they had to technically do surgery to remove them, I used my medical coverage instead of my dental. It's been about 6 or 7 years but if I remember correctly, I only had to pay about 10% of the $800 bill.

i was off in la la land too with 'laughing gas'. yah... that was an experience. i woke up at home and didn't even remember how i got there. apparently, they asked me if i could walk after the procedure and i said yes and did and my dad and i went home. huh?? i did??? i guess so. lol. not much pain for me afterwards. the painkillers they prescribed me made me nauseous so i ditched those and stuck with tylenol. as far as cost... i couldn't tell you. i got mine pulled out over 10 years ago!

My oral surgeon said it would be $100 for laughing gas, $130 for a valium pill and then laughing gas. He won't put me under b/c the teeth are close to a nerve and he wants me awake enough that I can answer the question "can you still feel your cheeks?"

I had laughing gas to pull my back molars (they were in the way of the wisdom teeth), and I remember almost nothing. I'm incredibly squeamish about teeth, so I didn't believe that it would help, but oh boy did it ever. It kind of shuts down your ability to fear or panic, and you're calm and fine with whatever. Pretty out of it, too.

i don't know how much it cost since i was under my parents' insurance at the time but i know insurance was being mean and only covered to have two removed even though the doc recommended all four [they said since the dr said that there was a slight chance the top two wouldn't grow in, it was considered elective and therefore, not covered]. sigh. but i was put under for the two. i was back to eating solid foods by the third day because i was starving and tired of pudding and mashed potatoes. that's totally not recommended though. the healing process didn't take too long either.

and wouldn't you know, those top two teeth BOTH came in. seperately. so in total, i had to go in three times for those stupid things. the final two happened while i didn't have insurance so i had to wait until they had come in enough for the dentist to pull them out with the help of local anaesthetic.

    good luck!

lol, I don't know exactly what they gave me. I had an IV with a steriod to control swelling and some kind of muscle relaxer, Valium maybe, I'm not sure, and something else. They put in the steriod, which made me feel like there were ants in my pants, and then I don't remember anything else. I woke up about ten minutes after they were done, was wheeled out to the car, and slept for the next week, waking only for percocet and mashed potatoes.

I think it depends on whether or not you can handle possible seeing and hearing your teeth being pulled.  The worst part is recovering - my advice is not to wait until you feel pain to take the pain meds - take the meds as soon as you can and then take them on a schedule so you never feel the pain.  Also - follow the schedule for putting ice on.  You'll get through it with flying colors!

I have no idea about the cost, but I was def. out! I actually passed out in the chair before they even started the IV and thought they were done when I came back. There's no way I would have been able to be awake for that! (Oh, and I also passed out when my husband got his taken out and I went into the OR to see him after and saw the bloody gauze!) If you really want to be put out talk to the dentist himself and see if he can come down on the cost. My husbands dentist took a couple hundred off I believe.

I paid out of pocket and had the IV sedation, 2 difficult bony impactions and 2 partially erupted teeth.(it was about $1200 total) They also gave me a steroids, and prescriptions for antibiotics and Vicodin. Because I paid in cash on the day of the procedure, they knocked off about 6%. (Maybe your dentist can do something like that)

The Wisdom tooth Gods (fairies) must have been looking over me because I did not need Vicodin after the first day and was back to eating regular foods within a week~ no dry sockets or anything!

I would recommend having them removed now because it is more difficult as you get older!
