In early February I won a contest at work. My prize was a $25 gift card to our stores (I work for the corporate office of a popular retail chain). For some reason, the gift card wasn’t activated when it was given to me (which is complete bullshit since we activate them in-house) so I gave the card to HR to look into. This was a month and a half ago and I still have not received the replacement. I emailed HR about it 2 weeks ago and was told that they are “waiting on a replacement”. Not to get too far into it but the department that handles gift cards literally shares a cube wall with HR so there is absolutely no reason why we should be waiting for a replacement.
Now, I’m totally not one to get riled up over $25. Frankly, I could give a crap about $25 but it’s the principal of the matter. I won this gift card and now their stringing me along. My younger cousins bday is next week and we normally get him a gift card to our stores. I was planning on just giving him this and saving myself $25.
If you were me, would you approach HR about it again to try to get the gift card or just forget about it?

Could you mention it to your boss and get his/her reaction? Just a passing conversation to mention that you still haven’t received your card. If they think it’s crazy, maybe they’ll take it on and you won’t end up looking like you’re picking a fight over $25. If they don’t think it’s a big deal, I would probably drop it.

I think that you’re entitled to it and you should keep on their backs until they pay up. It’s not right. But it may just be a case of it’s an insignificant thing on their to-do list, and they may have completely forgotten about it by now.
I would send another email or confront someone face to face and just ask what’s up with it. You can even tell the truth that you wanted to give it as a birthday gift and need it fairly soon. How aggravating!

mosey on over there and see what’s up. i’d stand there until i got a gift card! lol.
you know what i mean though – turn up the sweet and be like “hey, hadn’t heard back on my gift card and wanted to see what the status is…… oh, still waiting? doesn’t Bob over there do that?…. Hey Bob, can you help me get this? I’ve been waiting for over a month and a half so wasn’t sure if the request got lost in the shuffle….” blahblahblah you get it. :]

I would approach it too. Who cares how much it is. You won it and they should get it to you.

I would say something, but make a joke out of it. Like “dude, I’ve been waiting to buy this shirt/skirt/whatever for 2 months & it’s finally gone on sale! Can’t wait to use my gift card for it!” 🙂

Honestly I would make a point to openly tease HR about it. I would write an email making light fun of them for taking so long to give you your gift card and every time you see them say in a joking way “Where’s my card??”. That way they can’t get mad or annoyed with you for following up on a $25 gift card, since you’re ‘joking’, but at the same time you aren’t backing down.

I would just forget about it.

It’s been over a month since you won – this is not ok. I would mention it to my boss and have him/her contact HR. As the face of the organization HR is responsible for demonstrating company values and I highly doubt “screw the employees” is a company value.

Its not right for a company to cheat anyone, much less an employee. Keep on them.

I agree, its the principal! I wouldn’t back down! I would also just walk over there, and like others said, basically poke fun at how long it has taken.

I emailed HR and was told that they had to send the cards out to be replaced *coughbullshitcough*. She said that she definitely won’t have them back by this weekend which is when I told her I needed it to give to my cousin. I guess I’ll just suck it up and go out and buy a card but they best believe that when I get that replacement, I’m taking it to one of our stores and they’re refunding it for cash.
