- Wedding: January 1993
A local restaurant owner got married and I worked the event. It was a total disaster, and it really boiled down to a lack of planning and communicating from the couple.
If you’re going to do a DIY wedding, it’s important to be available, detail-oriented, and communicative. Avoid leaving your family and scattered vendors to guess at what you wanted. If you can’t actually “do it yourself,” hire a wedding planner. Please hire a wedding planner.
Some of the (preventable) crazy crises from the evening:
-It rained. There was no rain plan.
-Bride and groom only had enough chairs for elders at the 45-minute ceremony. Lots of unhappy parents with babies standing in the mud.
-Ceremony site wasn’t wheelchair-accessible, so a friend had to wait in the car.
-Bride told the band “non-profit party” instead of a wedding. Band members were not told dress code and were very upset.
-The venue was not equipped for hosting a band. The breaker tripped and we lost power multiple times.
-No one arranged hotel accomodations for the band. (At this point they nearly walked out.)
-Flowers arrived in stems with no instructions from bride about arrangement preferences, and not enough vases to place them in.
-Neither bride nor groom helped set up, but did not provide instructions for decor.
-Bride didn’t order enough boutonnieres or corsages for all of the parents.
-Groom did seating arrangement on scrap paper, did not place couples together, angry mothers ensued.
-Bride wrote some names on place settings, left the rest blank. Pair that with the seating chart from the groom. Angry mothers ensued.
-Restaurant employees were used as unpaid caterers, were not told dress code or schedule.
-No one was designated to run the ipod, or set up the PA.
-No one was designated to emcee.
-Bride didn’t order enough silverware or servingware for staff.
-Bride and groom wrote down the wrong song for their first dance.
-So many angry mothers. So, so many.
Luckily, they got married. I guess that’s all that matters? It was one fire after another. Please just think of the logistics and tell people what they need to know.
