The tile in and of itself isn't so bad. I think changing out the wallpaper, adding some window treatment, and maybe updating the mirror frame would make a big impact. I'm certainly not an expert, but maybe a warm light tan for the walls would work? My first thought was burgundy for the walls, but that might make a small room even smaller.
Honestly? I love pink and retro so this bathroom I would love! But with that said I can see how it is obviously not everyone's taste. Since the tile is such a bright color I would tear down the wallpaper and paint it a very basic color (darker or lighter depending on your taste really) with no wallpaper or anything too busy. Also if you don't like the dark wood of the vanity you can always strip it and restain it a lighter color. We ended up just painting our old vanity white and now it looks crisp and fresh and was easy peasy. If you really hate it all and are handy then you can demo all the tile and put up new drywall and paint whatever color you'd like. As far as the vanity goes, I like it, we have a pedestal in the guest bathroom and there is sadly no storage space, but again I can see how it's not everyone's taste!
This tile looks like your bathroom and they painted the walls white and vanity white and I think it looks good! http://retrorenovation.com/2009/04/22/where-to-find-retro-vintage-pink-bathroom-til/
You could also look into re-glazing the tile if it's in good shape and you just really dislike the color (you would need a professional if you want the best results). See example here http://www.thetubgirls.com/Mini-Makeover.html
Or you can also tear down the tile and put up wainscoting.
I actually think it looks as if its newly updated to look old. Alot of people do that these days. but to answer your Q maybe put up new wallpaper. Maybe someting like pink sea shells! & Do the same with the curtain & pictures, ect. Unless you want to redue the whole thing.

I LOVE retro decor. I am obsessed with mid-century modern. BUT, I do confess that the burgundy is what's throwing me off. I really, really hate burgundy. If only it was black tile. *le sigh* then I could deal.
I want this bathroom, eventually.

You can buy a primer especially made for painting over tiles. We did this to our first place and the paint lasted for years till we replaced the tiles.
@julies1949: Will that work in a bathroom? I saw some tutorials on painting tile, but all of them said you can't do it anywhere where it may get wet.
Personally I'd probably work with it by using a creamy ivory color or maybe a bright white to paint the walls. I think a thick waffle weave white shower curtain would be nice too. I'd update the mirror too, either with a wood to match the vanity or silver to match the other fixtures. Same with the curtain rod. I'd remove the shutters. I do think a white/cream colored pedestal sink would be a good fix too.
A friend of mine has a bathroom with tile that is painted white. You really can't notice unless you look close. We have a 1/2 bath that really needs updating (also pink/brown tile!) and I plan to either paint it white or do wainscotting. I'd recommend tearing down the wallpaper and painting or wainscotting the tiled area. I'd also replace the mirror. Good luck!

So, we just inherited my FIL's house and we've been discussing how to redecorate it to make it ours. The house is severely dated with the kitchen and bathroom both being from the 50's. The only thing that has been replaced in the bathroom is the vanity. FIL installed this giant monstrosity of a vanity in dark wood and black countertop. It's far too large for the space, so eventually I want to look into a pedastal sink.
In the meantime, we have a lovely color scheme. Pink and burgundy tile with butterfly wallpaper. Woo. No, FIL did not decorate it. He got the house this way and never changed it. (The kitchen is pink too.... woot) I've been trying to brainstorm how to make the tile work for the time being.
We already changed out the science project of a shower curtain for the cheapest, plainest curtain we could find. (The shower curtain had MOLD growing on the inside. YUCK) Any idea on how to make this work?
