I had a little bit of the same problem.  I also didn’t spend a lot of time looking by myself beforehand, which I really should have.  As a result, I made 2 hasty decisions regarding my dress.  If you find yourself getting upset or overly emotional, just let it go and don’t buy anything.  You have lots of time before your wedding and there will be new styles, etc. before you are down to the wire on making your decision.  It is tough not to compromise when someone else is paying, so I would recommend being prepared to pay for the whole thing if you really can’t agree.

definitely hash out the budget before going dress shopping, otherwise you’re gonna drive yourself crazy. but don’t worry so much about mom having a different taste than you–i totally feared the same thing was going to happen for me but as it turns out, that wasn’t the case.

Don’t let them talk them into anything you don’t love! You’ll regret it, I did it (for a sample that was super cheap – $150 so it’s not much of a loss for me) but I’m afraid to tell my mom that I hate it now, but I can’t even stand to stare at the dress.

I knew I’d have the same problem, so I did some “pre-shopping” at a few stores, and had them make notes in their system about which ones I liked best. When my mom came down, I showed her the dress I liked, but she clearly was not a fan. Then when we went back to the store, I told the saleslady that she had to help convince my mom to like the dress that I did. It was actually easy – she put the veil on me while wearing the dress that I liked, and took it offf in the dressing room before I came out wearing one that she picked. When I tried on my mom’s jewelry that she wanted me to wear, she got the other salespeople to agree that the jewelry looks better on the dress that I liked. If you do some pre-shopping and get the consultants on your side, it will go much more smoothly. My mom ended up liking the dress better after seeing me in it, and hearing everyone else in the store rave about it.

If you end up fighting, crying, and getting stressed out, please don’t think you’re abnormal, because that’s what my dress shopping experience with my mom was like. I like sleek, elegant, more modern looks, and she is into the total “princess” image– glitter and tulle and big poufy bottoms and such. However, after a weekend of driving each other insane, we managed to find a dress that satisfied both our tastes. I didn’t know that when we bought it–then I was crying in the dressing room, worried I was caving because I was just so exhausted from trying to please her!–but once I had my first fitting, I realized that the dress was perfect. I would go into it with an open mind, trying on a few of your mom’s picks as well as your own, and again, don’t stress if there are a few headaches along the way– you’re not alone!

The second one is great! Mikaella dresses are so lovely on. I’m glad your trip went well!

love both of these! My style is exactly the same: mermaid with sweetheart neckline. My mom wanted the poufy dresses too, but once she saw that I LOVED it and looked like a bombshell in it, she finally came around. She got remarried 2 years ago and had the budget to do the full princess wedding, so I just kept telling her she already had her princess experience, and this is mine.

Good luck with your mom. I hope she’s supportive and loves what you pick out!
