I feel that my usual eating pattern has gone completely out of whack since getting pregnant. My nausea/upset stomach has been constant for the past couple of weeks, and I’ve been coping with it by eating little bits of food all day long. I’m not really eating proper meals any more, and while most of what I have been nibbling on is healthy enough (fruit, crackers, lean meat, veg, dairy) I’m a little concerned that I’m going to gain more than necessary as I constantly try to settle my upset stomach by nibbling (and am therefore eating even when I’m not really hungry).
We’re going to our first doctor’s appointment tomorrow, so hopefully she will give some good advice then, but in the meantime, I’m wondering how others are coping with this. How are you managing food intake and nausea during pregnancy? What tips do you have for gaining a healthy/appropriate amount of weight during pregnancy?

Miss Mochaccino: First, if eating small portions is the only way you can keep food down, then that is what you need to do. Smaller portions are actually what your doctor will recommend since it will reduce your risk of heart burn AND truly it will help keep your weight in check. I would eat several small meals a day. Mine, I can honestly say though, weren’t all healthy. But honestly, if you are unwell, you need to eat what makes your tummy comfortable. Once you start feeling better you can incorporate slightly larger portions and better-for-you food.
I think you are doing it right. Exercise as much as you can without over doing it, and keep eating several small meals a day. Good luck and congrats!

Miss Mochaccino: If i don’t eat every 2 hours, I get nauseus. At least you are eating healthy snacks. For the first few months, I was living off of saltines, goldfish, potatos and cheese haha. It has gotten a little better in my second trimester, so that’s good.
Good luck and congrats! 🙂

I would just continue to exercise and try your best. But there’s not that much you can do 🙁
You really can only eat what makes your tummy feel good. All I wanted was carbs and fat!!
The nausea will (probably) go away but it will also probably be replaced by a ravenous appetite. In my experience, there isn’t much control over your cravings or what makes you sick and the amount of hunger is unreal.
The only thing that helped me was continuing to workout, I didn’t go overboard on eating and I still gained 40-43lbs so I feel that some of it is outside of your control.

I did the same thing during my first trimester and actually didn’t gain a pound. I think your body can use the more frequent but small amounts of calories more efficiently than big meals and people always recommend eating small/frequent meals when losing weight. Even into my second trimester I’m eating small amounts more often as I just don’t seem to have the room in there for big meals.
All in all just keep an eye on the scale, but you should be fine, don’t stress!

I think you’re doing just fine. Continue to try your best to eat healthy, but when you get that “I need to eat right now” feeling, there’s really nothing else you can do! I’m at 9 weeks, and my nausea is starting to go down, so I don’t feel like I’m going to puke if I don’t eat every two hours, but I’m still getting hungry that often. I’m just trying to stick to healthy stuff when possible, and not eat big meals at meal-time since I’m eating all day long. I think I’ve only gained about a pound so far, though – so don’t worry too much about weight gain! Do your best to maintain healthy habits, don’t gorge yourself, and honestly I think you’ll be fine.

Miss Mochaccino: I feel like in the first trimester I was eating SO much all the time and not always the healthiest! I always wanted chips and ice cream. To be honest it has completely changed in the second trimester and I don’t eat nearly as much or often, now I just listen to my body. If I’m hungry I will eat and if I’m not I won’t.. I also don’t crave the junk anymore. I’m now 24w5d and I’ve gained about 13lbs total. I think if you are worried about excessive eating, it’s good in a way, it means you are concious about it, just try and listen to your body and do what feels right. In the end it will all balance out I promise
