@mokara723:My bouquet had gorgeous orchids in it, and my hair and my MOH's hair. They lasted fine but it wasn't that hot.
ALSO, we did not even bring the bouquets to the reception. Huh.
:( florist just told me that the phalaenopsis "never made it past customs" and we have to substitute with cymbidium orchids for my bridal bouquet with three days to go. So much for my favorite flower and the only thing that I have been picky about with the decor!
Im in Florida and I grow orchids and the temps here are over 90 degree for the whole summer... they are tropical plants... as long as they are not in direct sunlight they will be fine.
Also, I would bring a spray bottle with water and just lightly mist them about 20 minutes before and then after your pics so they look the freshest.
They will be fine.
@mokara723: Ohhhh...bummer that you won't be getting the exact flowers you were dreaming of having. However, cymidium's are absolutely gorgeous too! (I would ask for some sort of discount, since there may be a price difference and with such late notice).
Call me a skeptic but... sounds a little fishy. First she tries to convince you not to use them and then now all the sudden they didnt make it through customs?
Are you sure its not because she just forgot to order them and/or ordered the wrong ones? hmmmm.
I agree with the other bee... I would ask for a discount!
The good news is that I think cymbidium orchids are prettier & hardier than phalaenopsis anyway so I know your bouquet is going to be gorgeous!
@mokara723:That sucks bad! I agree-- ask for a discount.
And what krystal.keel said is right, your new orchids are hardier (that's the kind I had, too).
hi ladies, thanks very much for your advise. my wedding party is also advising me to ask for a discount. it did seem really shady that this didn't work out at the last minute. i don't understand this "not passing customs" issue as she informed me 3 days before my wedding.
i am pretty sure that phalaenopsis orchids are more expensive than cymbidiums but she told me that "fortunately we were able to get it from our supplier at the same cost". i am really trying not to get upset about this but just am getting a dishonest sort of vibe :(
Do you have a contract with her? Breach of contract is a serious deal--tell her you're considering a small claims court filing, unless she can provide you with evidence both that she ordered the flowers at the price she claims and that they were not permitted by customs. There should be proof of both of those things. If she can't provide it, a) file a Better Business Bureau complaint and b) think about small claims court. One of my friends won a judgment against a crazy landlady, and it made the rest of her time at that apartment WAY less insane.
thank you ladies for your responses. so my florist forwarded me an email conversation with her supplier as evidence that it did not pass customs and that she was being honest. i was able to see a photo of the alternative bouquet that her team created and i hated it - it was absolutely nothing like my inspiration photo and much, much larger in size when i specifically requested a posy. i actually called a high-end florist on the morning of my weddng and they were able to create the phalenopsis bouquet of my dreams (and matching boutonierre) in 4 hours AND deliver it to me. AND the bouquet looked gorgeous the entire day despite 100degree weather!! not to mention the reception centerpieces included some wrong colors and was not exactly as we discussed.
my original florist only reimbursed me by $50 (25% of the bouquet cost) because she said per her contract she tried to stick with the theme/color as closely as possible...i just don't have the energy to argue anymore, but if any of you ladies are working with orchids n'blooms in massachusetts, just beware of these potential problems...

My florist just emailed me and told me that she is worried about my phalaenopsis bouquet and my fiance's boutonierre lasting in 94degree heat THIS Saturday. Eek. We are having an indoor ceremony and reception but had planned about 2-3 hours of outdoor time for photos.
I had thought that orchids were used to tropical climate??? I was hoping to reuse the bouquets for the guest table decor (my bridesmaids have dendrobium bouquets).
Need to hear your phalaenopsis "survivial" stories for last-minute reassurance!! :-/
