ExpectingBee:  Fetus heads are huge. If the tech didn’t mention it it’s probably fine. You can ask your OB if it will help you feel better.

ETA: Wow, that’s the best 12 wk ultrasound I’ve ever seen! I usually can’t make anything out in them, but that one looks like he/she is posing! I think the head looks perfectly normal. But seriously, your OB won’t laugh if you ask about it.

Yes all fetus heads are significantly larger than their bodies. No need to worry since they didn’t say anything. Looks like the 5490683 other ultrasound pictures blowing up my facebook feed! lol

Honey, if the ultrasound technician, who actually saw the baby from numerous angles and also looks at these things all. day. long. says that everything looks good, then it’s fine. Why would you bother with the opinion of someone with no expertise who’s looking at a printout?

Nothing to be concerned about until doc says something. They do all sorts of measurements to monitor growth. And yes, heads look huge!

That is perfectly normal! Brains need a lot of time to grow, they are complicated. Also the bones of the skull form in a different way than the rest of the skeleton, so that the brain has both the best protection possible as well as enough of a ‘case’ to protect it during the birth process. The long bones like your arms and legs actually start out in about three parts each so they can grow at both ends of each section then knit together (when baby is a year or two old or even older depending on the bone), while the skull has to start protecting right from day one.  That is actually also the reason why babies need to have their head supported, that skull and brain is so big and heavy!

Your baby’s head looks just the right size for his age. Don’t worry! He’ll turn out great!

I’m 38 wks pregnant now, and while I’m no doctor, your pic looks totally normal to me. If it makes you feel any better, you could google other 12 week ultrasound pics and compare. You’ll see that yours looks exactly like everyone else’s. Just remember, throughout their development, everything isn’t perfectly proportioned just yet. Takes a while to get to that point. Congrats on your pregnancy! 🙂

ExpectingBee:  I think it’s not really that the head is huge, it’s that the body is small. I think that the body continues to grow in relation to the head all through childhood.

ExpectingBee:  That looks totally normal…. its not until later the babies body starts catching up to be proportional 😉 The heads are huge in the beginning.

Just so you know… It’s impossible to determine sex at 12 weeks. Girls have protuberances too at this stage because sex organs have not been differentiated yet. If it’s a boy, it will turn into a penis. If it’s a girl, it will turn into a clitoris.
