I am 7 weeks pregnant and my morning sickness (well, all day and all night sickness) is in high gear. I have lost about 5 pounds in the last 10 days. I can hardly eat anything, even putting a bite in my mouth is a struggle and I have constant nausea. Anyone else drop weight in the beggining? Should I be worried? My doctor said he doesnt want me losing weight… ugh…
Side note, I am so greatful for these board and all of you supportive women. We arent telling anyone yet (outside of parents and my boss figured it out), so I dont have many places to turn for advice 🙂

It is very common and totally normal to lose weight if you’re having bad morning sickness. As long as you do your best to eat what you can and get lots of fluids, that’s what matters. If you are throwing up too much, talk to your doctor about something to help. (Note B6 can help immensely)
I’m a plus-size girl and I lost 16.5 pounds in the first trimester. Baby is still growing and is very healthy. Weight loss isn’t always a bad sign.

What have you tried so far to relieve the nausea? Have you talked to your doctor about it? In the mwantime make sure you are getting plenty of fluids and taking your prenatal vitamins. if you can keep liquids down, try V8 juice and Ensure or aonething of the sort so you get the nutrienta you and the baby need. Hope you feel better soon!

I lost 15lbs my first trimester, but ended up being just fine in the end. If you are worried call your doctor, I know they have anti nausea medicins you can take while pregnant.

Thank you both! I have talked to my doctor and am trying ginger, seabands, B6, crackers, etc. He said I could take Unisom but I am trying to avoid medications, although I might cave soon. Good idea, I will pick up some V8 and Ensure.

@Pinkypez: It’s pretty common to lose weight in 1st trimester and you shouldn’t worry too much about it, but try and eat what you can and when you can. Try saltines first thing in the morning before you get out of bed and in between any meals you can get down. They were pretty much the only thing I could eat for a while. If all you can eat is french fries, go for it. Just do what you can. You’ll have plenty of time to make up for it later when you start feeling better.
Also, have you thought about getting a Rx for Zofran? Ask your doc about it.

I lost 7 lbs my first trimester. Just be sure to communicate with your dr but I’m sure you and baby are both ok. It’s pretty common to lose some weight, especially if you have bad ms.

I lost weight my first trimester, and my doctor wasn’t even concerned. I think it is pretty common. Don’t stress out by it, and just do want you need to do to make yourself feel better.

I definitely lost about 5 lbs total that first trimester. I’m 17 w and only up 2 lbs form my original pre-pregnancy weight.
I had horrible ms and the only thing that seemed to take the edge off was the Unisom/B6 combo but I only did half a pill and it took me 3 full weeks of laying sick, worthless, and useless at home before I accepted the fact that I needed it. I still take half a unisom on occasions since I’m still getting nauseous.
Hang in there, you’ll gain that baby weight in the second trimester!

I lost 6 lbs and didn’t start gaining anything back until about 18 weeks. Don’t sweat it! My OB office said that it is okay to go down as long as you start going back up. Since then, I’m back at prepreg weight at 21 weeks and OB is okay with that too!
ETA: Try the Unisom/B6 combo. That is seriously the only thing that helped! I hope you feel better soon!!

I also lost weight in the first trimester due to vomiting. I took Zofran and it was a total lifechanger. I, too, didn’t want to take medication, but it was better for the baby for me to be able to eat (and exist) than suffer and not give her nutrition. Taking unisom with B6 didn’t work for me… even half a unisom was too strong, and it made me feel worse.

Don’t worry! Lots of women lose weight, uless you are super thin already, I wouldn’t worry about it too much, your body knows what to do to make sure that baby gets what it needs.
If you are running low on extra reserves on your frame, then I would certainly seriously consider taking some phenergen if the usual remedies dont’ work for you soon.

I’ve lost 10lbs and I’m 9w 4d. Even with Zofran and Diclegis, I’m too sick to hold most food down. Stay hydrated and focus on the higher nutrient items that you can stomach. Good luck!

I lost 5 pounds from baseline at 5 weeks until 9 weeks. I’m personally not worried though. My appetite is back and I am sure I will make up for it these coming months. I will probably have to hold myself back, lol.
