This thread is hilarious!  Now that it is possible to personalize everything I think lots of couples go overboard with putting their names and wedding dates on things.  I would rather have a keepsake that I knew was from the wedding, but didn't have names/dates/pictures plastered all over it.  I wonder how much of that stuff ends up at Goodwill or in the dumpster.  (However, I do love receiving STDs., invites, and thank-you notes with a picture of the couple!)  But the best wedding favors are always the edible ones, like frosted sugar cookies, candies or something unique and regional.

i love that you included the picture of the bird! lmao! that's hilarious! The worst favor I recieved was monogramed coasters.  Monogramed with the bride and grooms initials!!  I am tired of these useless party favors. Save your money and give edible favors instead!

    I love this thread!

I don't mind a personalized matchbook, though I'm not sure why people choose to give them out. I'm with everyone who loves edible favors ... and I'm definitely guilty of seeking out the extras. Worst favors you've ever received? : wedding Icon Wink

Instead of favors, we're providing glassine bags for those who want to take home cookies from the cookie bar. Or, ya know, you can eat them during the wedding. Whatev.

I'm terrified that I'm going to give out a favor now that's on this list, LOL! I better read through it carefully.

Before my fiance and I decided to elope I bought TONS of bubbles. Now we're eloping in Vegas and having a reception the following weekend back home. I don't know what to do with all the bubbles now since it's not like we're leaving our reception in a getaway car to go off to our honeymoon (since we will have already vacationed in Vegas the week before). Would it be weird to still put them in the favor bags? The kids would still enjoy them I guess! What else am I going to do with 120 mini bottles of bubbles?

In my opinion, the hershey's kisses have run their course. I am so over them, I never take them with me when given as favors (that's bad, I know!).

I went to a wedding once where they gave out these foul Cinderella carriage shaped soaps. They smelled like a flower's ass and looked like they'd give you a heinous rash.  Worst of all they were put inside plastic "glass" slippers.

Needless to say they were left behind.

HAHA! Man, now i wonder if my teaspoons were a bad idea. I think they were love/hate. Some people loved 'em, and only 2 sets were left behind (by people who didn't stay) so i guess they weren't that bad!

If you're going to do edible favors, at least go with good QUALITY. I'm tired of hershey kishes, jordan almonds (i like 'em well enough, but they get stale fast), and other drugstore candies. Bring on some quality yummies! Even jelly bellies I love.

We're leaning towards the personalized dove candies.  I think those will make guests happy.

I think this thread is bringing out a little snarkiness. Every wedding favor imaginable must be listed here as the "worst ever."  It has to be edible, but it can't be jordan almonds, or a candy bar. etc. etc. I think a favor is a gift! If you don't care for it, you should still be polite.

    This thread is hilarious!

My favourite was the single tea bag per couple! LOL

So this thread had proven to me that I should not even bother wasting the money - apparently you do not need a favor and it is the wedding industry making us spend the extra money!

Thank you for a good laugh and saving me the money I would have spent on a crappy favor that would have ended up on this thread!

sunsail, i think you are doing the shot glass because of the toast, right? then, i don't think it's tacky. you are providing a use for it...even if it's for that night only. it's not like some random item you are putting on display. also, edible favors are usually a favorite. who doesn't like jelly beans? ok, maybe some people don't. the same way not everyone will like chocolate or almonds. you can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time.Wink

Hmm. I decided against Jordan Almonds, though I've been trying like a mad-woman to find authentic French dragées; wish the FMiL would have told me about them and the 5-dragée custom sooner.

We're doing 2 d20s (one in each of our wedding colours) and 2 d6s (each with a cat in place of the 1). Most of our friends and family are gamers of one type or another, so hopefully everyone will appreciate it. Though now I'm expecting "crazy dice" to show up on this list in a month. XD

Haha - Ok, I was going to do Hershey's hugs and kisses - not in the spoon thing but in a box with a pom on top that would double as the place card with their names on it.

So, help me out ladies - instead of Hershey's hugs and kisses, what would you consider a "good" quality candy that you would gobble up before even leaving the reception?

Unfortunately I already bought the boxes or else I'd go bigger and put mexican wedding cookies in them instead.

It's been so long since I've been involved in a wedding. I'm pretty much Mom #2 for the groom (his mom and I have been best friends all our lives) and since the kids live in a economically depleted area, we're doing the wedding here in So. FL. Both bride and groom grew up here. So I'm trying to think of favors and reading through this blog I'm about to wet my pants from laughing so hard. So cookies are good? I'm a great baker (really) and that would be so easy to do. And I'd thought about the little hershey's bars personalized since I can do those myself. Or even give the mom of the bride that chore to do after printing.

My favorite has to be the tea bag tho, shared!

unless your wedding is being held during school hours at an elementary I do not understand the candy buffet. I always thought the word translation of "candy buffet" for adults was "open bar"

I didn't read through all the posts so sorry if I'm repeating someone.  What this thread shows me is that favors are a waste of time and money.  I'm not doing them.  My girlfriend didn't do them and no one even noticed!  But the best ones are the food ones!

My worst favors were, a coaster with a picture of them, silver bell, votive candle (not a candle holder but just the candle).

@MissHotSauce - I know someone said that Hershey's Hugs and Kisses weren't "quality" candy, but I think that's silly.  I would love to receive that!  I, um, actually buy bags of them and hide them around my house, for "rainy days"...  :)

Favors are gifts to guests, and as such, I don't think there are any "bad favors."  Everyone likes different things, so it can be hard to choose something that everyone will love, but really, all of these "worst of"'s are thoughtful.  Well, maybe not the religious tract with the hero going to the Devil...  that one made me snarf my coffee!  So much for taking the high road!  :)

at justacameragirl: why did you think candy buffet translated to open bar? do you typically have different names for open bars? i've been to weddings all cross the united states, canada, europe, asia and south america and most people just referred to open bars as open bars (albeit, in their respective languages).

weddingbee has a great wiki tab, if you are ever confused about something and need more info. here is the page for candy buffet:

    http://wiki.weddingbee.com/Candy_buffet

oh, and, why would a candy buffet only be fitting at a school function? that's rather silly. almost like saying alcohol should only be in bars, dance floors in clubs, food in restaurants....well you get the picture. i guess it's safe to say that weddings are personal and everyone should be able to have any kind of party they want (so long as it doesn't involve violence).

I'm doing a candy buffet, FI and I are so excited, we love candy. We could care less whether or not our guests like it. It's cool to set up and look at as decor, and we love the stuff were using, so if we are left with it, good for us.

I also think it allows for a great selection so if people wanna take part they can, or they can skip whatever.

I also think favors should be given out, it's a thank you for coming, whether you like it or not doesn't matter, the bride obviously did or she wouldn't have chosen them.

People on this post are starting to get really rude I feel.

Who doesn't love candy?  My FI and I are doing a candy buffet bc we went to a wedding where there was one, and it was amazing.  Just the feeling of standing in front of dishes and dishes of delicious little items was enough to convince us to do the same.

The worst favor I received was a mini bottle of hand sanitizer in an organza bag.

@ justacameragirl - LOL an open bar is a candy buffet for me!!! haha

The worst favor I have ever gotten was a candle in the shape of a bride at a shower. On the drive home I couldn't understand what I was smelling that smelt like bug spray and was giving me a headache. An hour into the drive I realized it was the candle and threw it out the window! I swear I kept smelling bug spray for a WEEK!!!!!!

I think candy buffets are AWESOME!  I love candy.  I love coordinated colors.  And after dancing my butt off all night, I feel I have earned some candy!  Plus, if the guests don't eat all the candy, the bride and groom are not stuck with a useless item like... 50 "Byron" birds, haha.  It's candy... not exclusive to the wedding.

We're doing matchbooks.  I don't care if they're cheesy, I know they are in fact, but I find that I light matches on a regular basis, and I don't care what's on my matchbook.  So, I assume that other people would feel the same way.  Plus they were like $80 for some obscene number (300?), and we'll just set them in a bowl by the door and people can take them if they want to.

I also think it's totally fine to not have favors and I would not be offended to leave a wedding without one.

At a recent bridal shower, I got some kind of glass... thing. No one knows what it is. It's a glass ball that rests on a glass base. Except it kind of looks like one is a salt shaker and one's a pepper shaker. But why would you want a salt shaker in the shape of a disc? My mom thinks maybe it's for potpourri or something. It's not labelled.  I might have to throw it out because I can't see the Salvation Army wanting it.

At my FH's friend's wedding, they gave out bird house wind chimes.  I'm not really sure whether they were meant to be used primarily as a bird house or a wind chime.  I'd imagine the birds wouldn't appreciate the music.  We wound up giving them to our friend's child, who went home with about a dozen.  I felt bad because I don't think they were cheap, but we certainly don't need two wind chimes.

We're doing a cookie buffet - worst case scenario - leftovers!!!

This thread has been really funny to read!

For me Favors = Landfill most of the time.

Fake bird thingys, plastic swan thingys, booze thingys, cheap pen thingys - and how many tacky refrigerator magnets with pics does a girl really need?

Even the food thingys are usually bad becuz they are cheap quality.  If I'm going to spend precious calories on chocolate, it's going to be Callebaut, not M&Ms or whatever cheap chocolate they put in those fountain thingys and give you marshmallows (definitely mystery food) on a skewer for.

I used to like scented candles.  Then I found the scents cause cancer.  Yikes!  Now I put only true vanilla drops on a light bulb at home.

Now the traditional stuff with true meaning, like the Greek gal and the Jordan almonds - that I respect.  HUGELY.

I think favors for kids' parties is how the whole thing started.  Kids LOVE taking home a prize, no matter what it is.  Let's leave favors to the kids.

funny thread, my fiance even enjoyed it (the few posts I read to him!)

We are doing a candy bar & also giving mini terra cotta pots with flower seeds in gift boxes with tags that will also double as escort cards. I'm pretty sure there will be lots of people who won't bother to plant the seeds- but as this thread has proven, most favors (unless edible) are useless...so might as well do something we (or I) like. Right? What do you all think? =)

that said, i'm probably not doing favors - just maybe a big bag of those hated jordan almonds for me!

also, i think this favor thing depends on your culture - my FI is form New Zealand, and that is where we are getting married - and when I brought up the favor question he looked at me like i was nuts because apparently it is not done where he is from.

although boy, i would love to get some of the candy (they call cany Lollies though!) they have in New Zealand as a favor - they are so yummy!

um, i guess i'd better go find myself something to eat!

i love m&ms and hersheys and reeses and sugar daddies etc. but perhaps i'm not as sophisticated as some of the ladies here.  i think there should be a fun aspect of a wedding and well candy buffets are just darned fun!! i love as an adult going into a candy store and well being a kid again!! and i'm nearly 30.... lol!! so yeppers there will definitely be a candy buffet when i get engaged and the only thing that will be sophisticated about it will be the apothecary jars they are put in because i think they're gorgeous.

@crebre80 - I consider myself pretty sophisticated about most things (except wedding planning, that I'm clueless about) but I just can't hate on some candy - ANY CANDY whether it be pricey choc truffles or jellybeans or m and ms!  I don't disciminate when it comes to sweets!
