Would this dress be appropriate for a black tie optional wedding as a guest?

I've been invited to a black-tie optional wedding and was wondering if this dress would be appropriate.  Is it too sexy?  (I know it looks really short on the model, but I'm only 4'11", so it will look longer on me!)

I was also looking for a bolero to wear over the dress in case it gets cold, and I love this one...but I'm afraid it will clash with the dress since they're both patterned...what do you think?

    Thanks!!

I don't really like it. Maybe on you it would look different but I prefer the blue dress in the 2nd picture! Don't like the bolero with the first dress, it doesn't really go.

I like the dress but I think it is a little casual for black tie optional. And I agree with PP that the bolero would not go. I LOVE it though. It would look great with a plain black dress.

    Good luck!

Honestly I wouldn't wear it bc to me it resembles a nighty too much. :( Sorry. I would look for something a little more formal.

@instantcoffee:  It is very young and cute. You can pull it off if you are under 25, very thin and it is a summer wedding. If you have boobs and ass this will be a little inappropiate for a wedding. The bolero does not match.

a couple small differences would make it more appropriate, either a more formal fabric or a little more length. It does say optional but if your going to purchase a dress it should probably be more like the requested attire.

No, I don't feel it's appropriate. The fabric says prom, not black tie and as others have expressed, it's a bit short.

Thanks everyone, I'm glad I asked!  I do almost like the bolero more than the dress...so maybe I have to get a dress to match the bolero. ;-)

I struggled with this in december and started a thread on it haha. Everyone suggested to me to go full length gown and I did and i'm glad I did, I ended up wearing my sisters BM dress from my wedding...black a-line. I think you can get away with a cocktail dress or something shorter but it def needs to be more formal. The dress is pretty though!

@LGenz:  Agreed. Definitely would not wear to a wedding which is black tie optional.

OMG. That looks like a neglige on that model. I was like DRESS? What DRESS? LOL. I just see black tie as something a little more . . . formal and buttoned-up.

@LGenz:  That's what I was afraid of!  Unfortunately dresses that are meant to be knee-length on most people are way too long on me because I'm so short (4'11"), so I usually have to get shorter dresses for them to look proportional on me.  I thought I could get away with the dress by wearing a bolero to cover my shoulders, but it sounds like it would be best to just get something else.  Thanks again everyone!

@totheislnds:  I've never been to a black tie anything wedding (most of our friends have more casual-type weddings), so I don't know what people normally wear :-)  I'll look up your post!

I'm going to agree with most PPs above me- a little too sexy and not fancy enough.  By no means do you have to wear a long gown, but the dres should feel a little more fancy.

I'll echo what others have said. I definitely don't think it is formal enough for a black-tie optional! The last wedding I went to with that dress code I wore a floor length dress with straps. There were a few women in shorter cocktail dresses but they were quite fancy for the most part.

If you want to follow black tie dresscode, itll need to be tea length or floor length. no knees!

I have lucked out at Nordstrom Rack several times, so if theres one near you, give it a try!

When I think of black tie, I think of elegant and classy. This looks like a cami.

@MrsNeutrino:  Hmm, budget...as low as possible? :-)  Actually, I think I'm okay with anything under $200.  A little over $200 is okay if I really love it.

I was originally looking for a silk chiffon dress that's fitted around the waist, above the knee or full length (tea length doesn't work with my height, unfortunately), halter or spaghetti straps (strapless is okay if the bodice is fitted enough), in black, burgundy, or plum.  I haven't found anything I love yet, but I do like these other dresses a lot.  I suspect full length dresses may be out of budget, though, especially since I would have to get them hemmed.

This is poly chiffon, not silk, so I'm not sure what the quality would be:

This one looks like it would be flattering, but it's very fashion-forward...not sure if I'm daring enough:

I love the draping on this, and it's silk chiffon, but possibly even too formal and probably too expensive!  I'm also not sure about the belt:

I hope these choices are better than the first one ;-)  If anyone can think of any more...I would love to see them!

Personally, I love that black is very formal and slimming, but I might look for something with a little more material and less "light". It just resembles a slip, especially with the thing spagetti straps. I dont know -__-

I had a black tie optional wedding. I'd say most girls wore cocktail dresses, and a few wore full length. It's definitely not required to wear a "gown", since it's "optional". I think good shoes and accessories are really important in this case.
