Hi Bees, I need some input on reception seating. My Fiance and I are going for a “Classy Country Western” theme and the wedding is taking place on his family’s dairy. I am basically trying to achieve a nice, semi-formal outdoor wedding without all the cheesy western elements. That being said we are opting for long tables over traditional round tables because I want a friendly, family-style vibe during dinner. I would like to know if you personally would be annoyed sitting at a long table with nice wooden benches opposed to individual chairs?
The only problem I am seeing is a.) women with shorter dresses “climbing” over the bench to sit down, and b.) people not being able to push their seat in to their liking. However, I think that the “look” is more accomodating to our wedding theme over the traditional fold up chair.
I need your thoughts! My mom and I are going rental shopping this weekend and I am trying to pull my ideas together! Thanks 🙂

I think it would be fine, and no it would not annoy me.

i think it would be nice looking 🙂 just usually it’s easier for people not to have to climb over the bench (possibility of kicking someone, especially if cramped) and people will otherwise have to keep getting up in the middle of eating to let others out, but go with what you feels right for your wedding 🙂

I don’t think I’d be annoyed, but I wouldn’t like it, because of the reasons you listed. Short dress, trying to get in and out comfortably would be an issue, I’d probably feel trapped once I sat down. I prefer a chair, honestly. Have you checked out folding wood garden chairs in a dark wood finish? Still rustic, but easier for the ladies. Also, depending on your dress, you may have a hard time getting in and out yourself.
ETA, this is the type of chair I was referencing.

I think you should be okay. I mean, I would prefer a chair for the reasons you stated and also because not having a back rest for extended period of time can get uncomfortable but I wouldn’t be annoyed with it per say.

I’d be uncomfortable. I like having a back to my seat.
Also, the old folks might have a hard time.

@ThingsThatShine: Good point about the older guests!

Definitely agree about the back support. That’s what would make me uncomfortable.
Also, how long are these benches? How many people would fit on a bench?

I think it would look really cute, but benches are really, really rough on my bad back!

My back starts to hurt without a backrest after like 20 minutes and I’m only 28! Can’t imagine the older folks.
Plus while I wouldn’t like climbing over it in a dress, I could handle it. But how are the old ladies going to do that?
I think the look would be lovely but it wouldn’t be practical. Go with a garden chair like a PP suggested.

@wildcatjack: I think it sounds great with your theme! It’s very intimate, casual and fun.

My only issue would be the climbing in and out esp after drinking, I am not the most stable person normally add booze and a bench to climb over and I may be the drunk on the floor… Ooops! I do think the rustic chair may be a betteroption.
That said thou I wouldn’t bitch or complain about it if I went to a wedding that had them…
