So this is actually the first post that I have written (but not the first I’ve responded too). It’s one of those Saturdays where I’m home alone, after working all day, and I just want to chillax! But my neighbor is having some kind of party (understandable, last weekend before Christmas) and I can hear nothing but bass, bass, bass!
For reference, I live in a townhome community (and for the most part, a very family/working professionals oriented type of neighborhood. Not really a big house party area). The houses are structured in a way that levels don’t all perfectly align one another but our living rooms are still back-to-back. Normally there is no problem with noise from neighbors on either side but tonight is obviously an exception. My question is…how late is reasonable? When would you be annoyed, if at all? TV isn’t really working to drown it out. So far I’ve even recognized a few songs…there’s definitely been some Eminem and some MJ. It’s almost 1a and I’m not even trying to go to sleep anytime soon because it’s carrying around the house. Thoughts?

Haha, I’d be calling the cops.

@twentyeleven: Does your city/town have a noise ordinance? If so, whatever time it kicks in would be the time I’d ask them to tone it down and then if necessary, call the police. Where I live, it’s 11pm so they’d have been shut down long ago. Can you call your neighbor or go knock on the door? That is the kinder and gentler way to do it IMO.

i would be fine with anything as long as I got advanced notice (like a week). That way I could make plans to be away or at least would know it was going to be a loud night so I wouldn’t be so annoyed.
I would wait it out for tonight and tomorrow go over with a plate of baked goods and kindly request that they let you know in advance when their next gathering will be.

@Mrs Grape: @tootietoo2: I guess I’m not so nice because calling the cops after it hit midnight and wasn’t turned down was definitely my first thought, haha. Unfortunately SO didn’t agree when I called to ask his opinion.
@nut9108: I do agree that I’d be much more inclined to let it go had they given us any notice. We don’t really talk to them though and they didn’t feel the need I guess.
I guess it’s the not being notified in advance coupled with having worked literally all day on my feet that makes me feel more like the Grinch than full of holiday cheer tonight 🙂 Thanks ladies for your suggestions. I like the baked goods idea, I’ll probably give that a try!

Girl this is an every day/night occurance in our apt. Our neighbors keep their kids up at all hours of the day. I know when my neighbor is mad because he will play country music so loud I can hear the words clear as day. I’ve said something to him, I’ve even gone down at 20 til 5 in the morning because we couldn’t sleep because he lets their 2 year old kids play with their tv in their bedroom and it’s loud enough to hear the words. You can’t really do anything to get back at them because they most likely don’t care. I would try and say something to them a couple of times. If it doesn’t work then call the police. Good Luck.

I’d be ticked already. At the very least invite me or drop off a bribe because you’ll be keeping me up all night. How rude!
i would be ticked but i as they normally dont do this and it is the holiday season i would be thinking its an out of the norm occurance and let this one go

11pm is usually the cut off for noise restrictions. varies by municipality.

It is annoying and I would be mad too but I wouldn’t call the cops if this is the first time they have done it. They definitely should have given you advance notice but I think at this stage the best you can do is wait it out or go and knock on their door and explain that you can hear them.
However… if this then happens again – call the cops asap!

I’d be really pissed. I think having a cup of tea and taking a warm bubble bath may help you unwind from work and ease you into sleep, even with the bass bass bass.
Sending hugs your way, hope tomorrow is better for you!

I would knock and say something like, “hey, the bass is shaking my walls. the volume isn’t a problem, but could you turn down the bass a bit?” personally.
Do you know your neighbors? are you on good/friendly terms with them? That helps a TON in situations like this!

Definitely didn’t call the cops, don’t worry! It was just my first thought since I was annoyed. I really just would have appreciated the advance notice but like you guys said, it’s not a regular occurrence so I let it go. I didn’t even say anything today, mostly because I haven’t been home and didn’t really have a chance. Maybe if I see them in passing.
And a hot shower and some Benadryl did the trick 😉
ETA: thanks for the support ladies! It was at least comforting to know you guys would feel the same way -for the most part 🙂

this happened to me a couple weeks ago. i live in an apt in nyc though, so i’m actually surprised it hasn’t happened more! but it was really loud 80s karaoke–i couldn’t quite tell where it was coming from–either above me or in the building next door/across the air shaft. soooo loud! i just pouted and eventually fell asleep around 2am….boooo loud neighbors!

Next time just give them a friendly knock on the door and ask them to turn it down… We just had a holiday party last night and we were a bit loud. I did end the party at 11:30 though, so hopefully they weren’t too pissed. It’s the only party we’ve had since we moved in. I’d hope that if my neighbors were peeved at the noise they would ask us to keep quiet first before sending the cops out on us!!
