@linnylou_88:  Nope. I don’t care if anyone in my workplace likes me on a personal level. I have friends for that.

Agreed. I would aslo rather have a competent boss than like them as a person.

Just as I don’t care if they like me, I don’t care if I like them or not.

Agreed. I don’t come to work to be friends with my co-workers. I’m here to do my job, do it well, and get paid well for it.  Go home and live my life.  I don’t bring work home with me and I don’t bring home to work with me.

@linnylou_88:  Yes, I would. I need to know my boss trusts me, and if he doesn’t like me as a person, chances are he doesn’t fully trust me, and probably doesn’t acknowledge my competences fully. By doing so, I will of course resent my boss.It will become a vicious circle.

I need my workplace to be a place when I blossom as a professional and as a human being. A workplace with a boss who doesn’t appreciate me would not allow that, and I wouldn’t want to work there any longer.

My relationships with my previous bosses whom I liked also as a person has shown how loyal and devoted I was to this workplace. I’ve stayed YEARS longer than other places. It’s a win-win situation : it makes me feel competent, the boss has a good employee he or she can trust and knows will give their 100% for the company.

@linnylou_88:  People can say it’s fine, but I was repeatedly treaded like a second-class citizen when my boss’ second-in-command hated me.

She loved my work! But hated me. So I frequently had vacation requests turned down for no reason, got all the worst shifts… It was miserable!

I couldn’t care less if he/she liked me or not. I’ve worked so many jobs where your success is based off of whether or not the person in charge likes you as a person, not for the work that you do. I want to come to work, do my job, go home and live my life. I don’t want to talk to my boss about it.

Nope.  I go to work to do my job and do it well.  If my boss is satisifed with my performance, that’s all I care about.  I’m not at work to make friends.

Yes, it would probably bother me deeply.

Yes, I do care if my boss likes me or not. Let’s face it – most places of work are not 100% based on your work, but on the way you behave, interact with co-workers, what your personality is like, etc. I have never worked in a place where people weren’t judged or treated differently based on those things IN ADDITION to their performance.

I work in an industry where we all work long hours with each other, every day, and we have to get along well in order for things to work. Sure, not everyone here is friends with everyone else, but it definitely makes working together much better.

If it came down to it, and I had to choose between two different employees who both delivered well at work, then it would come down to their personality. Do I even like them? Do we get along? Anyone who thinks these things don’t come into play for their jobs are kidding themselves.

No, as long as (s)he’s fair.  But life is definitely easier when you’re liked.

@linnylou_88:  Yes and no.  I’d like to be able to get along with them, but it wouldn’t be a requirement.
