    How do I know if my periods are irregular?


    To answer this question, it is helpful to talk about what a regular menstrual cycle might look like. (Note: the total length of your menstrual cycle is the number of days from the start of one period to the start of your next period.) It may be surprising to hear that you can be considered “regular” even if you don’t have a period every 28 days. According to anatomy and physiology textbooks, a woman with a regular menstrual cycle has a period every 23 to 35 days that are predictable in nature. This means that you can be considered regular even if your period comes every 23 days or every 35 days or anywhere in between, as long as your cycle length doesn’t typically vary by more than a couple days on either side.


    On the other hand, an irregular period is defined as a menstrual cycle that is consistently shorter than 21 days or consistently longer than 36 days.  You can also be considered “irregular” if your cycle length varies significantly from cycle to cycle, sometimes lasting 28 days, then 40 days, then 32 days.




    I would definitely speak to a different doctor if I were you.

    If you don’t trust your doctor, find another one.  Doc should know better than internet strangers.

    @proudcatlady:  Irregular! Mine are similar, and I have PCOS. I used to have to go to multiple docs at a walk-in, and none of them including my now family doc thought that it was regular. I find it very strange that yours thinks that is normal!

    Also, I do believe that an 8 day variation between cycles would have you classified as “moderately irregular”, as I am – except around 2 times a year I have 59+ day cycles.

    @proudcatlady:  Is your Luteal Phase consistent?  So many things factor into the follicular phase before ovulation.  That’s typically what varies.

    @proudcatlady:  That’s really creepy.  I’d move on from her…and I’d stick with the progesterone cream!  What does your OBGYN think?

    Since I was 16 my periods were similar (varying lengths) to yours. Never shorter than 29 days but anywhere from 32 (average for me) to 45 and I think I even skipped a month once.

    I think I was training too hard, since I was working out 6 days a week. When I calmed my workouts a bit (right around when we started TTC) they weirdly synced to a 28 day regular cycle. It was REALLY strange; I can’t help the feeling that my cycles got performance anxiety cause I started charting!

    I wish I could be of more help! I hope you’re able to get to the bottom of this, but I think it might be life-style related.

    @proudcatlady:  While they were irregular I was training up to 15hrs a week – lifting weights 2hrs twice a week, speed & agility training (mad cardio) 1hr twice a week plus rugby practices & games. Sundays off.

    I started the Insanity! program on my off-season instead of all this (<1hr, 6x a week)since I wasn’t playing varsity anymore & my periods chilled out within 1-2 cycles. They shortened from 32-36 to 28 days and I WAS FLABBERGASTED! Everyone’s body is different but I definitely think I was overdoing it.
