Being Nude (especially public nudity) is a much bigger issue in the USA than in other parts of the world.
You will find that there are many topless beaches for example thru-out the Caribbean. And yes some that are fully nude or “clothing optional”
It really isn’t a big deal… you partake or you don’t it is up to you.
There are certainly Rules of Etiquette that go with nudity.
Make up your mind if this activity is for you… but if it isn’t do not stand around and GAWK (this is a huge issue on some Beaches in the Caribbean… where those who like to sunbathe “au natural” state they can’t stand the tourists who come just to look see) That is voyeurism plain and simple… and well kind of gross.
Respect people’s privacy. Do not take their pictures !!
Be discreet… rubbing suntan lotion all over your “private bits” in public is seen as being a bit of an attention grabber. Do your first application before you take your clothes off back in the Hotel. And if you need to reapply… don’t stand up and make a big performance out of it (or have your BF / SO / Fiance / Husband rub it on your boobies !!)
If there is any sort of furniture around… be it a chair, sunlounger, or bar stool at the cafe… bring a towel to sit on if you are going bottomless.
Better yet, don’t feel you have to be naked all the time… there is nothing wrong with slipping on and off your bathing suit as appropriate.
In my experience (somewhat limited), there is no pressure ever to participate at all, be that fully or partially. You do what you feel comfortable doing. For example at a fully nude beach, it is perfectly acceptable to just go topless. Many report that they went to such beaches, were a bit nervous about the whole thing and left. Others say they got comfy and lay on their stomach with their top undone / off, and eventually were able to roll over without issue. Some say, they got comfy with that and then took off the bottoms. Others have said they just arrived, and plunged in and stripped right off.
The one thing EVERYONE SAYS is areas of your body that don’t get sun normally are EXTREMELY SUN SENSITIVE. Caribbean Sunburns are bad enough… but get one on your buttocks or boobies, and you could be in SEVERE PAIN with SERIOUS HEALTH ISSUES (this from the lady who badly sunburned her foot last year on a Snorkelling Trip on a very cloudy day… while sitting on a beach chair out of the water, drinking one fancy umbrella drink… I figure I just missed a spot with the suntan lotion. It took 2 weeks for my ankle to heal)
Hope this helps,
