I just had the strangest conversation with a woman…
It is my SO’s 30th birthday party on Saturday night so earlier this week we put a letter in each of our neighbors mailboxes to let them know we would be having a party and that we would keep the noise to a minimum etc.. I put my mobile number on there just in case any of them had any issues on the night in the hopes that they would call us before they called the Police..
Before I go on I will just add that we only recently moved into our place and have not met any of the neighbors, if it was a housewarming party or just a backyard BBQ then we would have invited them to pop in but since it’s a special birthday we decided we just wanted it to be close friends and family.
I just had a call from my next door neighbours sister (she sounded about 70) letting me know that she is staying with her brother and received our letter in the mailbox and wanted to know if she could pop in for an hour or so as she is new to the area and would like to meet some new people.. I hesitated briefly so she assured me that she was not out to “meet a new husband or anything like that”. I was shocked.. I said yes it was fine that she stop by because to be honest I didn’t know what else to say, that and I never say no to anyone.. I just don’t know how to say no to people even when I really want to.
It’s not that big of a deal, when I told SO about it he just cracked up laughing and said I’d made a new BFF. I’m just wondering.. is this an odd thing for someone to do? would you ever do it? Everyone at work keeps telling me that she’s either going to be just a sweet lonely lady or a nutjob who won’t leave.. I’m hoping she’s not crazy!!! In saying that I don’t think she will end up staying long, the majority of our guests are young and love a good drink so it may not be her scene.
Has anything like this ever happened to any of you?
ETA: I didn’t state on the letter what the party was for I just said that we would be having a gathering at our place – not sure if that makes a difference or not. Also, here is a copy of the letter that we sent.. FYI we took this template off the Queensland Police website, it is what they recommend you use.
We wanted to let you know that we will be having a party at our home on Saturday 1st February and there may be a number of people parking around the area and additional noise from music and guests. The event is starting around 5.30pm and planned to finish at midnight, when the music will be turned down and any remaining guests taken inside.
We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience, and will do our very best to keep the music level and noise to a respectable level and ensure that our guests leave quietly.
We also wanted to let you know that the party has also been registered with local police.
If you do have any concerns on the night that we are being too loud or regarding the conduct of any of our guests please call us on XXXXXXXXX.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and apologise again for any disturbances, and assure you this will not be a regular occurrence
