For example, by combining your last names (not with a hyphen, but really mixing them) or just choosing something completely different?

I would, have always loved the idea (and hated the presumption I'd be the one to change) but I don't think my SO would be game at all.  He's fine w/me keeping my name though, doesn't care about that.

We joked about this b/c both of our families have already changed our last names in the past (shortened them when they came over to the states), and his last name kind of sounded like his and mine together already before shortened..

But being the traditional, old fashioned people that we are, we stuck with his current last name.

Personally - I wouldn't.  I find the concept kind of strange actually.  (Probably just the old-fashioned, traditional person in me).

I'm actually really old fashioned in the name change situation -- I'm taking his and dropping mine, period. I'm not attached to my family name and I like his. He doesn't care either way, but it's important to me!

It's hard to just make up a name. You have to actually do a name change. When you get married you can hyphen or hybrid without extra paperwork and fees. We looked into the options and are still undecided. FI doesn't wish to carry his last name because his Dad left when he was young and I like my last name but I never intended to keep it. So we are torn.

We didn't do this, but there are quite a few people (including a former prof. of mine who's pretty close in age to us) who mash our last names together. DH also gets called Mr. Myfirstname a lot, which cracks us up.

I wouldn't. I love the history of last names and following genealogy and wouldn't want to make up a name that had no meaning other than what I decided for it.

My best friend (in jest) suggeste Sod'a for ours. I said we could name our first child Cherry. :) In reality I'm taking his last name and moving my last name to my middle name, and dropping my now middle name.

I am doing this! I really wanted us to be united under one name but I'm not a fan of his(I also have a hard time pronouncing it) and he likes mine alot but doesn't want to offend his father. So we decided to choose a name that we both would like. We take walks a lot in our neighborhood and there is this one street that has awesome houses on it and we always say how we would love to live on this street but we will never be able to afford it and one day I noticed the name of the street had a nice ring to it.... Collahie... we aren't 100% but we are leaning towards that name.
