Yeah sure, it's only a small investment anyway. No big deal if it's a scam. : (2 votes)

Yes, only if the seller provides a written guarantee and serial numbers for the software. : (4 votes)

    are they in original packaging?

even if he provides a written guarantee, there’s really not much recourse for you if he’s lying. he could just keep your money. taking him to small claims would probably cost more than $400, and you would need his address which you might not have. so, a written guarantee from a college student on the internet is pretty much worthless.

Those are really expensive disks, but some colleges let their students buy them for like, $10 each. It’s crazy, and it makes me wish I had gone to a bigger school :). I would buy one disk for $30 to make sure it works before I would sink in all the money. Actually, I would just buy the disks I needed for $30 each. I can’t imagine needing 15 programs.

Ask him if it’s a student version. The student version retails for around $700-$800, so if that’s the case then $400 doesn’t seem like quite so much of a scam. Btw, the student version is basically identical to the ‘real’ one, so you’re not losing any features.

Also, you could download the free 30 day trial off adobe.com. Then (if he’s willing to give it to you before payment) you can insert the serial number he provides (you are prompted to enter a serial number if you wish when opening the trial). If it works, pay him! 🙂

Actually, now that I’m thinking about it… I installed Master Collection CS5 about a year ago and I believe there were only 4 or 5 discs… I think I would have remembered changing discs 15 times. Now I am beginning to suspect this is a scam.

Yes, but each of the programs doesn’t need it’s own disc. I just checked my software and indeed there are only 4 discs. Be wary of this guy, he might be trying to sell you a pirated copy.

That’s sort of tricky, I’m not really sure… because if the serial number works, it could be a pirated version still!

I bought a copy of Illustrator 8 off of ebay many years ago. The woman who sold it to me had already registered her copy with adobe, so we arranged to fill out an official transfer of license form (she signs, I sign, we mail it to adobe). Maybe you can ask this guy for a license transfer form and see if he acts weird?

And maybe ask him to take a picture of the software to show you?

My concern would be that even if you got it to work on your computer now – you have no recourse should you need to install it again.

Recently my laptop died on me. I had no way of uninstalling my Creative Suite but since I had the original software package and license number I was able to get in touch with Adobe and have them grant me an additional license so I can install it on a new computer.

Basically if you spend $400 you may end up saving a bundle right now but you may have issues IF it’s pirated/registered to someone else in getting any future support.
