Live in a fairly small (595 sqft) studio apartment for $600 to save money for a house or live ina bigger place (840 sqft) for $980 a month and the saving would not start for almost a year. The bigger place is in a way better part of town and seems like a safer option. But, we could easily save $400+ a month at this smaller place. We’ve also considered going the townhouse route with a roommate, but it’s up in the air still. As newly weds, we want a little privacy hehe. Opinions please?

I would take the cheaper apartment and save for the house. You’d be saving nearly $400 a month that can go towards your house. That’s $4560 in a year!

Agree, if you can make the smaller option work without wanting kill each other, I’d do that. Save save save and have your own house in the next year or so!

I would say the smaller place, but I’m scared of everything so I would probably end up with the one in the safer part of town. My and my boyfriend lived in a 550 sf apartment, and the size was not to bad, it really teaches you how to not be cluttered!
With that said, the quicker you can get a house the better off you will be now and in the future! I’m not sure what your income is, but bought our first house a year ago and we had no savings, but with our income we were able to get a grant for a down payment and FHA financing which made buying a house a more reasonable option than renting an apartment or house! Its amazing how inexpensive houses are in nice areas! (which it probably depends where you live..)

I keep going back and forth! With me not working next year, the smaller one seems less stressful and the house would come faster. FH will be a teacher, so any housing loan we get will not require a downpayment. We could look for a slightly nicer house and put some down in cash. Right now we live seperately and it’s nice having privacy… I’m so afraid with all the changes next year and not having any walls (except for bathroom) it’s going to take a toll on our sanity lol. We are very different people with different living styles.
The place in the not so nice area is newly renovated, but theres a shooting or robbery in the Area once a week! I’m terrified of that, but we’ll only be there 2 years max. Maybe I can negotiate them to lower the rent by $150 if we can pay a few months rent in advance.. that would be ideal.
