I am quite the bling lover. I am also very money conscious at times, and part of me doesn't want my SO to blow a huge wad of cash on my ring when we could be saving for a house or going on vacation, etc...

So for me, when it comes to my ring, I find that I really prefer a larger stone, probably an Asha, with a nice sparkly setting so as to satisfy my love for all things sparkly and not break the bank. SO keeps mentioning how he wants to spend "more than $1000" on my ring beacuse it's a personal thing, he just wants to know he took the time and saved his money to get me something beautiful that I'll wear every day for the rest of our lives. I find that very special and cute, and if he's dead set on getting me a diamond, that's fine, but he has and will continue to hear my opinion on the fact that he's more than welcome to get me a larger non-diamond. And if he's that adamant, we can always get an Asha now and upgrade down the road for an anniversary!  :)

So ladies, what do you think? Would you prefer the real deal? Or are you an alternative lady like myself? Or are gemstones for you? (I won't lie, a nice sapphire ring ala Kate Middleton would probably be second on my list!)

And does anyone else have a SO who is very opinionated on the matter? I never thought he would be, but as it turns out, he wants to be very involved in knowing exactly what I want!

I'd rather have a smaller diamond than a larger Moissy, CZ, Asha, etc. I love gemstone rings but they're not really my personal style.

I guess I'd say larger non-diamond, because mine is white sapphire:) It's .75 ct equivalent so it's not huge.

The rest of the setting is real diamond and sapphire and white gold, though: We plan to upgrade to a diamond when we have the money.

I LOVE bling, but I really don't want a diamond ering, for the size I want it would cost  more then I would fee okay with spending on jewelry! SO (FI, no ring lol) really didn't like the idea of getting me a 'fake' ring for the same reasons you mentioned- but honestly, I KNOW he can do all that stuff, and it doesn't mean he loves me less if I get a gem/sim diamond.  I'm reallllly hoping for a 3stone emerald asha, they are so beautiful, and they look very real- I have a set in studs (1 ctw) and I get complents all the time- no one has ever guessed they arn't natural diamonds, and unless asked I wont say a thing. If you want more bling for your buck, check out ashadiamonds.com, for 1,000-ish there are lots to choose from!

My second pick for a ering would be a ruby, with diamonds on both sides- (or ashas lol) I LOVE 3 stone settings! If it was practiacal for an everyday ering I would go amethyst, my fav stone ever, but I know it just wouldn't hold up to my abuse.

honestly, for my engagement ring. I would rather have a smaller diamond. because its the one time that I think I will get a real diamond from him where he completely picked it out himself and its just.... ahhh I think a big large CZ ring you could get for something else, but e-ring a diamond. :) not saying I dont like the mossinate - which i didnt know about until after I was engaged, but still! i think its insane how much my ring was and it wasnt even 1ct, but its the one time he can spend that kind of money on jewelry (in my opinion).

I forgot to mention, he really wanted the color and clarity to be amazing, so its a between .75 and 1 ct. I think its perfect because he chose it!

@JessieK: Ashadiamonds.com is one of the places I love. My absolute favorite is the Timeless Halo setting on BTD. I would love it set with an asscher, llike pictured here...

    Sorry if that's so huge.

That setting is $955, then a 7mm asscher is $300, so that fits his "more than $1000" billing. Not to mention the setting does include diamonds, so we'd both wiin!  :)

@JessieK: Let's see...I've had it since June of 2009, so 31 months. I'd say I'm pretty normal withthe wear and tear - the only thing I have to be super careful about is remembering to take it off when I go swimming because chlorine & salt water can discolour the stone (I also take it off to do dishes and shower). It's holding up beautifully - looks just as amazing as the day I got it!

@bebefly: I didn't know that salt water and chlorine discolored the stones. I guess thats why all my amethyst jewelry lost its color when I swam allot. I'm positive I would suck at remembering to take off my ring for stuff like that.  Great to know that it is't as soft as I feared,  I'm so scared I'm gonna bash my hand on somthing and my ring shatters or chips. Well, untill I finally get my ring, I'll just drool off yours!

I use to have a .20 solitaire diamond but lost it along with my diamond wedding band. The second go around my husband bought me a plain white gold band and a 14k solitaire setting with a 1 carat cz princess cut. We are going to get a asha or quorri in the next few weeks to put in it. So either works for me! I honestly didn't know much about Moissy asha ect until I done a bunch of research and if you love big bling but not the price I'd go for the alternative!

Personally I think it's possible to go TOO big with the ering stone, whether diamond or other stone. Sometimes I see a big ring and I think whoa, just because you can doesn't mean you should! With that said I tried to talk my FI into moissanite, but he insisted on a diamond so we went lower in color to get a larger stone and I couldn't be happier.

Great question! I'm torn...I DO love bling and I wish my diamond was a little bit on the bigger side but...

I'm gonna have to agree with @live laugh love though. This will probably be the only time I will ever get a real diamond so I wouldn't change it for a bigger moissy, CZ, asha etc.

Definitely a larger sim/moissanite. No question about it. I don't trust myself with diamonds at this point and time, maybe for an upgrade later down the line haha

Smaller for sure. I love bling but I have tiny fingers, so a big diamond would look rather funny and heavy on my wittle finger.

So here is my .20 solitaire & diamond band that I lost:

Very beautiful (to me) & I was VERY happy with them!!

Here is my new rings 14k plain white gold band & setting with a 1 carat CZ which will be replaced by either a asha or quorri. (Would have went moissy but I don't like their princess cuts/square brilliants.)

Would you rather have a smaller diamond ring or a larger non-diamond ring? : wedding G Force Video Card 2140162848

& Again I am very happy with them!!

I would love either obviously but for this second time around I know alot more about moissy, asha, ect to know that its a wise choice for my husband & I to get the most bang for our buck. Simple as that. :-) I can totally understand why someone would NOT want a moissy/asha or why someone would NOT want a diamond. Everyone wants different things in life & that is what makes the world go around.

If your SO is okay with asha/moissy & that is what you want I say go for it! You can indeed find a setting for over 1000 dollars if that is what he wants, you can even get diamonds in the setting then add a asha center! :-) Good luck & keep us updated!

I picked a small diamond, but to be honest, I just like small stone engagement rings! My engagement ring is .4ct and I wouldn't want it any bigger than that! It is a real diamond, but I wouldn't love it any less if it wasn't. :)

Larger moissy :) which is what I have. We could have afforded a diamond this size from Tiffany's, but instead we decided to knock 10 years off our mortgage AND I still got my dream ring!

The "differences" between moissy and diamond are so small (especially with the H&A amora coming out soon) is a diamond really worth thousands of dollars more? I don't think so. Diamonds are very overrated imo.

I would rather have a larger moissy or gemstone over a smaller diamond. I like bigger jewelery and couldn't care less if it was a diamond or not. I actually like the uniqueness (is that a word) of having a non-diamond. My RHR is a sapphire ring that I love and would've been happy to use as my e-ring. But, I got a moissy instead!

Honestly, I'd rather have a not-large not-diamond.  I am against diamonds, and I have very small hands.  I have a 1-carat Moissy, and I love it, but I often think it looks too big on my hand.

Size really doesn't matter to me...quality does.  DH loved that he could get me a very high-quality white sapphire with the budget he was on, versus a lower-quality diamond...just so happened it was bigger, too.  In fact, I was nervous about it being TOO big, but I love it.

I like the idea of the smaller diamond rather than a larger something else.  I never much cared about whether I got an engagement ring or what it looked like as far as size, shape, or metal, but I was pretty clear that if I was going to get an engagement ring, I wanted it to be recognizeable as such, where people look at it and go "oh, an engagement ring."  I think gemstone rings are still rare enough in non-Weddingbee world that people get a little confused when they see them, and I didn't feel like having to explain to everyone why I didn't have a diamond ring.  I guess a white gemstone would've worked too, but if the choice is between a larger something that looks like a diamond or a smaller actual diamond, I'd prefer the diamond.

Non-diamond, all the way!  I think diamonds are absolutely beautiful, and have nothing against anyone who chooses one over the other, but for me a 'sim' was the way to go.  My first husband wanted no part of anything that wasn't a diamond, and so he bought me a .53 ct solitaire that I absolutely adored (and still wear in a new setting on my right hand usually), but this time around I wanted something completely different.  I wanted it to be bigger in total carat weight, I wanted a pave band, etc.  My current ring is a cz and I absolutely adore it!  The center stone is .46 ct, and the whole ring is 1.16 cttw  Because it's set in sterling silver, I do know I'll have to replace it someday, but will probably just go with an Asha even then too!  Here's a pic :)

I always thought I would rather have a smaller diamond than a larger gemstone but once my FI started talking about gemstones, I fell in love and realized that we could get a gorgeous ring that was exactly what I wanted for the same price as a smaller diamond so thats what we went with! I love my ring and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

I have both moissanite and gemstone jewelry and I love both. I will never own a diamond. Maybe as sidestones in settings, but that's it. Though I guess I would wear one if someone gave it to me for free.
