So i found out tonight that my friend is getting married on October 12th, 2013. I’m already flying home for a wedding on August 31st 2013 (plane ticket is about $600 return) and I don’t think I can take more vacation time (even though it will be thanksgiving weekend). My grandfther’s 99th birthday is October 14th and he lives near me here and we’re planning a little party.
I’ve known this girl for 17+ years and is a close friend – although we’re bad about actually keeping in touch. Should I send a gift, a cheque, a gift card? What would you do?

I would definitely send something along with a nice note. Or even just a nice note.

You found out or you were invited? If you were invited then I would send a check and a nice note. If you weren’t invited, I would probably send a nice note.

@MsGinkgo: I would call first and explain (because close friends for 17+ years should be at weddings, but obviously you were not aware and it is an honest mistake). Then send something. Check/gift is your choice. I would also write something really sweet in the card. AND try to make plans to celebrate with her one night.

@SparkleBee11: @MrsBeck: We were texting tonight discussing plans for our mutal friend (who’s wedding we’re both attending on August 31st)’s bachelorette party. I asked how her wedding plans were coming, she asked about mine, she asked about my date, I asked about hers and she told me I should see something in the mail very shortly, it’s October 12th but she understands if I can’t make it where it’s so close to friend A’s wedding.
