@gpiglet: Hello, sorry I cant view the facebook photos as my facebook isnt working for some reason today 🙁
I am a makeup artist so heres my advice:
WHATEVER YOU DECIDE: Do NOT worry about offending anyone. Dont worry if you decide against using your friend, if shes a true friend she wont be offended. Just explain that you are very picky and dont want her to get stuck in the middle of it or something. If you choose not to use the store MUA, who cares about offending them…they will probably be more pleased that you are still paying that amount and they dont have to provide someone. You dont even need to say that you dont like their work, just that you have alternative arrangements.
USING THE MUA at the store: If you dont like the artists style from day one, I wouldnt be put off until youve had a trial because makeup is so versatile. Especially since its part of a package. Maybe there are review sites you could find from real brides that have used them? I post photos to my facebook page of me made up as edward scissor hands, the bridal look I want for myself, bridesmaids makeup, glamour, natural, ‘barefaced look.’ It really depends on what you tell the artist you want, otherwise they will have nothing to go on except their own creativity. I would have this free trial regardless. Unless you can ask them to take some of the price off the package because you dont want to use them.
DIY/FRIEND – if your friend is very good at makeup, she may still get nervous and she still needs you to lead her into what look you want. I would strongly recommend Pinterest for this. You mention too natural is not you, though on your wedding day any makeup artist will tell you that you want to look ‘like yourself on a great day only better.’ If you rarely wear makeup day to day, you need to think about that first look your fiance is going to have. Rather than ‘wow theres my girl’ it might be…’whos that girl ?’ If doing yourself, once youve researched, practice and practice. Get your foundation chosen in a store by an MUA as she can match it for you. I cant even do this on myself, just on other people!!! Because as much as Id like to I cant see myself at every angle and I need to know if my makeup matches face/neck/rest of body colouring not just my face. Also, you dont need to use the most expensive products to look good, its just application. My day to day make up is by Make Up Academy (MUA) as the palettes are dupes for urban decay.
So once youve had the trial and practiced with your friend, then you can decide.
BUT if you have the slightest inkling that she wont turn up, dont waste your time!!!!
Theres nothing wrong with doing it yourself either if youre not nervous(you say youve done someone elses!! This is an honour!! She must have trusted you so trust yourself 😉 but follow these tips:
1) Wear lipstick and brow powder. You may not usually, however both of these get washed out in flash photography so you need some colour in there.
2) If you are getting married in the summer, SPF foundation goes without saying, but if you are planning on having flash photography in the evening, or a wedding in autumn, spring winter (im in uk so they are what I go by as weather here is always dull) wedding please be careful not to buy a foundation that has any of this wording on it:
SPF, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxide = These chemicals cause flashback (face=white compared to body) Same goes for pretty much any product you are using on the day except highlighter but dont go overboard with that.
Hope this helps!! xxx
