I live in Ontario.
I’m a huge internet shopper.. and I just got cranked $32.49 for duties & customs.
I understand the need for this, seriously I GET IT, you buy something, you pay tax, cool. But how the HELL can I be changed that much for an item that is $50.00? AND I was charged something like $13.00 shipping in the fisrt place!
It just makes mad! I’ve considered getting a US PO box just so I can avoid this drama, but.. I just don’t see me commiting to that.
/end rant. haha

@Stephville: Working in the import/export field, I can sort of explain this. Duty & Customs fees are based on what the product is and how much it cost. Most likely, you paid the absolute minimum for the product that you bought. Most things 50.00 and under tend to have a minimum tax/duty charge assessed on it.
I’m sorry though. It does really suck. See if next time you can get them to include the duty/customs in with the shipping cost. (Tell them you want them to ship it DDP. That means they pay everything)

@Stephville: THIS!! I completely agree. It;s ridiculous. Customs fees, taxes, brokerage fees. WTF do they all even mean?

I hate that!!! Did it go through UPS? The last time that I got dinged big time (almost the same price as what I ordered!) it turned out to be “broker fees” that UPS tacked on without telling me.
Since then we use border pick up services mainly because a lot of the online places I go to have free shipping within the U.S. so its worth the drive down to pick it up.

@aithinne: Thanks for the info.. I’ve tried to get the company to ship differently in the past but they won’t they were great when they used to ship USPS but they now ship via DHL global mail, it seems like a lot of companies are going this route and it sucks! lol
@Baroness_Meg: I knooooow! Ugh! It just makes me want to flip out to the extreme! lol

I’m with you! Fellow Canadian and we get absolutely ridiculous shipping and duty fees. It’s not fair… we share land with the US, why can’t we share products!!! Drives me nuts finding something I want and then “oh sorry, we don’t ship to Canada” or “ok sure, the shipping total is $4877283 on your $20 item.” Ughhhh!

one of my best friends lives in the toronto area. for the past couple years, she’s had her textbooks shipped to me to avoid all the taxes. she just came down to pick them all up (i’ve been in buffalo). it’s crazy. she does it at christmas as well, to avoid all of the taxes and ridiculous shipping costs.
i think it’s absurd to charge so much for canadian shipping. and i still don’t understand the taxes and duty fees. i used to sit and laugh at the people hiding things in their cars after shopping, and putting on extra layers, or buying gift bags and boxes and saying things were birthday gifts (they do all of this around here, to avoid paying fees and taxes at the border). but then i was in the car with her once, after she’d come down to go shopping and pick me up for a weekend. they made her show reciepts and i’m pretty sure she got a bill.
