My center diamond has a giant X in the middle of it. When we bought it the jeweler told us it was 4 individul diamonds. But later when my FI and I looked closer we realized that it's acually one diamond with a giant x cut into it. We ddn't go back and ask because the guy was just a salesman at a diamond store and he didn't come off as a very knowledgeable person.. didn't want to waste our time.

I don't know what this means and sometimes I think bad things... like maybe they did that to disguise a poor cut or imperfections in the stone.  The X really makes it sparkle more though and it's kind of cool.. different.

I've tried to google X in diamond but came up with no hits. Does anyone out there know why they would have done this? Or have you ever seen anything like it?

Beautiful and unique ring...  Unusual cuts can be done for a variety of different reasons.  Typically it is because 1) there is an imperfection that they are trying to ameliorate/minimize 2) get maximal brilliance out of the stone 3) there was a weakness or error in cutting and this is the way they could best salvage the stone.

Does your certificate have any comments on it regarding the stone?  That might help you to understand.  It might say "drilled" which would mean they were removing an imperfection or make special notation about the cut.

Have you tried just taking it to another jeweler and asking them?

My ring isn't certified.  So I really don't have any info on it at all.  I called the company that I bought it from and they gave me the general info on it but I would have to send it in to get it certified.  I wish it were but I really can't justify spending money to get it certified now.  It's not like I'm going to get rid of it or trade it in so... oh well.

Well.. unless I hear differently I'm going to pretend like it's cut like that because of Doctorgirl's #2 option...

Thanks for the compliments.  Every girl loves to hear that someone else likes thier ring!

First, are you really sure is only 1 diamond?

It could be 4 of these: http://www.trilliondiamond.com/

Maybe you can post your picture here: http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/forum.asp?forumID=8

the people in that forum know a lot about diamonds and can give you an idea.

    Good luck!

I probably wouldn't bother to get it certified either, but just know that with an uncertified stone, all bets are off... so just assume it's #2 of the above and look at it and love it for it's unique and amazing attributes.  It really is cool!
