This may be TMI... I'm sorry. So first YI for me. I got the Monistat One-Day Combo pack because the symptoms are quite mild, but still annoying. WebMd said to wait it out if it was mild but after a week it still hadn't gone back to normal. So my question is this... How long after using the Monistat stuff do I have to wait to have sex? I've heard really weird answers from googling it, like wait three weeks because you could pass the infection on to him? Can guys get YIs?

Yes...you can pass a yeast infection to your man. If it still hasn't gone back to normal, it may not be a yeast infection...it may be a bacterial infection that you will need antibiotics for.

Some tips to fight off yeast infections....eat a cup of yogurt every morning (my GYN swears by this one). Don't use douches...and make sure if you use soap in your vaginal area, make sure you completely rinse it off.

Yes men can get yeast infections. There's a chance that he could get it from you and then you two would end up passing it back and forth. As for the monistat: you should wait 7 days after the dose to have sex. This allows your body to heal, and also allows it to get rid of all the medication. If you have sex too soon you risk irritating the tender tissues. The medicine also breaks down the latex in condoms.

I had one not that long ago- and yeah the answers online are all over the place.

Honestly- I just waited until I thought it wouldn't be painful anymore, since yours is mild I don't know how much this helps you

Yes, a guy can get a yeast infection put passing it on through sex is uncommon.

I would wait like 48 hours. I forget the amount of time my OBGYN says, but it wasn't that long. While you can give it to your SO, you can also just get them frequently, unfortunately. I would go with what JamaicaBride says, which is eating yogurt daily (or taking acidopholis) or watching your sugar intake if it keeps coming back and you've ruled out other causes, like BV.

    Ugh I hateeeee those!

As to how to help the healing process, I definitely agree with JamaicaBride - eat yogurt! But, you have to make sure it has LIVE CULTURES in it (check the label)!

Also - drink cranberry juice! Those are my two remedies!

Yeah.  So then they can pass it back to you.  I'm not sure about the one day packs.  But the monistat stuff always worked for me.

Some things you can try to help restore the pH balance:

    baths with vinegar

yogurt (eating is good, but you can also apply plain yogurt to your yeasty area -must be plain, no sugar)

garlic (same basic idea as yogurt, only make sure if you use that that you put the garlic in gauze or something.  Don't want it getting lost!  -Sorry about the TMI.)

sugar, carbs, wine can make people yeasty, - try to avoid them

antibiotics can disrupt pH balance -so take extra precautions in the future if you are on antibiotics to guard against a YI.

I find some of the "home remedies" help at the start.  If it's that bad I would talk to your doctor, or at least talk to a pharmacist to say you tried the one day combo that didn't work.  Is there something stronger?

KatieBug3017, I know cranberry juice works for UTIs, but I've never heard of it being used for YI.  Does it really work for you?

I think the one day monistat thing is working for me. It's a result of antibiotics. I'm just worried about having sex too soon and the possibility of passing it on to him. It's sounding like I should wait a few more days before having sex. Thanks for the advice! I think I'm going to get some yogurt tomorrow, see if that speeds the healing up! :)

You're supposed to wait until your treatment is over.  So, even if you use a one dose treatment, it says it takes a week to fully work.  Wait a week.

I would wait a few days. I would also use condoms for awhile because you can pass it on to your partner. This is hard because guys don't show symptoms like girls, so he could have a yeast infection and keep giving back to you.

Honestly, I would go to your OB0GYN because you may not actually have a yeast infection. You could have a bacterial infection or something else completely.

Good luck, I had reoccuring yeast infections for a year and finally got rid of them when I followed a gut feeling and went off the nuva ring. Worst year ever, having to think about treating a yeast infection monthly, ugh

P.S. I agree with the pps, eat yogurt, but make sure that it doesn't have sugar in it!

Ugh, I HATE yeast infections.  I used to get them all the time when I was on antibiotics a lot.

Definitely wait a while before sex and use condoms.  You can pass it onto your guy and they will not be happy.

Also, future reference, I don't advise using the 1-day monistat.  Use the 3-day.  I think the one day is a little too strong and I've found it doesn't always work.

not fun at all! ive gotten so many YI and i find that the oral pill treatment is a heck of a lot faster and easier than the monistat or canesten. go to your doc, get a prescription, but ask for refills to be allowed. and that way your pharmacist can just reorder and no need for repeat doctor visits. i found that monistat did not work once i passed the "mild" stage. hope that helps!!

I've had a few and found that the  prescription meds from the OBGYN helped. I also take a daily yeast infection homeopathic preventative called AZO for yeast infections.

Ugh, yeast infections suck! I get them whenever I take antibiotics, so... definitely been there! Whenever I've had one, we also use condoms and sometimes my OBGYN has told him to take the oral pill, too-- you may have already passed it onto him, or viceversa. I usually combine pill (Diflucan) + topical cream + vaginal suppositories (miconazole).

You should definitely see your OBGYN, it could be a bacterial infection; in that case, antifungals won't be of much help.

Oh and I agree with Tanya123, a good way to prevent and/or help treat YIs is cleaning the area with 1lt water combined with 2 tbsps white vinegar, this changes the tissue's PH making it harder for yeast to strive.

Good luck, hope it goes away soon!

Boric acid suppositories are worth checking out. Google "Yeast Arrest." No negative side effects, no prescriptions needed. While medications are great for killing the yeast, I find that boric acid is necessary to, erm, get *everything* back into the proper balance. Only downside is that it's a bit messy -- make sure you have some pantyliners on hand. But it's gotten so that I use 'em whenever I have to take antibiotics or even just think that anything might be "off." If you have recurring yeast infections and have eliminated the obvious culprits, you might try a 30-day or even a 60-day course of boric acid.

Also, if one particular antibiotic has led to you having a yeast infection, try another one next time.

That having been said, if you've *never* had a yeast infection before and think you might have one now, go see your doctor. Seriously. Monistat won't clear up a bacterial infection, and, not to be paranoid, but there is such a thing as vaginal cancer...
