I payed off my credit card today! You know what that means? Our 2 newest Furbabies are getting fixed on the 12th! Yay! I can't believe their previous owners let them go 4 years (the dog) and 2 years (the new cat) without them getting Spayed!

That will be so helpful especially so you can relax when you let them out knowing there won't be any little accidents.

Yay! Glad you're taking that step, not enough people do!

Don't you hate how crazy expensive it can be? FSIL and FBIL run a cat rescue, and Illinois doesn't give any discounts like some states do. Argh.

Yay for you! Every spay is a step in the right direction.

As to cost, just know that most vets make very little money or even take a loss when they spay and neuter! Spays are invasive abdominal surgeries, and most are well under $200. Try getting any other abdominal surgery for that price, especially with anesthesia and the whole nine yards.

Good job!  It's so important to spay and neuter your pets!  We only went through on heat cycle for my cat and we wanted to kill her!

@Opus - oh, I know, R is applying to vet school, so I know how little they truly make on certain things (especially equine vets). My point was that some state governments put in place incentives where they will refund you for spaying/neutering your animal. If you think about the money that this will save animal shelters/humane societies in the long run, I think it's a worthy cause! Illinois has no such incentives.

There is actually the Oregon Spay and Neauter Fund here. lol. So it's going to be about 50 buck for each of them. Not too shabby. It just pisses me off their previous owners never did anything! Our dog is a resuce from a Puppy Mill, so I guess that explains why she never got done. But the new cat is 2 and was living in an Apartment her whole life. Wth? Why can't people be responsible?

I'm so jealous! My small town doesn't have a low cost spay neuter program so I'm trying to save up the $250 to get my boy dog fixed. Luckily the girls are all taken care of.

@ lilyfaith: I am in vet school,  tracking equine! It's incredibly hard, but oh so worth it. State programs do help, but usually pay a very small sum and require vets to charge absurdly low fees. Most don't mind, because like me they think it's worth doing. When the client comes in, however, and complains about the high cost of a surgery done at a loss, it sucks.

@ northernazbride: even without a low cost program, that's really expensive for a neuter! Unlike a spay, it's a minimally invasive, quick and fairly easy procedure. Check around for better prices.

@Opus - good luck! Can I ask what school you're attending? I tried to get R to go for equine to save me money (let's be honest here, in the first week I had my mare, she ran a vet bill higher than my cat ever cost me!) but his heart lies with small animals, haha.

I've always thought it was worth the cost, and never complained. I just think it's too bad the states don't figure out a better way to subsidize spay and neuter clinics, etc. We see way too many people that can't afford animals at all, but they keep them, don't fix them, and let 'em at it. It's a struggle to fix every animal that comes through the rescue's doors, but that's the point! Every little bit helps.

Right on! My folks took in an abandoned animal a few weeks ago...she just had 13 puppies! BUMMER. Our local shelters are already overwhelmed with babies this season. Thanks for doing your part!

@ lilyfaith: PM me and I'd be happy to let you know. I'm a first year, so I just went through the application process and I'd be happy to answer any questions about that too. And even if your FI goes small animal instead of equine, he's still qualified to work on horses! I know plenty of small animal vets that do the basic work on their own horses.

This thread cracks me up.  I am all for neutering pets.  I have just never seen anyone so excited about doing it!

His Barista... two of my 3 pugs were puppy mill girls (forced to have many many babies) and we had to get them fixed. I felt so bad for them but I was also like, YAY! NO MORE BABY MAKING FOR YOU! Glad you are able to do it now! :)

Thank you!!! It drives me nuts when people don't fix their pets... it is healthier for them and prevents more stray pets!
