Desination Bride here!! I live in Hershey, PA and I'm getting married in Oahu, Hawaii. I have a few friends who live in Hawaii (I lived there as a lil' girl) but most of our family (from the groom and bride's side) are from the East Coast.
woo hoo! go DW brides! Live in NYC and getting married next month in Cancun, Mexico! So much to do, so little time...
Yay for DW brides! I live in Seattle, WA and am wedding in Mexico in March 2009! I'm excited to meet everyone who's also planning a DW wedding =)
Live in southern California, getting married in Sydney in November :)
YEY! I am from Jacksonville Florida, we are getting married in Belize in September!! So excited
I am in Atlanta, and I'm planning a DW in Islamorada, FL! (We are thisclose to signing a contract with our venue of choice...fingers crossed!)
Are you guys using a planner?
Planning online?
Visiting your site beforehand?
How have your experiences been during the planning process?
How many guests will be invited/attending?
My venue comes with a wedding coordinator.
Planning everything by email. I have no idea what my vendors sounds like...from my wedding coordinator, dj, travel agent...
Booked site unseen but a site visit is always helpful.
It can be a little nerve wrecking when you don't hear back from them for a couple of days. But I guess that's partly my fault cuz I choose to do everything by email to save long distance fees~ which I'm sure would add up. But I like to have things in writing so I can refer back to it.
I have 90+ people coming at the moment. I invited about 180?
Good luck!
Hey girl,
I'm from Orlando, FL and I'm considering a destination wedding. Can anybody advise on an exotic and beatiful location with onsite coordinators?
Thanks..
I'm still in the early stages of planning, but so far my experiences have been alright. I booked venue via phone, have been to site before, but not for wedding planning so I'm planning the venue by memory. I won't be able to afford a visit beforehand.
No planner. It's not in the budget, but I'm looking into getting a DOC just to ease my mind the day off. Most of my vendors were recommended by the lovely knotties.
We plan on sending out about 60 invites (give or take); that's about 120 peeps invited. We expect 15-20. Hopefully less rather than more. :o)
i'm a bay area native, planning to have a DW in oahu, june 2009. we are in the beginning planning stages, still trying to figure out if we're comfortable with our guests paying $700+ for an airplane ticket to hawaii...
We are using the hotel's coordinator and have been corresponding via email and I've spoken to her on the phone a couple times. Our budget won't allow us for a site visit, but I've gotten recommendations from previous brides there and have lots of pictures of wedding set-ups. We're planning on inviting about 60 people, and we know our immediate family are 100% coming, and alot of close friends have confirmed they are as well but that can always fall through. We are planning on having an At Home Reception the summer following our March wedding.
So far the planning has been going well. I think the hardest thing for me was realizing that emails aren't responded to right away due to the "island time" mindset there. I've gotten assurance from a previous bride who warned me of this but says the coordinator knows her stuff, so I'm not too worried since the coordinator's emails and phone conversations have been helpful so far.
davndee09: Airfare tickets have been a concern of mine as of late seeing how fuel costs are so high right now, but there are just some things that are out of our control. Our deciding factor whether or not to have a DW was whether our immediate family would be able to attend or not, so since they are on board then we will continue with our plans. It's hard to imagine that some people won't be able to make it for whatever reason, but that's what comes with DW already, and in the end I just keep telling myself that the one person who needs to be there is - my fiance. So everyone else coming is just icing on the cake =)
I was in touch with my resort's wedding coordinator (in Punta Cana, Dominican Repub.) when booking the ceremony time but other than that, nope. I'll meet with him when I get there to pick flowers and cake flavors but other than that, I'm thinking it will be pretty relaxed. After all, that's a large part of the reason why we're going away to get married. :-)
So far we hav 61 people confirmed, but there are 5 months to go so we'll see.
It's tough to plan when you've never been there but I've found that the Facebook group for my resort, plus TripAdvisor and Debbie's Caribbean, have been FANTASIC resources! Check 'em out.
@Jen4637... you are totally right! As long as your fiance is there, the rest is icing! Nicely put.
Jen4637 - my fiance actually said the SAME EXACT THING when convincing me to have a DW. i have to keep reminding myself to look at the big picture, and that everyone that's really important to me will go for sure.
Just back from my best friend's rather lavish Maui wedding. Her wedding coordinator needed to be killed! She was the worst and didnt even stay for the entire ceremony. She came highly reccomended by 3 hotels, I really dont think destination brides complain much or maybe the hotels have another agenda? All I can say is try to ask an outside source to confirm your choice...like a photographer or florist...anyone who is NOT connected with the person who reccommended the coordinator. Good Luck!
@ju1244 - sorry to hear it! I hope that the wedding was still beautiful despite it? You're right, it's a good idea to get a second opinion. I think the best is if you can find someone who actually got married at the same place! And when it come to that, what in the world did brides do before the Internet?? :-)
My fiance and I have decided on a destination wedding to Cancun in Feb. Does anyone have any suggestions on a possible wedding site? I am a little worried about not seeing the site before the wedding date but I guess people do it all the time. I think we will have around 100 people show up for the event!
Hi Destination Wedding Brides!
I'm so excited that there is a DW Board on Wedding Bee. I just registered on the site so that I could fully participate. :)
Congratulations to everyone.
We live in NYC (although he's currently working in Chicago) and we're getting married in Costa Rica, God willing. My family lives there so it'll be a great way for my H2B/his family/our friends to meet them and for my family to actually SEE me get married!
ihcoop13: Ahhhh...Belize! How lovely. I would LOVE to go there. My friends honeymooned there and their pictures were soooo beautiful.
I'm from NYC and will be doing a DW as well.. leaning towards riviera maya in mexico but am still doing research for other spots like los cabos or in the carribbean like Turks and caicos. any suggestions? any other NYC based brides out there?
Destination Bride here! I live in the US FI in the UK and we are getting married at The MAjestic Punta Cana!!!!
@Ms. Purple where in DR are you getting married?@
We're getting married in St. John USVI in July. We traveled to the island 2 years ago and the wedding is pretty much planned. If anyone needs info, let me know! Be happy to help!!
hello, hey Im from Edmonton AB, and yea we are having DW in Barbados next year very private and intimate..only us and parents...but planing a little reception after we get back.
DreamComeTrue: MissPurple was my old handle before I became Sea Breeze. :) I got married at the Majestic Colonial in Punta Cana. Are you doing the Majestic Colonial or Majestic Elegance? Both are so beautiful - you will love it!
I'm a DW!! We are in Upstate NY and gettin gmarried in Orlando, FL (Walt Disney World). We have a Disney Wedding Planner and she basically takes care of everything. The only thing we didn't book with Disney is our photographer (they have lots of restrictions!!). YAY for DW's!!
I am going to the Melia in Punta Cana!
We are planning via email with our wedding coordinator, simple, intimate and elegant ceremony and restaurant reception with 14 guests!
For those considering Mexico:
I considered it before choosing the Dominican Republic, but we changed our minds when we learned the requirements to get married. It is mandatory to have blood tests done IN Mexico - you can't have them done at home and bring your results only... Just a heads up!
I am getting married in January 2010 from Tacoma, WA, getting married on the ski slopes at Alpental Cascade Mountains.
WOOHOO! Destination bride here! We live in Virginia and are traveling to Orlando, FL for an intimate 20 guest Disney wedding. We had it down between a DW in the US Virgin Islands or WDW and Disney won because we had taken a trip to Hawaii together a couple years earlier :). Yay for DWs!

I absolutely adore the new local boards here on the Bee and think they're... well, the bee's knees (har har).
But although I live in Vancouver, Canada, I'm getting married in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic!
That's why 'd LOVE to connect with other brides who are planning a destination wedding - to exchange thoughts, ideas and yes, maybe a few rants. :-)
If you're also a DW bride, give a shout!
