So, I had a conversation with FI about dresses last night. Apparently it’s the norm here in Japan to rent dresses. He was really surprised that most women in the U.S. buy their dresses.
He helped me find some dress sites to look at, and I found a couple that I liked, like this one.
And then I looked at the price. $4,500. To rent it.
If it’s normal for Japanese brides to pay thousands of dollars to rent a dress, then I most certainly can not afford to buy one. Seriously, I could buy at least three Maggie Sottero Gatsbys (my dream dress) for the price of renting that one up there.
Just had to share that discovery with y’all. $4,500 to rent a dress. Good lord.

@Jabberwocky: that seems insane? Why the high prices – can’t imagine the purchase price if that is the rental figure!

Thats crazy! Good thing for the internet and couriers!

Can you buy your dream dress and have it shipped to you? I’m sure these rental places have seamstresses. Thats insane though!

I seriously just gasped out loud. My goodness just buy one if it is less expensive than renting one there and have it shipped to you.

@Blackie: No idea. Usually my answer in cases of strangeness like this is “Because Japan”. I really don’t know if this is normal rental price or just this site though.

Whoa. That is insane.
I’m not very familiar with Japanese wedding customs re: dresses, but it’s common in Taiwan to do LOTS of staged photo sessions. I was under the impression that there were a bunch of dresses at the studio to wear for these.
I remember watching one SYTTD episode where they were trying to find a wedding dress to out-do this gal’s engagement party dress (I think she spent $3K to rent that dress). Crazyness!
Good luck with your dress hunt! Maybe there is someone in the States who could help you buy your dream dress and have it shipped to you? Depending on your dress size it might be hard for you to find something suitable in Japan (I’m a “normal”/”average” size in the US, but something like XXXL in Taiwan).

@Jabberwocky: I don’t know about exact pricing but I do know that here in Texas when I went to see rental dresses they were usually MORE than the sell price in bridal stores. I turned, left, and decided I would just buy the dress. I was floored that renting was more expensive than buying!! At least if you buy the dress you can resale it. Crazy.

As much as the bust on my wedding gown needed to be taken in, I can’t imagine paying $4500 to rent a dress that I (presumably) woudn’t be allowed to alter!

@nl: My mom’s going to call around bridal stores at home and see what we can do. The only concern is that I haven’t tried on any dresses, so what if what I like in pictures isn’t what I like on me?
@Anise: I’m a size 4 in street clothes, and medium to large in Japanese sizes, so I fit, but I’m a lot more busty than the average Japanese girl, so that could be problematic.

@Jabberwocky: Can you try on some dresses wherever you go to find your rental dresses in Japan? I’d be really out of my element there!
