I really am just absolutely dumbfounded. You know there are tons of budget issues going in with school districts. The district that I live and grew up in was looking to close an elementary school. It an urban area and there are 6 elementary schools. So for months there have been rumors about what was going to close and certain affluent schools were up in arms because they thought that they were going to be closed because they are the smallest (and least diverse). The largest school, I figured was pretty safe because they could handle the influx of a large number of displaced students.
So last night the Superintendent, recommended the largest school close to save money!! What?? You will have to bus over 500 kids throughout the city into already crowded, falling apart schools and that will save money? Then the board voted on it today and they okayed it!! And three board members have kids in the affluent school. They showed the numbers of what school gets what number of kids…yea how many are the affluent school getting?? A whole whopping 0! They say its because its already at capacity…sure it is, you just want to keep it the way it is and not let those po’ folks ruin it. I’m sooo pissed off by this whole thing. That damn building will just sit there and decay. If they had just closed the affluent school, the number displaced would be wayyy lower and the building is in a prime place for a business or the local college to buy (which the district could use the money, duhhh)and actually use it!
Many parents said they would send thier kids to charter schools to take the money away from the district. I really hope they do, just so they will understand how stupid and biased thier decision was.
I just needed to vent about that, sorry! I feel better lol
