If it's a coupon I tip on what the total would have been (but I can't remember the last time I used a coupon). I tip up if we were comped some part of our meal though.

I voted the first but that's not 100% accurate - I might tip more, but not the entire amount of the coupon, depending on how much it was ($2, sure - $20...hmmm....)
I usually tip a good bit more if a few drinks are comped. I think it's kind of understood that if you have a good rapport with a serving staff and they comp your drinks sometimes that at least part of that goes back into the tip.
I'm thinking more of small establishments where the management also knows us and oks these comps, though.
When my SO worked at Bennigans they would have the five dollar meal deal and we would get that half off, I would always give what we would have spent had he not had it half off in the tip. But of course that is a small ticket.
I also knew that b/c of the five dollar deal the waitstaff was getting really shitty tips most of the time and needed the extra money.
I just tip on what the actual total is. I've never thought of tipping the amout of the free item...it's not the waitress who's paying for it! 'Course, I don't have many coupons for free items, just gift certificates, so I've never really run into this issue. : )

The Tipping habits thread now got me thinking.
Let's say you find a coupon for a free appetizer, do you take the amount that you would have paid without the coupon and give it to the waitress in addition to your tip?
