I pretty much knew it was coming. The only thing that threw me off was that I was expecting it for a while, so when he finally did it I was surprised (just cause I thought I was getting lead on again). It's fine though. I thought it was perfect.
I picked out the ring and was with him when he bought it, but he kept it for three months before he proposed and the actual proposal was a surprise.
I had jokingly given him a deadline of Christmas 2008 and we had looked at rings, so I knew a proposal was coming at some point. He totally surprised me though by proposing in October on an ordinary day. It was nice to be surprised.
Complete surprise. I would not have been thinking about a proposal until six months after he actually proposed.
Totally knew it was coming...we decided to get engaged, then he went to Iraq for 8 months, then he had 14 days of leave before he left to go back to Iraq. Our other option was wait 8 MORE MONTHS and we wanted a June wedding...so we would have been looking at June 2010 instead of June 2009 and I told him I needed the distraction of planning a wedding while he was gone. I really did, too...it helped a lot =]
Complete and utter shock! I had no idea - Which is veyr unlike me as I am one of those people who always know everything thats going on and hate suprises. No clue, no hints, nothing! He didn't even tell a single soul to make sure that nothing was gestured! sneaky FI!
I knew. Not only because we decided to do it and got the ring together, but also because he told me to stay out of the room for a while as he got prepared.
It was still special because I had no idea what he was going to do or say! Awww, I love thinking back on that moment.
I had no idea and I love that I was so surprised. I loved that he went to the jewelry store and picked the ring out himself. I love that he didn't tell anyone except a week before, he asked my dad for my hand. There are so many things that are just special about our engagement!
Complete shock...as in, almost pass out shock, lol. I had no earthly idea, I remember getting ready to go out to dinner that evening and wondering "why on earth is he sooooooo dressed up". We were going to dinner at a casual seaside place, I was wearing jeans and a cute sweater and he completely outdid me!
We had looked at rings together, so I knew it was coming. The actual where and when was a total surprise.
I totally saw it coming. He chose to do it on our (dating) anniversary. He always does something special for our anniversary, I knew the ring was in his possession before it happened, and he was acting funny the whole week before. So I pretty much had it pegged that he was going to do it then. The only thing that surprised me a little was that he did it after midnight (so technically on our anniversary), instead of waiting for the daytime/that evening (which is more what I was expecting).
He asked me to pick the ring that I liked the most, but he kept it for two months. The week of the proposal he kept making up excuses for me to get mad and to discover my way of avoiding the fire. On Valentines day 2008 he showed at my house at 6:30 in the morning with tons of gifts and inside one of them was my engagement ring. I love him, loved the surprise and now am planning my wedding 10/10/10.
Engagement planning process was all on me...it's the ring I didn't even get to see. Of course he had to give it to me when I was crying about my brother and all that drama...he kept on thinking, Oh Crud, hope she stops crying. come to think of it, I didn't get the ring until the day before our engagement party.
Sounds like we've got some sneaky grooms (but in a good way of course). I love that even though a lot of you knew it was coming they still managed to surprise you with the actual moment!
I knew it was coming - I picked out the ring. However, I thought he was gonna hold onto it for a while to surprise me. I was getting ready to wait it out and at least pretend to be patient, haha. FH ended up giving it to me the day he got it because he was so excited!

I'm curious to what extent our clever grooms are able to suprise their beatiful brides to be with the ring and the big question. Did you know ahead of time or did he take you completely by surprise?
