I really would just like to hear your immediate real reaction to these names - if you love one or more, let me know! If you hate one or more - tell me why.

Keep in mind that these are intended to be unusual, so if you haven't heard the name before - that's kind of the whole point. But I'd still like to hear what you'd think of a child with that name.

I love Liam, but it is climbing in popularity. I've heard Asher around the boards too, but not in real life. I like Lane and Reid probably the best off the list. You have a great list going though!

ETA: I know an Orin and it is always a struggle if it is O-ryan, or Or-in.

I know a lot of kids named Liam. I love Asher [even though it reminds me of Asher Roth]. My FI has brought up Gideon for our future kiddos, I love Orin and Soren but I think I like names that end with 'n' my son's name is Keyan. =]

Asher has been my favorite boy name for years, it's our top name if our baby is a boy :) I was so happy my hubby loved it as much as I do. We also love Liam, partly because my hubby's middle name is William, and while I don't like William, I love Liam :)

Since you asked for opinions ;)

Orin - when I saw it I immediately though "Orion" likes the stars - not sure if that's good or bad lol

Kalan sounds a little too feminine, Avi as well - reminds me of Ava.

not too big of a fan of Ryatt, it looks cute, but when you say it out loud, it's Riot, and I'm not sure how that would be perceived.

Love the rest! I am a HUGE fan for unusual/uncommon names!! Great choices.

@miss-spunkin: I agree about Kalan - it reminds me so much of Cailin.

I like Orin and Reid.  Oren is another good spelling, and helps people steer away from Orion confusion.

I love Reid!!  I know a family with a son named Reid who's adorable.  I also love Asher, and I only know one Asher in real life.  A guy I dated in high school had a brother named Lane, and he seemed like such a rugged, manly guy to me, so I also really like that one.

Reid is a great name. Reminds me of the cute nerd Dr on Criminal Minds. Not a fan of the others.

@Ember78:  Agreed.  Always think of him too when I hear the name Reid.

Love the name Liam - my best friend named her little boy Liam last year and it's adorable.  She's loved that name since we were in high school though.

As for the others, none of them are jumping out at me; although I must say, as a teacher, if I saw a child with the name Ryatt on my class list, I would instantly cringe.  I think there is an element of truth about kids living up to their names, in loose terms, and naming a child Ryatt (pronounced 'riot') is just not indicative of good things to come.  Just my opinion though!

I like Reid best, I also like Avi (probably because I had a friend in HS named Avi) and Gideon (probably because of Gideon Yago - who used to be on MTV News like forever ago - anyone with me?)

First thought with Lane is that it sounds like a girl's name. I think this is due to Lane from Gilmore Girls. First thought with Ryatt was that it sounds like Riot, or like Wyatt pronounced wrong.

I named my son Sterling... absolutely love unique names.  Ryder is also very cute, but so very texan lol good luck, and i think it's great that you want something unique.

Oh & Reid is my FAV.  Although Asher is very cute, I know several people I went to High School w/ that named their son that, so it's not as "unique"

Alot of these arent unusual to me either... However I dont mean to sound rude but there is something  I HATE about the name Liam... it makes me cringe for some reason! LoL   I did work with a little 3yr old named Gideon who is probably one of my favorite memories of working in TN.... He was THE SMARTEST kid ever and just a DOLL!!! Little round face and always told me ... Miss Kai I LOVE YOU!

Love Knox and Asher...  had a friend name her son Cohen which is cute! : )

I know a little girl named Avi.  I always thought that was a girls name.

And I also equate Brennan to a girls name because of Bones :)

    I like Lane and Asher.

I love Reid! But that is it from the list. I know a lot of Liam's so I like the name but wouldn't name my son that. I also love Wyatt, I know you listed Ryatt. But we had a dog in doggy school named wyatt so that's what I think of.

I personally think several of these names are mainstream, but with that being said I picked Soren and Reid. Our son will be Westley Reed (Reed is a family name). My oldest child is named Darian. I am definitely a fan of unusual names. WHich is why one of my favorite names, Colin is completely off limits now since it is so darn popular.

This is the best way to pick a name from a long list. Try to come up with as many ways to make fun of/distort the name as you can. Your child will have to live with it at school. Remember kids are creative and can come up with lots of things. But usually it isn't something you couldn't have thought of. Once you have your list I would choose the one that if it were my name I could live with being called, regular name or name calling. I personally like Reid. :)

My last name is actually one of the names on your list! And I HATE it for a first name! I'm not sure if it is because it is my married name, if I can't get the focus group's comment about it "meaning nothing to them" from the show Pregnant in Heels out of my head, or because DH's cousin (it was her maiden) used it for her son's first name and I found it 'odd'.

Of the names you have listed, I like Kade the best. I think it is unique but not so far out there, it falls somewhere in the middle. Reid is a rather common name, IMO. It's actually my nephews middle name and I went to grade school with a Reid.

My #1 favorite on that list is Knox. It is so different and strong sounding. I feel like your son would have a warrior's heart, stand by his convictions. My next favorite is Soren. Again this is a strong sounding name but I feel like this boy would be a deep thinker. I don't like Avi because people would think it was a girl, like Ava. Dumb but I can see it happening. The same thing with Lane though I love that name. Bowen is very different but just not my taste. I love Ryatt, maybe he would be a riot (very fun). This is just my opinion and I am sure whatever you choose will be perfect!

The only ones I like are Brennan, Reid, and Liam, because they are the most "normal" names.  I like unusual names, as long as they don't sound like a made-up bunch of scrambled letters with nouns stuck in at odd places.  I like names that actually are names.  I actually really love Liam, the other two are ok/acceptable.

Orin, Kalan, Rohan, Soren, and Gideon sound like they came out of Lord of the Rings and I absolutely hate them.  I feel like your kid would be made fun of because their name sounds like the name of an elf or an ork or some other made-up fantasy creature.  A bunch of them also sound girly.

Knox is the city where I live, so that's out.

Kade, Avi, and Lane are all very girly.  Again, your kid would probably be made fun of.

Ryatt and Bowen just sound made-up and I really don't like them.

So, Liam it is, with Brennan in second if I had to choose again!

    I agree entirely with Oribel013690

I like Reid and Liam, probably because they're the most "normal" sounding. But I personally would not use Liam because it's too popular.

I don't like any of the others very much; most of them sound like the parent is trying too hard to be different, and I am just not a fan of that sort of names (but I know that's what you're going for).

Ryatt is probably the one I dislike most -- it both looks and sounds like someone just made it up. It also sounds too much like "riot."

Kade and Kalan also sound made up, Lane sounds like a female name, and Asher sounds (for lack of a better word) snobby. Gideon is an automatic "no" for me because it's a biblical name.

A singer I like just named his son Bowen... not a huge fan. I like Liam, but it's pretty popular if you're going for uniqueness. I like Rohan, reminds me of LOTR :)

Soren sounds girly to me... I read a book where a female character was named Soren. Brennan too, because of Bones (TV show).

I'm not too big on most of them. I used to love Liam, but as previous posters said, it's way too popular nowadays and I definitely wouldn't label it "unusual."

I voted for Gideon, I think that's a pretty cool name. Though, that might be because of the old MTV correspondent Gideon Yago - I kind of had the hots for him.

lol I maybe be weird, but I feel like many of these are not that unusual!!  Perhaps because some are biblical?  I know you said Rohan would be pronounced like "Rowan" but it still seems common to me because it's a common Indian name (with the other pronunciation), and I know a TON of guys named Avi because it is an extremely common Jewish name for a boy.  Personally, my favorite of the choices is still Asher.

I like Knox.  Our first choice baby boy name is Nash Michael, but if had twins (DH is an identical twin so we think about that), they would be Nash and Knox.  Or that would be our second boy name.  I like Bowen too. I think I saw that name on an episode of "Pregnant in Heels."

ETA:  I like the name Rowan, but I am just not liking the spelling "Rohan."  The reason I can't compute it, I read it as ROW Haan..I'm an LSU alum and we had a pretty famous college bball player name Rohan, and it was pronounced Row Haahn (like cole haan)
