We didn't choreograph, but we did practice a little. We didn't want to just sway, but we didn't want to look totally awkward and mess up!
Well, we're going to do the standard slow dance to "The Luckiest" by Ben Folds,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cwlL9tZo30
and then we want the end of the song to blend into "Jump On It" by Sugar Hill Gang, ala Fresh Prince dance:
We still haven't decided on the song, but both my FI and I love to shag so I think we'll go that route with a faster song. Maybe like "Sugar Pie Honey Bunch" or "My Lady Soul" and I love the song by Taj Mahal "Lovin' in my Babies Eyes" but he's not so sure on dancing to that.
We swayed- it was very nice. But people are right when they say it seems sooo much longer when you're up there. So do yourselves a favor and have your DJ fad it out instead of doing the whole dance!
We are dancers so we danced the whole song...all 8 minutes of it! (It was supposed to be shorter but at the last moment all the plans fell through, so 8 minutes it became.) It was one of my favorite parts of the wedding.
For anyone thinking of taking dance lessons, go for it! Dancing is wonderful exercise and a wonderful activity to do with your husband/fiance. It is also a great way to make friends. I met my husband while dancing and we have also made a lot of great friends through it as well. If you take lessons, the ballroom crowd (waltz, foxtrot, etc., what you see on dancing with the stars) tends to be a little older and more buttoned up (although if you are near any universities there is usually a decent sized college-age crowd). The swing dance crowd is usually a little younger and more casual and friendly. I have learned all different types of dance and swing is my favorite. Charmedbride, I hope your dance lessons go well!
I Love our song. It was perfect for us and it was pretty short! We danced to "the Way I am" by Ingrid Michelson. A lot of people had never heard it before and commented on how much they loved it. Everytime either of us hears it we dance with each other or call the other to tell them we are thinking of them. Pick something you love. Don't worry about length, you can always cut it down.
@MrsK2be: That's the song we're having one of my bridesmaids sing during our ceremony! :)
Am I the only one who's skipping it? My fiance's a TERRIBLE dancer! Every time we've danced a slow dance together he insists on spinning in a slow circle the whole time... For faster dances, I've had to run off the floor with a bloody toe, he's gotten stepped on with a high heel. It's really not pretty. If he dances at all I'll know he's had a bit to drink.
So, we're skipping it. We'll dance together at some point when we won't have everyone staring at our spinning circle......
We're doing it junior high style, with some good ol' swaying. =) I'm looking forward to our sweet little moment of peace, before it gets craaazy at the reception!
My FI and I are currently taking dance lessons. Our wedding is in August and I wish we had decided to do it closer to the wedding but summers are always much busier so it made sense to do it now. We are learning the Rumba now and have already done the Waltz.
We picked "At Last" for our 1st dance song but I would like it to end and then go into a choreographed number so we can have the best of both worlds. What I really want is to have my bridal party learn the Thriller or a different choreographed dance and do it with us but I think the committment to get 12 of us together (when 3 are currently in different states) will be a little tough :)
At first, I was fine with just slow dancing/swaying but my MOH sent me links of surprise first dances and they just look like so much fun! It would definitely set the fun vibe I'm hoping for in our wedding. So now we're doing a surprise first dance. I'm even doing the mix tape of songs, and I'm so excited to see our guests' reactions! :)
I like to say our first dance was high school style - left right left right. :) We kept it simple but it was a very sweet moment regardless :)
I like to dance but my husband is kind of shy. I would have love to break out a fast dance in the middle of the slow first dance like that video clip on youtube. HAHA.

Just curious what the other bees have planned for their first dance/did for their first dance! We're starting to look into dance lessons since FI can't really dance and wants to feel comfortable on our wedding day, but we haven't quite decided what we'll actually do on the dance floor. I think I'd like to have something classic but kind of chereographed (which surprisingly he's up for!)...it would be a lot of fun for our guests I think since they all know he hates dancing!
What about you?
