Umm...toothpaste has an expiration date...? Good to know! I thought this thread was going to be about squeezing the living daylights out of the tube to get the last little bits because you forgot to pick up more on your way home again. That's me. :)

I'd toss it. I have a huge issue with expiration dates and am always checking them.

Toss it...medicine and toothpaste have LONG experation dates, so if it is expired it must be old (that's my rational, anyways! hehe)

I don't think I would even notice that it would be expired, so I would keep on ignorantly using it.

I seriously got up and checked my tube!  LOL!  But it doesn't expire until 2012, so I think I'm okay since it's almost empty now.

Ha ha!  Yeah, I had no idea they had expiration dates.  I voted keep using since I never would have thought to look for one.  Now that I know that they do...who knows.  It depends on how badly I need some I guess!  :-)

I'm wondering how my toothpaste expired. They have really long shelf lives so hopefully I would have used it before it even came close to expiring.

I'd probably toss it though if it were a travel sized tube that didn't get much use. Weird stuff happens when things expire - like the ingredients separate...ick!

My question would be... how often do you brush your teeth if your toothpaste expires?

cyneswith, just about once a week.

No, we ended up being able to stock up on it last year or the year before really cheaply and while packing I saw some that have already expired.  We have not had to buy toothpaste for months if not a year.  Most are not expired until 2011.2012 but there's a handful that is expired.  I've never paid much attention to the date but then it got me wondering if it's safe.

A lot of expiration dates on products like that only have to do with taste or "effectiveness" of ingredients like whiteners. It's not a safety thing, like when meat expires. I wouldn't waste too much energy (or money) being paranoid about it!

I didn't even know toothpaste HAD expiration dates. I go through toothpaste pretty fast though so I doubt a tube would ever make it to the point of expiration.

*cough* Most of the toothpaste I get is expired, since FFIL owns a grocery store chain and almost everything he brings home is expired anyway. In fact, there's a box of salsa mix sitting on the kitchen counter right now that "went out" in Dec '09.

What, toothpaste expires!? I've never noticed! I'm militant about tossing old medicine that's past expiry, but I didn't realize toothpaste could expire. Good to know!

@Toffee: Um, well, maybe Dec 09 is stretching it but I use 'expiration dates' as guidelines. I eat expired eggs and breads and nothing ever happened to me. I've taken expired tylenol. I have doctor friends. They said the medicine doesn't kill you especially if it's headache medicine and recently expired, it's effectiveness is just reduced. Where I grew up in Africa, we never put eggs in the fridge and they didn't go bad. Never saw an expiration date on any eggs either.

Unless it's like years old, I'd still use it!  No joke, last week I saw two comtainers of toothpaste at GoodWil that had an expiration of 2007. haha I smelled it and it was still minty fresh (don't know why I was compelled to smell it), but there's no way I'd use it.

@bRooklynRocks: Yeah, I don't bother with expiration dates either. Most products that have them are so processed anyway, they're still fine! Our eggs and milk come from a local farmer and we can have them for weeks before the eggs go bad. As for toothpaste....we got a case of Colgate a few years ago from a friend (probably 2007) and we're still working through it. I have no idea if it's expired but I don't have any cavities so I'm probably not going to check!

I didn't know it expired! I'd probably check it first to see if it still look/smelled/had the right texture like toothpaste. If it seemed fine, i'd still use it.

One example of how it can expire - my mom and stepdad keep toothpaste in the guest bathroom. If they only have guests a couple times a year, welll...yeah. That toothpaste definitely expires. I've noticed, and I've used it anyway. :P

Can't say that I've noticed an expiration date on toothpaste. However if you are brushing your teeth regularly, it shouldn't be an issue. I have a handful of relatives who work in the medical field and all agree that expiration dates are the equivalent of "sell by" dates so that a store's merchandise is regularly rotated, but obviously you wouldn;t use medicine that is years old since it has lost its effectiveness. A few months or a year though won't make that much difference. The expiration dates pretty much only apply to fresh foods, due to everything being so processed with preservatives and whatnot.

I have rarely paid attention to expiration dates for that reason and have yet to have anything bad happen.

I'm with @bRooklynRocks:. I think of exp dates more as guidelines. We also eat farm fresh eggs and milk that has not been pasteurized, and I figure if they can last as long as they do without going bad, I'm sure the preservatives jacked stuff from the store can also make it. Although that Bar-B-Q sauce from 1995 that I found in the back of the bottom shelf of my mom's fridge when she moved in 2003... that one got thrown away! (And yes, the fridge had been cleaned out before then; she just kept putting it back and didn't think anything of it. Ick.)

I also did not realized that toothpaste expires anyway.

Hmmm. . .I'd still use it if it wasn't too expired (within the last year).  I volunteered at a health clinic that gave out certain pills that expired within the last year. . .they said it's legal.  Some things are not good past their date, I agree, but I also remember a time when soda cans didn't have an expiration date, and we all drank it just the same.

I don't think I'd mind used slightly expired toothpaste, especially since we don't swallow it. . .I know my SO would disagree.  He'd probably toss it if it were one day past the expiration date!!!  Lol.

@Toffee:  Ick, I wouldn't be able to do it.

I'm with everyone else on the fact that I didn't know toothpaste had expiration date.  I wouldn't use it if I saw it was past date, but most likely I wouldn't know.  Where do you find the expiration date for toothpaste anyway?
